Interesting read.. sure there will be more in the next few days.. read a good one about Lefty too.. how he is adored by the New York golf fans.. will post that one too soon as I find it again...

Thought this part of the article was poignant... Earl left his son with so much.. I think more than he even knew himself. What a wonderful father/son relationship.

Woods' place in golf lore is already secure, but it hasn't dulled his competitive edge. Like nearly all the other parts of his foundation, Woods' desire was unveiled as a kid and carefully nurtured by his father, Earl, a former Green Beret who died in 2006.

Earl was never one to waste a teaching moment, and during a phone conversation almost a decade ago, he recalled watching a Los Angeles Lakers game with his son:

``I used to tell Tiger, 'You watch Magic next year and he'll have at least one new shot.' We would watch them next year, and Tiger would look for the shot Magic had been working on all summer. And he's never forgotten that.''

Woods continues to experiment with shots nobody else on tour would touch. He's taken the ``knockdown'' - typically a mid- to short-iron shot that bores through the wind - and adapted it for use with his 3-wood. He's got one wedge shot with a stiff-armed swing that turns left upon landing, another where he cuts sharply across the ball to make it go right. All that's missing are turn signals on his golf bag.

10 a.m. ET: Good morning from Bethpage, where we're still two days away from the opening round of the U.S. Open, but it's never too early to live blog the proceedings.

Today is interview day at the course, as Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey have already hit the interview room, with Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy, Henrik Stenson, Angel Cabrera and Anthony Kim coming up throughout the remainder of the morning and afternoon.

Nice weather so far, as it's currently about 61 degrees and "variably cloudy," according to the sheet passed out in the media center. Should reach a high of 67 with a "slight chance of a shower/sprinkle" during mid-afternoon. (Insert your own shower/sprinkle joke here.)

I'll be providing updates from both the course and the interview room throughout the day. Now that most players have at least one or two practice rounds under their belts, we'll be able to get a better sense of how the Black is really playing so far.

New York might consider itself the capital of the world, but its people are suckers for an underdog.

How about an underdog whose first priority is caring for his sick wife? Suffice it to say, the ground might shake when Mickelson is introduced at 10:36 a.m. (PDT) Thursday on the 10th tee at Bethpage for the U.S. Open.

Pelz got a preview during Mickelson’s practice round.

“The course was closed, but people were watching, yelling and cheering for him,” he said. “In New York, they’re ‘people’ people. They care about Phil.”

It’s a two-way street.

After Woods completed a practice round last week, the New York Daily News reported he “went out of his way” to avoid making contact with the 100 or so people hoping to greet him. Mickelson, meanwhile, signed autographs and answered questions from about three dozen fans after his lengthy practice session.

He told fans inquiring about Amy that “she’s hanging in there.”

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.(AP) — Phil Mickelson has arrived at the U.S. Open with a series of text messages and notes from wife Amy, who is home preparing to fight breast cancer.

She wants him to return with the U.S. Open trophy.

Mickelson only decided to return to Bethpage Black two weeks ago after disclosing that his wife has been diagnosed with cancer. He was runner-up to Tiger Woods in 2002, and already has tied the U.S. Open record with four second-place finishes.

``She has left me a number of notes, texts, cards, hints that she would like a silver trophy in her hospital room,'' Mickelson said Wednesday. ``I'm going to try to accommodate that.''

She will have surgery July 1.

Wish Amy and family the best.. here's hoping only the best for them..:rose:

Thanks for all the great links and info. I'm really looking forward to the US Open and hope it is a great tournament.

New York loves Phil and always has. And I fully expect the crowds will be pulling for him. Remember last time they sang Happy Birthday to him?

Tiger will certainly have his fans too, and plenty of others. My sons and I were talking and it is no doubt Tiger is the best player out there bar none. And I think he is greatly respected by one and all. He isn't 'loved' like Phil and some other players are. It isn't his personality, or mindset to mingle with the crowds. And Phil is just the opposite he loves it, seems to get energized with it. Two great players with different ways of doing things.

Perhaps one of the most moving pictures was last week at the St. Jude. Phil had a horrible round, but went out to the crowds. There was a group of kids wearing Tshirts that said 'Thinking of Amy'. He was clearly moved. Signed their shirts, hugged some and spent time talking to them. I think it means a great deal to him to see the support from the crowds for Amy. I hope she gathers that love and energy around her to help her fight this disease.

I'm a Phil fan, would love to see him win and bring Amy the trophy. But I sure do hope Sergio has a great tournament too. How can you not love Sergio?

Going to be a tough tournament for Phil.. I really feel for him. I hope he is right in the mix.. for Amy at least.

My heart is always with Tiger.. would love for him to win one for POPS.. he taught Tiger to be tough mentally and that's what it takes to play this goofy game of chasing a little white ball all around.. lol.

Sergio.. heck I didn't know he was going with Greg Norman's daughter.. guess she dumped him..you learn alot reading golf blogs...lol. He's so young.. he has alot of maturing to do (anger management).. my Mom thinks he is adorable.

It's going to be great watching..

Somebody asked about Daly, nope he didn't qualify.. but I was surprised at alot that didn't.. will find alot didn't.

