I saw Annabel, my Brittany, leap off her chair and run after something. She cased it around the kitchen and dining room. Not a mouse, too big. It was a chipmunk who had come in while I left the door open as I was loading some things in the car. Annabel caught it, and although she has a soft mouth (for catching birds), I don't think it survived. Poor chip. But Annabel protected me.
We tried to get the chipmunk outside but he kept hiding under the furniture.

Yeah for Annabel...she is just following her instincts..and she did it well!! Poor Chippy tho..But dont feel too bad...It's nice to know she has her "Instincts" inplace...guess you dont have to worry about critters loose in your house from now on...
A Big Hi from myself and Griffey ( Ailing Jack Russel)..who has lost some of his speed in catching things..but certainly not the instincts..;-)

Thanks Lynda, I put the chipmunk outside by the deck (kept Annabel in the house) and when I went out a little later, it was gone. I guess it survived. It was moving a little after she dropped it.

lol, mine is the house all the children bring the injured birds. They know I'll make them all better if it's possible.
One of the little neighbor boys brought me a black capped chickadee last summer, poor little thing appeared to be a goner, he had crashed into a picture window. But, we packed him into a shoe box with nesting material and a bit of soaked millet & put the box in a warm quiet spot for the night hoping for the best.
When we opened the box the next morning I was very glad we decided to do so on the back porch because as soon as we cracked that lid that guy was waiting and outta there as fast as he could flap those little wings.
For the little critters sometimes they just need a chance to get their wits back about them. They're a lot hardier than we imagine.

A couple of months ago, my mini doxie caught a squirrel in the back yard. It was funny because it looked like something from a cartoon. Oscar held the squirrel at paws length away from his face (they were close to the same size) and it also held him at paws length while they just looked at each other. Then they both let go and ran in opposite directions! I guess Oscar had not thought through what he would do if he ever caught one. He still chases them though.

Ha, my mini-weiner dog has caught a squirrel once, the panicking thing scared the dog half to death and she let go. Now she seems to stay just behing them, not really wanting to catch them  .

LOL.
I think it is Annabel's dream to catch the squirrel that taunts her. She is a very fast runner but that pesky squirrel just goes up a tree. She has caught a bird in the yard, but after all she is a bird dog. We don't know what her background was before American Brittany Rescue picked her up from a kill shelter in Jan, but she could have been trained as a hunter/gun dog. She constantly points at birds.
This breed has very long legs in relation to their body size so can run fast.

My dog Holly has caught squirrels and she kills and eats them...tail and all. :scared: She's very patient and will lie in wait under a bush or something for a very long time, just waiting for her chance. I always ruin her "hunt" when I see her in the mode. Still, I'm really glad there aren't many squirrels in this new neighborhood or I'd have to worry and fuss about them. I can't be watching all the time, sadly.
I've seen many wild animals appear to be dead once they're caught, but revive almost immediately once they're let loose. I'm sure that lil' chipmunk is doing just fine.
My cat had a baby bunny once that I was sure was dead, but once I got it out of Harley's mouth and made sure there were no bite marks or blood, that bunny ran like the wind.
Harley was NOT happy with me. I told him to pretend I was a hyena and we were out on the Serengeti (sp) so that's why I had to steal his "kill".

Oh I am so sorry for the chipmunk! Beta got a little bird one time and pounced the poor thing to death. He didn't mean to, you could tell by the look on his face, but just the same its hard when the critter they get ahold of is not one you really want them to get ahold of.

Oh I thought that I sent an update on the chipmunk. Annabel dropped him when I told her. He was moving a little. I gently placed him on a dustpan and took him outside and put him on the ground by my deck. I kept Annabel inside and about 30 min. later Chippy was gone, so I think her survived.

Great news for the chipmunk. And Anabell gets the satisfaction of knowing she finally caught one of those tauning buggers! Lucky our kitten (he is just over a year old now) tried to catch a bird one day and got dive bombed by other birds. Needless to say he had to drop his "prize" and spent the afternoon trying to find where it had escaped too.
