MONROE, Mich. -- Police issued an Amber Alert Sunday for a missing 5-year-old girl in Monroe.

Neviaeh Amyah Buchanan was last seen at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at 1166 N. Macomb Street in Monroe.

Buchanan's mother tells Local 4 her daughter was outside playing with a friend. The friend came into her home and told the mother that Neviaeh was playing with her scooter.

The mother went outside to tell her daughter not to go near the road, but when she got there the girl was gone.

Buchanan is 3'8", 45 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a red, white and blue shirt and knee-length jeans.

Police believe she was abducted and is in extreme danger.

MONROE, Mich. -- A friend of a woman whose child is the subject of an Amber Alert is being questioned by the Monroe Police Department.

George Kennedy is in police custody in connection with the disappearance of 5-year-old Neviaeh Amyah Buchanan.

The girl's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, told Local 4 Kennedy has been her friend for several years, and she knows he has a criminal record and is a sex offender.

Police would not confirm that Kennedy is a sex offender, but the only George Kennedy registered in Monroe is on the sex offender list.

UPDATE: George Kennedy, who is the boyfriend of mother Jennifer Buchanan, was questioned by police Sunday evening, says the Monroe County Sheriff's Dept. We know that he remains in custody and that the search continues for 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

News 11's Tim Miller reports that Kennedy has been listed in Michigan since 2002 as a sex offender. His charges were "attempted criminal sexual conduct" and "attempted children-accosting for immoral purposes."

In other developments Monday, the girl’s mother, Jenny Buchanan, was held for hours at police headquarters and reportedly took a polygraph test, which police said was common in such cases.
However, her mother, Sherry Buchanan, who has custody of Nevaeh, which is Heaven spelled backwards, said she felt her daughter was being treated as a suspect.
"She would never hurt that little girl," a tearful Ms. Buchanan said. "She loves that girl."
Jenny and Mr. Kennedy reportedly met at the probation office, friends said. In 2006, Ms. Buchanan was sentenced on burglary charges after she and an accomplice were caught breaking into upscale homes in affluent neighborhoods in the Monroe area.
The girl’s father is Shane Hinojosa of Toledo. He said because of a dispute with the family, he has not seen his daughter for years. He said he started another family and has a baby on the way.
Mr. Hinojosa said he volunteered to take a polygraph test because "I want my name cleared," he said. He was out at the complex with others waiting for any word on Nevaeh.
"I’m sick to my stomach," he said. "I can’t stand it."

MONROE, Mich. -- A third man has been named a person of interest in the case of a missing 5-year-old Monroe girl.

James Easter, 69, of Monroe was taken in for questioning Saturday.

Easter is being held on unrelated charges. Police have not said why he has been named a person of interest in the case.

Investigators would only say that Easter frequently visits a woman, who may be a family member or his girlfriend, at the Charlotte Arms apartment complex where Nevaeh Buchanan lives. She was last seen Sunday riding her scooter in the parking lot of the complex.

Police believe she was abducted and is in extreme danger.

Boxes of evidence were carried away from Easter's Monroe home, which is about two miles from the Charlotte Arms apartments, and taken to the Michigan State Crime Lab.

He is being held on arson charges. Neighbors told Local 4 he burns a lot of things in his yard, but other than that -- he keeps to himself.

Sunday, investigators also announced that they had found two young boys, ages 7 and 10, who had been playing outside when Nevaeh disappeared. The two are being questioned to find out if they saw anything.

Police have identified a third man as a person of interest: James Easter, 64, of Monroe, who is being held on unrelated charges of unlawful open burning.

Easter was arraigned Sunday afternoon and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail after failing to post a $250 bond.

Police searched the Easter's home Sunday and dug up the back yard of his property after receiving a tip. Boxes of evidence were taken from Easter's home to the Michigan State Crime Lab.

Neighbors said Easter mows lawns and performs odd jobs throughout the area.

"I didn't know what to think when I heard he was in custody," said neighbor Donna Werner, 51. "He's always helped me out and was always kind to me."