One of us here that follows golf likes Jeff Maggert.. he missed qualifying too.. couldn't remember who it was that was a fan of his.

Nope no John Daly... but they were talking about him the other night.. said he's down to 218 and really focusing on his game.. guess time will tell... it's a shame he was very talented.. but man what a way to schmuck up your life when you have it all going for you..

Just read this and thought... you would enjoy it..
If I'm bugging you with all this pre-crappola.. just let me know.. I just thought it was very touching considering how the media likes to play up their feelings about each other..

<snippet>

This is our Tiger, and our Tiger saves his emotion for the golf course, so to see him Tuesday react with such humanity to Phil Mickelson trying to stay strong through his wife’s battle with breast cancer reminded the shame of it all.

Tiger isn’t a robot. He just plays one on TV.

“I couldn’t imagine dealing with what he has to deal with on a daily basis,” Woods said two days before he and Mickelson tee off at Bethpage Black, site of the U.S. Open. “And hats off to how he’s handled it, because certainly it’s so hard to do. Everywhere you go people are reminding you of it, and you can’t get away from it. And you think that the golf course would be your escape, but it’s not.

“You’re surrounded by people wishing you well the entire time and hope everything works out. But then again, they keep reminding you of the same circumstance you’re dealing with on a daily basis, and you just can’t get away from it.”

Such is familiar, and thus safe, territory for Tiger. He lived it three years ago. When his father and mentor, Earl, got sick and died of prostate cancer, Tiger mourned privately and returned to a public that reminded him to keep his head up and apologized for his loss and did everything – well intentioned though it was – to remind him of the very thing he wanted to forget.

Tiger existed because of Earl, and not just in the biological sense. He pushed Tiger, urged him to turn into the assassin who has piled up 14 major championship wins in 13 years. Earl erred in one sense: with his prophecy that Tiger would change the world. Tiger could change the world, but the qualities his father imbued in him make doing so – at least during his days as a professional – next to impossible.

It's raining.. plenty wet.. 60% chance of rain and by 6 PM EST 100% chance of rain.

Tiger teed off and went way way way left.. but as Tiger does.. he managed a par..

They said everyone that has managed to get in a negative number.. no sooner goes back to even or plus.. it's really ugly our there this morning.

Coverage goes to ESPN at 7 AM I think.. will post a link here in a bit.

Tiger just teed off the 14th.. and has a birdie putt...:tonguewag:

2nd round will start at 4 this afternoon and they will play till they can't see any longer.

Tomorrow they have a 80% chance of rain..

Looks like this tourney is going into next week...

Feel horrible for the people that bought tickets for the days they get rained out.. they are not being reimbursed..nor given another day to attend.. USGA is on right now... maybe they will change their minds, their are some ticked off people...

Usually folks are allowed in to see the portion that would have been played yesteday and when the round is completed, they leave or buy a ticket for the next session.

I think it is going to be extremely difficult trying to get as much play in as possible by Sunday. But the USGA can't control Mother Nature. It isn't like the forecast was for one bad day, yesterday. There is a lot of rain possible. Amazing how they got the course into shape after yesterday.

Currently there are three players under par, and two are amateurs. One has played 11 holes and leads at two under. His name is Martin. The other is in the club house at one under. McDowell is one under through 17.

Tiger did birdie 14 to get to even, but double bogied 15 to get to plus two.

I have a feeling that isn't going to be a bad score. We will probably be seeing quite a few of those awful others on the score cards.

Yeah.. just checked on the Tiger.. he was at +3 after 17 ... OUCH.. but omg looked down the leaderboard and there are players at +11 and 10, it's playing tough out there.

WOW.. Tiger finished with a +4... that's a real OUCH... see what happens... got the leaderboard open on my desktop..

Thursday's tickets will be good for Monday...

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The USGA received so much heat for not giving rain checks and refunds to Thursday ticket holders at the U.S. Open that executive director David Fay heard about it while pumping gas Thursday evening, then again while getting breakfast at Dunkin’ Donuts early Friday morning.

“I’m glad that I had a coat on,” Fay said. “Because the comments weren’t very positive.”

Tickets to the Open are sold by the day, not by the round. So, since each day is sold out, it’s not logistically possible for everyone from Thursday to return for another day of action. But, the USGA came up with a compromise of sorts. Fay said Friday morning at Bethpage Black that all Thursday tickets will be honored for Monday.

It’s too early to speculate, but with an 80 percent chance of showers on Saturday – meaning that there’s a strong possibility of limited action – the USGA could face another ticket dilemma.

“The reality is that we’re sorry those 34,000 fans who came out yesterday didn’t see more golf,” Fay said. “We understand that our ticket policy is both vague and rigid. Certainly in the future we’re going to have to amend our policy to provide more information to the ticket purchasers as to what our policy is.”

Those Thursday ticket holders might be the luckiest ones.. maybe they will see the last day of the tourney.. but my bet is the last day will be Tuesday .. course is playing long.. they said rounds are taking 5 to 6 hours... wow... so we will see... but still glad they got another day of golf for their washed out day.

