OAK BLUFFS - There have been no sightings of suited agents in sunglasses talking into their wrists, but residents say the Secret Service has reserved rooms at several hotels, and certain high-placed emissaries have contacted local caterers and asked to review restaurant menus. And there are reports of a housing search in a secure location that would be comfortable for a family of four and their sizable retinue.

This is a good example of how things work when the first family goes on vacation. Hundreds of people are in on the planning. The Obamas may have to pay for a rental and food but that is minor compared to the operational cost. imo

OR they could come and stay in my Star Island home where so many stars live - security is excellent, and you can see South Beach from the front porch - ......but oops.......I'm renting it out to Gloria Estefan right now. Rain check?

:laugh:Do you allow dogs? :hat:

It is costly for the first family to go on vacation.

On a side note: It really irks me that GWB spent like 900 and something days on vacation. He thought nothing of spending mass amounts on his vacations. Seems that trend is over as Obama spends most of his time working.

Only well-behaved, tiny, "designer" dogs allowed!

Most people, when they begin a new job, can only take their first vacation one year later. I think this should apply to the presidents.

ROTFLMBO... tiny well behaved "designer" dogs.. are those the kind that fit in a purse...

Say you wouldn't happen to have a third home near Windmere... wouldn't mind hanging out there for a few weeks this summer... you know who is there...:tonguewag: We could play a few rounds..

You can pick them up at the security guard booth! Say "Hello" to Cher for me and tell her she doesn't have to return the Bob Mackie dresses I loaned her!

There are several reasons I find the Obamas "taking a vacation" at this time, absurd. He's been in Office only 7 months. He went to Hawaii in December, Weekend Valentine Retreat to Chicago home in February, Globe trotting with family this month - and then he needs a vacation in August.

I thought they were in Maryland for Malia's birthday.

Do these people ever stay home?

It must be such a downer staying at the White House and having to face all those annoying economic downturn problems - you know - a country in crisis.

ok

Bush spent 62.4 days on vacation in his 1st year of office. 12 weeks. Very costly but hey I agree with the guy who wrote the article- what more damage could he have done if he had actually been there working. LOL

Kind of like Bush staying on vacation after Katrina hit. imo You know- a country in crisis. great job Brownie...... Nothing Obama has done can even compare with that. Obama is entitled to downtime just as much as the previous guy.

The thread isn't about Bush but I will indulge you. Never has our country been in such desperate straits. Obama should be leading by example and he fails. It's only been 7 months - the Obamas wiill catch up to Bush soon.

Obama has yet to visit any State here that has been hit by a weather crisis yet no one complains. Devastating ice storms and twisters, people suffering - yet Obama is a no show.

It's amazing what people think they know about people they don't even know. There is no way to know if he was working or not.

Notice, though, that Bush's "vacations" were done quietly - with class: No exploitation of his daughters by clothing companies, no "fashion plate" pictures and adulation.....etc.

No comparison is right! But having to bring up Bush on this thread is more deflection, smoke and mirrors to hide how bad these many getaways are looking for the Obamas.

Presidents do things for a reason. President Carter wore a sweater, to encourage others to save energy. President Reagan went to his ranch and did activities to show he was young and vital. President Clinton was often seen leaving a church with his family to convey a wholesome image.

President Bush I think wanted to show that while we were at war, things could still be normal with vacations as usual.

What we need now is a healthy economy. Date nights, travel, new clothes, gardening supplies, health care, get out and spend like the President does. There's a message there. imo

While Mrs. Obama and the couple’s two daughters, Malia and Sasha, are planning to stay longer, aides said Mr. Obama was likely to take only a week of vacation. The Obama administration is intent on avoiding any parallels to Mr. Bush, who spent 27 days at his Texas ranch during the first August vacation of his presidency, which came only days before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