Sheriff Crutchfield said he is prepared to ask for additional law enforcement assistance, but as of midday today, he didn’t have any further leads on where to look.

"That person is out there," he said. "We’re doing everything we know how to do."

MONROE — After getting a phone call from distraught Jennifer Buchanan telling him that her daughter, Nevaeh, was missing, George Kennedy said he immediately went to the girl's North Macomb Street neighborhood to look for the 5-year-old.

Kennedy, 39, who was taken into custody on unrelated charges the night Nevaeh disappeared, told The Blade Wednesday that he drove with his girlfriend, Savannah Gray, to the child's preschool on Riverview Avenue, near her home in Charlotte Arms apartments, and then went to Greenwood Apartments to continue the search.

'I figured maybe she was back there playing. Savannah went one way and I went another way,' said Kennedy, who has been locked up on an unrelated parole violation in the Monroe County jail since May 24, when Nevaeh went missing. '"We went to certain areas that I thought she could be."

After a security guard told him that police had been at the apartments looking for her, Kennedy said Nevaeh's mother reached him on his cell phone to tell him that sheriff's deputies wanted to talk to him about the missing girl because they learned he was a convicted sex offender.

In an exclusive interview with The Blade, Kennedy said he wasted no time in returning to his Motel 7 room on South Dixie Highway, where he met his parole officer and sheriff's detectives, who put him in handcuffs and took him to the jail.

"I didn't take her and I definitely didn't kill her," he said.

"I am 39 years old. I don't want to grow old by myself. I just want a companion and to be happy. If they got a kid, I don't have a problem with that and helping them raise kids. I ain't preying on women to be with their kids," he said.

"I was a father figure to that little girl," he said. "Because I am a sex offender it doesn't mean I have to bury myself under a rock. I have no regrets about knowing Nevaeh, her mother, or grandmother. I care about them a lot."

"They didn't want me talking to anybody. They had me locked down in a room for over a week," he said. "They wouldn't let me out for my own safety because everyone in the county wants to hurt me and crucify me."

Investigators searched Kennedy's motel room after a 5-year-old playmate said she witnessed Nevaeh being stabbed with a knife after going "into the woods ... to meet Daddy George" and an 8-year-old neighbor boy who said the girl was kidnapped by a "bad man" and stabbed.

"She wasn't going to go into the woods for anybody. I just don't see her doing that at all," he said.

Kennedy said there was blood in the motel room because he cut himself shaving and blood was left in the room after his girlfriend, Ms. Gray, bled after getting a tattoo. He said that he cut himself with the multiknife while fishing several days before Nevaeh vanished and may have left blood on it.

Nevaeh's extended family said it knows nothing about a possible motive or scenario.


All it knows is that Nevaeh was a cheery kid with a bright smile who - poof! - was gone one day and then, nearly two weeks later, was probably found buried beneath concrete rubble along the River Raisin, a happenstance discovery by a 51-year-old fisherman who smelled a corpse.

The makeshift memorial outside 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan's apartment has grown since the discovery of a little girl's body Thursday -- and the message has turned political.


"Capital punishment," read signs taped to the tent that protects dozens of stuffed animals, cards, balloons and candles near Nevaeh's front door.

Authorities said Nevaeh's family might go this weekend to the Wayne County morgue, where the girl's body underwent an autopsy Friday, to positively identify her. Family members said Nevaeh never had X-rays taken of her teeth so dental comparisons aren't possible.

I had just completed a story about this very area for the latest edition of Monroe Magazine. My focus was on good biking routes in Monroe County and I traced a route from the Village of Dundee, along Plank Road, across the Ida-Maybee Road bridge, west along Dixon and then back to Dundee.

That, of course, is the area in which the body of Nevaeh Buchanan was found. While researching my story, I even stopped at the fishing spot in question and snapped some photos of the nearby railroad bridge. It chills me to think that just a few weeks after the photos were taken that someone visited the same location with sinister motivations.
