They have been talking on the phone since they met, and exchanging letters and Mrs Obama and the girls and family had a 3 hr tour of Buckingham Palace when they were there last week as well as a personal mtg with the Queen.
VERY positive for the First Family and the Queen to get along so well.

Wonderful news for the weekend. I understand that this was a private and a secret event, with no press and no publicity about it.
I honestly think the Queen identifies with Michelle, I am thinking of the Queen as a younger woman, facing all sorts of public opinion from around the world. She also served in a volunteer capacity in WW II, (as a princess) and has been as dedicated to the welfare of her country as Michelle now is.
What wonderful first week of vacation those two young girls are having Paris and London!

This article is a real smile maker isn't it? I guess the Queen wasn't all that upset by the touching as the right would have us believe.
Imagine that, a poor girl from the southside of Chicago making friends with the Queen of England...

LOL Me too and I even read it to my son. I'm not so sure he was as interested as I am, but he was polite about it. LOL
It is simply amazing.

And maybe you have a link to your assertion?
I bet the Queen and Barbara Bush, and Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan all
"palled around" and did a Ouiji Board together, Hillary, too!
By the way, has Chelsea Clinton ever toured Buckingham Palace?

The article said the event was arranged for the youngest daughter's 8th birthday. I guess MO rang up the queen and said 'Can we come over?' and the polite queen would have said 'sure'?
I'm sure all the first ladies have been on very good terms with Queen Elizabeth, it just was not made a big deal as though it was a first!
Michelle was not poor, her father had a good job and provided for his family.

Because it is not like every other First Lady has not been "friends" with the Queen.
Were they?

 Can just see the Queen "warming" up to those four.
No visits/tours found of Chelsea there. But I did run into an interesting series of photos of the Queen with US presidents: http://www.albertastars.com/posts.php?forum=19&topic=3545
Thank you for that wonderful collection of photos. I have a slight nit pick about it, because, I am old enough to do so.
Queen Elizabeth II was NEVER the Queen when Harry Truman was President. Eisenhower was the President when Queen Elizabeth was corronated.

Michelle was not poor, her father had a good job and provided for his family.
Michelle Robinson grew up in the black half of a divided Chicago. She and her brother, Craig, lived with their parents on the second floor of a bungalow. “Two bedrooms, if you want to be generous,” she says.
Her father, Frasier Robinson, was a pump operator for Chicago’s water department and a precinct captain in the Democratic machine. Her mother, Marian, brought workbooks home to keep her children ahead of their classes. The working-class neighborhood was filled with uncles and grandparents, block associations and oak trees. “We knew the gang-bangers — my brother played basketball in the park,” Mrs. Obama says. “Home never feels dangerous.”

First I never said she was poor. But if her father was a pump operator and they lived in 4 rooms they weren't exactly what you would call well-to-do. And I'd be willing to bet it simply never entered her mind that someday she would be writing and calling the Queen of England.
That is very much like a fairy tale to me, and it does make me smile. A lot!

You need to read your post again, you said '...a poor girl from southside.....'. I didn't say they were well-to-do but her father had a good job with the city and I bet they had far more than most around them, plus a mother & father's attention and encouragement.
She met the queen because of who she married, just like the other first ladies.

I remember when monarchy was considered a bad thing. I'm so glad we're more progressive now. Double plus good.

Yes, I did say a "poor girl" I guess because I grew up in surroundings very similar to hers that I do consider it poor to live in a 4 room rental. I know I thought we were poor and both parents worked. Sorry for the mix up on my part.

LONDON — First came the hug, then a guided tour of Buckingham Palace.
First Lady Michelle Obama, on a visit to London last week, got permission from Queen Elizabeth II for a guided tour of the palace with her daughters, Sasha and Malia.
They were shown around the queen's official residence and its gardens and the queen herself greeted them afterward, according to a royal source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was private.

Seems a lot more than any other First Lady has received from the Queen. I'm very proud of our current First Lady.
LONDON — First came the hug, then a guided tour of Buckingham Palace.
In April, during a visit to Britain with her husband, Michele Obama made a warm impression on the queen _ so much so that the monarch strayed from protocol and briefly wrapped her arm around the first lady in a rare public show of affection. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/0..._n_215325.html
'..from the queen' ????.... From what I've read, the event was arranged for the daughter's birthday, the queen would have never refused that. The other first wives or media didn't make a big deal out of it, we're hearing about this because the Obama's need attention, I guess

And their aim is to stay 'popular', that's how they got in this time. But 'popular' will carry them only so far, don't think it'll help next time.

It's called the Obama PR machine. Oh, and look at all the people that fall for it.
Queen Elizabeth sent a hand written note to Nancy Reagen when Pres Reagen died. That's kinda friendly too.
imo
Yes, I agree! I wonder if they are already running a draft for the future history books to make sure they don't miss anything! LOL!

Queen Elizabeth and President Reagan were friendly because they shared a love for horses and riding... They even rode together at Windsor Castle...
According to former secretary of state James Baker:
Reagan was with the Queen at Windsor Castle one morning, and since he and the Queen shared a love for horses, they decided to go horseback riding together. Some distance from the Castle, as Reagan was following the Queen up a small grade, the Queen's horse decided to loudly expel some gas in sync with each step.
Embarrassed, the Queen turned around and said. "Oh I am so sorry Mr. President."
"No problem your majesty", replied Reagan, "I thought it was the horse!"
Baker swears this is a true story.

The need for media attention is embarassing. Everything they do - is overexposed and touted as a FIRST!!
Truth is, many of their "firsts" are merely imitations, yet the people .

What beautiful styles they wore back then - Jackie Kennedy looked like a princess, a vision of beauty!
Wonder why try to be something one is not, instead of creating a look of one's own?

"Twenty six years after Ronald Reagen rode horses with Queen Elizabeth II, President Bush flew to Windsor Castle on Sunday for a brief visit with the reigning monarch."
"Bush and first lady Laura Bush had sandwiches, cake, and of course afternoon tea with the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, marking only the second time that Elizabeth has invited a U.S. leader to her favorite official residence."
Thank you!

Yes and I'm hoping we don't have 3 1/2 more years of the first 6 mos.!!
I still own a Jacquie Kennedy A Line dress and coat from the 60s. Thankfully it aged from white to a cream and not a ratty yellow. It is still one of the best looking outfits around and I wear it to wedding, reunions, etc with snazzy shoes, scarfs and Mary Francis pocketbooks.
