Is this young man exceptionally intelligent for his age?
I am a little confused as to why a child this young would be offered a full scholarship, at such a young age without some kind of academic record to support it.

Probably. I wouldn't doubt it.
I think there is more to the story. imo

I guess you missed the story at the time. Damon had decided to interview Joe Biden during the campaign, as part of his duties for school news channel KEC TV News. It was a great interview, and he was as tenacious as any good reporter should be. He also has a strong arm lol. He asked Biden what a vice president does, and Biden answered...and answered...actually gave a great explanation but the 10 year old was way shorter than him and had to hold the microphone up for a long time lol
In fact he was so tenacious at getting to the inauguration as a "reporter" he even was finally given press credentials.
He is a great kid who knows what he wants to do as an adult and has the determination and guts to go for it.
i didn't post the back story because i thought everyone who follwed the campaigns knew who Damon Weaver was and certainly never thought people would be anything but thrilled for this child who comes from a poor family but is working hard for his future. Sorry.
Here is the video of him interviewing Senator Biden:
When Joe Biden campaigned in Palm Beach County, Florida in September he was interviewed by one Damon Weaver, a remarkably poised and charming 5th grader. Weaver's news segment on Biden's visit is highly entertaining and worth checking out. Make sure to watch to the end, when Weaver pronounces Biden his "homeboy."

Umm he INTERVIEWED biden. Then if you had seen how hard he worked to get try and get an interview with President obama and even just get credentialed at the inauguration you wouldn't be rolling your eyes. He didn't just write a letter lol, he did a video telling President-elect Obama why he wanted to be granted an interview and send it to the media and the campaign lol. I don't think he got the interview (understandable given all the duties on the day of the inauguration) but he did get to go and have press credentials to get into areas that only journalists could and report on the whole thing for his school tv channel.

I was thinking the same thing, Shiloh. My husband and I are working like heck to save to pay our son's first tuition payment due in August, why didn't someone tell me that all he had to do was say something nice about Joe Biden?
Maybe a degree from that University isn't worth much, since they give them away so easily for silly reasons?

Albany State is a great school....Do some research! Bitterness at someone else's hard work and subsequent good fortune is really unbecoming.....
The kid is 10! What hard work are you refering to?

I am going to assume that this young man is going to have to keep up his grades through High School in order to take advantage of this opportunity.

i sure don't understand it sally. Damon worked hard to get this honor and opportunity. The "homeboy" comment was at the very end of his interview, and cute but that had nothing to do with the work he did and his professionalism in working to be able to do his reporting. I am still a little stunned lol i thought everyone knew who he was after the campaign and inauguration

Apparently you are disregarding everything linked in the thread? Yeesh, hatin' on a ten y/o......Folks should really check themselves, imo:sad:
Who is hatin'? I simply think that at 10 years old, he hasn't even scratched the surface of "HARD WORK" that you claim got him a free ride to college.
He is a CHILD!
Now, if he were 10 years old and a senior in high school, or a musical prodigy, I could see it, but just because he was granted an interview with Joe Biden?
PoppySeeds
06-28-2009, 07:43 PM
LOL , gotta be a 'musical prodigy'??? Can't be a journalism prodigy? Plenty of children work hard, which is relative to their age. Yep, I see hatin'. I see absolutely NO reason to be sniping at this, and not happy for the opportunity he has, for the effort he put in.
What an illogical thought process. He was lucky enough to be granted an interview, which, was a pretty good interview for a 10 year old, and now he deserves a free ride to college.
I wish I could see the world, just once, from the far left liberal view. I wonder daily what color the sky is in that world.
Enjoy your time on my ignore list. You are too illogical for me to continue to read what you inflict here.

Couldn't tell you what color the sky is on the far left and I'm sure the Liberals on this board couldn't either since none of us far left loons.
But on the left I can tell you that you wouldn't like it over on this side at all. Why? Because your system would be shocked to see how we're open to all people, not just the rich.
We care about children so we opened SCHIP up for more to grow up healthy.
We care about women so we made it so that women can be paid the same as a man for doing the same job.
We care about those with illnesses so we made it possible to find a cure by allowing federal money to be used for stem cell research.
We don't turn our noses up to the poor of the country. We don't complain if we have a to pay a few more dollars in taxes in order to help a family that isn't as well off as us. We are the people party, not the rich people only part.
Have fun on the right side of the aisle. I don't have to ask what color the clouds are over on that side.
OK, let's disect this ok?
In my state there are insurance programs for children (all children) that my tax go to fund, that I am THRILLED is avaliable, since my grandchild did not qualify under the plan through my employer.
I have never in all my years of employment (since I got my first job a 15) been paid less than the males I work with. Do I owe you a thanks for that?
I donated my youngest child's cord blood for stem cell research, since researchers are finding it as a viable source that isn't as ethically distasteful as fetal stem cells.

