My beagle has gotten a little chubby, to put it nicely. We (the vet and I) decided to put him on a high fiber, low calorie food. The only problem was that he expects a dog cookie/treat when he comes in the door. Which is probably how he got so chubby! And since he is a beagle/hound mix, he can be very loud and vocal when he thinks you are not giving him what he wants because you do not understand. So the vet suggested that I get a can of low salt green beans and give him one or two. She assured me he would like them but I really did not believe her.
HE LOVES THEM!!!!!!! I have to be careful because the other dogs also want them and will snatch them away from each other. The vet said they have almost no calories and they cannot get too many of them. Never in a million years would I have thought of this! So I thought I would pass it on for anyone else with a chubby dog who likes treats. I am even going to mix some in with his dry food to help fill him up.

My dogs love green beans and carrots! I buy carrots in those big 5-lb bags.

Air-popped popcorn is ok, too.

Thanks for the additional tips. I knew that my Lucy who died in April liked fruit and carrots but green beans never occurred to me. And it just blows me away how much he seems to love them! Far more than he ever seemed to like the cookies. I'm going to try carrots because the tartar control is one reason we started on the dog treats..then it just got out of control!

I tried the carrots and the two little ones (chihuahua and mini doxie) chewed them up and looked for more. Luckie (beagle) licked it and (I guess) because it had no obvious taste, spit it out and one of the little ones snatched it and ran! Oh well, I guess Lucky is a bean lover only!

Try her on peeled apples. I had a dog that would start salavating anytime he saw apples, he loved them so much.

Thanks so much for this tip. My mini dachshund is also chubby and I've been advised she must lose weight. She also cries for food, so the in-between green bean snack sounds perfect! I will try that tonight. Thanks again.

Hope it works for you. My Tweeny Dachshund tends to gain too much weight & that is so bad for their backs. I use the veggie treats as a way to keep her weight under control. She loves them all but green beans are her favorite.

Thank you too! Now I can't wait to try them with my doxie. Can you buy the veggie treats in the market? I don't think I've seen them anywhere. Has anyone tried canned pumpkin to help with weight control. Mine won't eat it, but I know of many dogs, especially Golden Retrievers who love it and have lost weight once introduced into their diets.

I just buy cans of low or no salt green beans & feed them right out of the can (do the same with carrots, peas & corn too). I find mine like the low salt better than the no salt. The only way mine like canned pumpkin is in a pumpking pie & I don't think that is conducive to weight loss, lol.

She told me to use just regular low/no salt green beans in a can. Just like you would buy for the two legged members of the family.
Warhorse, Mine are already eating apples and other types of fruit. I was just amazed that they would eat green beans! I know that doxies have to be careful with their weight because of their long backs. Luckily, my doxie does not overeat and is "just right" according to my vet. It's my beagle who has a weight issue....Poor thing, I hate diets too!

Always gotta be one in the crowd that has a weight issue, poor thing. According to my vet, my doxie is within normal weight range now too but @ one time her weight crept up 2 lbs too much. That is when I started the veggies as treats thing & she dropped the extra weight. She loves to eat.

My DS has a dog that loves sweet potatoes--raw, cooked or anywhere in between, he will gobble them down. Even likes the skins if you are peeling them.

I'm too lazy to cut up carrots :), but I just pick up the bags of mini carrots. They're about the right size for my beagle and don't cost that much. He loves his treats and it's an easy way to give them to him.

It is amazing! Our vet recommended green beans for our lab mix. The chihuahua and boxer HAVE to have some too! It's the highlight of their day! We buy the BIG cans since we have 3 to treat!

I had to come back and post after I tried this with our dog. (She's a pomeranian.) She has always eaten carrots. I buy the baby carrots and she loves them.

I found a can of "no salt added" green beans at Wegman's and just gave her the first of them today. She went crazy over them !! Asked for more, of course.

I would have never thought of canned green beans as an alternate treat, so thank you for posting this !

thanks, withay, for the tip.

i have 2 labs who are a bit "fluffy"

in the summer, they love to crunch on ice cubes, so at least that's a no-fat, no calorie treat!

My Mother has 5 dogs, a few of which are a bit "fluffy" also, so I told her about it also. She thought I was crazy but four of five of hers loved them also! I guess there is one in every crowd who has to be difficult! Mine are still happily chomping on the green beans!

Our neighbors brought their Yorkie over last night and we tried it with her but she wasn't interested. BUT she was distracted by our cat, who isn't afraid of dogs and the Yorkie just couldn't get over that.

I'l try again next time she stops by.

Lucky now turns his nose up if his kibble does not have some green beans mixed in!!! He's apparently turning into a dogfood gourmet. It has been 20 days and he seems to be starting to have a bit of a waist! He has not had a cookie in 20 days.
I wish I could lose weight this easily.

LOL - I thought about you earlier. My dogs got green beans mixed in with their dinner - they were so happy! :tonguewag:
