View Full Version : dogs skin turning black

i have a 8 year old maltese, i love her dearly and the last time i bathed her acouple days ago i thought she had rooled in dirt and got her fur really dirty but, while bathing her i see her skin is actually turning black, not just alittle area but, pretty much her whole back, anyone have this happen to thier dog?

I have a 5 year old maltese, no kproblems so far with the skin. He is actually at the groomers today.

I googled it and found other dog owners discussing this problem. You want to contact a good vet and discuss it with him/her. Have a thyroid test done.

carol25 for the link, kind of scary, she is over weight for her size and i hope that is the problem but, definatly will have it checked, i can't amagine losing this little girl, she doesn't act like anything is wrong, perky, happy, good appetite and very playful.

The article did mention allergies as well. I am hoping that it is something that can be fixed easily. IIRC, low thyriod would make one heavy, too. So it could be just a matter of low thyroid!

My mothers Maltese has a blackish splotchy area on his tummy...Vet diagnosed allergies years ago.

"Black Skin Disease" sounds and can be REAL scarey but dont assume thats what is it.
My cousins Pom had diagnosed BSD and the 2 dogs, hers & my moms, had different symptoms & treatments and the "black skin" looked nothing alike.

Research, research, research.....and ask a vet.