It is a very interesting that something that has been viewed as medical waste for years can save lives.
I am far from rich, and have in fact lived in abject poverty, until I was an adult and was able to, through hard work, make my family comfortable enough that they might not have every thing they WANT but the have everything the need.
I am for small government that doesn't inflict itself unjustly on the populus. And by that same token, I don't think that the government owes me or mine anything that hasn't been earned through hard work.
Oh, and the color of the sky in my world is a very lovely shade of blue, almost the same as an old faded comfortable pair of jeans.

Your post here has to be the oddest post of the day. Her intent was to put people down? Really?
I'll bet it never even dawned on her there would be people posting on this thread that wouldn't be happy that a young man, boy really, received such a fine gift because of his obvious talents. I gotta tell you I was stunned. She probably fell off her chair at some of the posts here today. It's beyond my wildest immagination why everyone isn't tickled pink that his young man has such a good chance to make something of his life. Maybe you'd like to explain that one to me, because it really is beyond me.
And if you consider the title inflammatory....

Maybe you should write FNC since it came from the article. But why would you consider it inflammatory? It is simply discriptive.
I am truely stunned.

In a letter to Damon offering a full, four-year scholarship, Albany State University President Everett Freeman wrote: "In life we do many things, but to realize a life goal at such a young age is truly a wonderful accomplishment. I am sure your family, friends and your school are very proud of you. We, too, at Albany State University have followed your young career and share the pride with citizens of South Florida."

I cannot believe all the hating going on. This young man has figured out at an early age that he wants to go to college to be a journalist and has already set things in motion to meet that goal. He has done that at an age where most kids have not even begun to think beyond next week. And a college has decided to reward that. From reading the article, the scholarship he has been given is for summer sessions while he is still in middle and high school. So he will graduate high school with some college credits already under his belt.
I did something similar. I knew I wanted to go to college and my parents were honest and told me that there would not be money from them for that purpose. They wanted to but there were too many children and not enough salary. I asked my guidance counselor when I was 12 (I was a little behind Damon) what she would recommend I do to increase my chances of scholarships. I applied for and received grants and scholarships for college classes while I was still in high school. And having done well in college courses prior to graduating high school helped me get scholarship $ later. So if you have a child in your life who is going to need help, don't throw rotten apples at others who have figured out a way to make their dreams come true....figure out what you can learn from them and make your own dreams come true.

Politics aside, an education, free, to any child is a good thing. Albany State University is a little hard to find but appears to be a private school founded for African American students but is now integrated. Nothing is coming from the taxpaper pocket so I can't see anyone's objection, whether they think he earned it or not. Publicity is a wonderful thing, via the internet, in this case.
Giving him a spot does not take one from someone more deserving.
It's a good thing, nothing to argue about here, politically or otherwise.

I know. Some of these people are a hoot.
I guess hard work and the ability to provide for yourself and your family is only an attribute if the person has the same political beliefs.

Just curious, how is it 'a little hard to find'???
This school, like any university, is making a PR gesture, trying to capitalize on this little guy's 15 minutes of viral internet fame. It gets a little defused by the fact that the Fox article fails to mention their name and most people reading casually will assume Albany University (the big one in New York). The one in Georgia is Albany State University, it just gets drowned out in the search engines by other, bigger, better known schools. No biggie.

My bad, I missed it. Profound apologies.
I never "get" the mean attitude on these threads. It goes against the Southern values with which I was raised. It was called "Yankee manners" back then. Of course, I fully realize now that that was unjust.

You say all this - and then begrudge a young lad, who works very hard at what he wants to do, a little good fortune in his life - sad.
And while you are discussing small government - don't forget all the things that government does provide that you use
like the roads and bridges
the national parks and recreation areas
law enforcement
fire department
etc etc

Number 2 in the dictionary's definition is what I know of the phrase previous. It's what gang members in Los Angeles reference one another. It's street slang. Having grown up in East L.A. I personally wouldn't want to have that designation being as they murder people regularly and commit other crimes that plague our nation. I think it's tragic anyone would think it funny, cute or anything considered good in any way, shape or form. They're criminals whom many spend their lives in prisons. I hope this is not what our nation's leaders strive for. :crying:

What a great story and a terrific opportunity for this young man. We should all be happy for him and wish him well.
I do and for all our nations other young people also. To willfully go away from the gang mentality.