Hopefully, the US Open folks have learned a lesson and in the future will sell by the round, as has been done in the past. As folks wear a huge colored badge around their necks indicating the "round" ticket, its easy to do and all those with a round 1 ticket leave when its completed. Makes the most sense. Hope this thing does go to Monday so the Thursday folks do not have to pay for an ill conceived plan by the officials. I am surprised the officials got into this position cause clearly, chance of rain is always likely.

These guys that are scoring so great today and are going to play this afternoon.. I think the USGA kind of screwed up in their thinking..

The guys that played early yesterday morning got screwed with the weather.. they probably shouldn't even of started yesterday.. so then they quite halfway through come back this morning early to finish.. that sucks also..

Then you have the group that had late starts yesterday get beautiful weather all day today to play two rounds of golf.. what's up with that..?

They did things the right way. It is unfortunate for those who had horrible weather but that is how it is done. Early first round, late second and late first round early second. They have all had to deal with these kinds of weather issues over the course of their careers.

Some exciting and excellent golf today I really enjoyed it. The coverage was very good. I was pleasantly surprised by that. Mike T and Curtis S aren't my favourites but they did okay.

I really enjoy Nick Faldo but can't stand Kelly T. They need to keep her out of the booth. Not sure if people heard but the Queen is going to be knighting Nick Faldo.

Tiger is out practicing, smiling and laughing.. so hopefully he brought his game today... right now the cut is at 10 strokes behind the leader.. that would make Tiger miss the cut.. he needs some birdies today...

R. Barnes is in the clubhouse with a 8 under par... wow... I don't even know who that guy is:confused:

Second round for those is the early tier is just beginning... but of course no one is covering it.. geesh.. sometimes I hate ESPN...
Ricky was the amatuer champion a few years ago. Played on the Asian tour untill he got his card. Nice kid. He played two rounds with Tiger during another rain delay a few years ago. That is when Tiger told him "Relax kid, its gonna be a long day". Can't identify which tournment that has the Amatuer Champ, the British Open Champ and the Masters Champ playing together in the first two rounds. Great to see Adam Scott and Sergio up there on the leaderboard. I would love to see Sergio win this.

NBC is covering it right now, I have it on. Started coverage at 10 AM when the 'First Wave' players came on to play their second round.

Barnes really tore it up. He was an outstanding amateur couple years back who hasn't done much since. Maybe this week? Happy to see Duval doing well also. Lefty did okay too.

According to my infor on TV NBC is covering from 10 till 6.

Mercedes, you are my herione. I could not find the tournment through channel hoping. Thanks a bunch. Me too. I am so happy for David Duval. He has had a rough, what eight years? Hank Hanley said he had the Yips. Good for NBC as I am boycotting CBS. Any idea how it got over to NBC?

Glad I could help both of you out. They mentioned it yesterday on ESPN so I knew where to go. Was checking computer before 10.

We have been cloudy and now drizzling so I'm real glad to have it on. Getting the laundry and other chores done while I watch and play.

A lot of good play going on, which I think is great. I'm much more impressed with the Black Course than I was in 02. The changes made are a good improvement I think.

ABC the various stations vie for different tournaments especially the majors. ESPN is always paired up with NBC. For the cable/non cable stations. CBS is with the Golf Channel. And I think ABC and TNT work together although they aren't carrying many, if any this year.

Tomorrow will be a whole new game.. Those that didn't have to play in the rain the first day or even Friday morning.. will find it different I think if the weather tomorrow is like it was on Friday.. suppose to be a huge storm tonite which will change the course yet again.

I still can't believe only 6 players out of all those that teed off on Thursday morning made the cut..that's almost unbelievable.

Our NBC station is closely monitoring weather. We are in a tornado watch/warning and they are discussing various cells. So I appreciate the update wasn't sure what time they were planning on round 3 starting. Funny cause the sun is shining after earlier rain, temp is warm, humidity is up. Wouldn't have suspected trouble without the news on tv. Think I'll go back outside and enjoy fresh air and sunshine while I have it. Catch up little later on the golf.

Makes me think of my cousin. His house was the first responders that day, he doesn't live far from this course. He was off on 9/11, but raced into work when word broke. If not, he may well have died that day. He lost many many friends that day. Spent weeks at ground zero and attending funerals.

Just noticed that David Duval is sponsered by NIKE. I don't know but its my opinion that his pal Tiger must have helped negotiate that deal. David is doing great and so pleased to see his doing so well. He missed 184 cuts in the last eight years. I always though one of his problems was losing all that weight which obviously he has regained.
Will be interesting to see who is sponsoring Ricky Barnes next week.

Hello ladies -- thanks so much for all of your posts. I watched it on and off but you all are so really into it I felt that I couldn't really participate but reading was great

I felt so bad for Mickelson and he choked up when he was interviewed about his wife -- he couldn't even complete a sentence. Hope everything goes well - think he said 10 days. :rose:
Of course you are welcome to participate. If we all played as well as we watch, we would be Anita.

And Athena.. next time just jump on in.. it's fun. Next one is in a couple weeks.. and the British Open is always brutal because of the .... WHAT LADIES... the weather...:tonguewag: Here we go again.. another Bethpage...lol.
