Oh that's so tragic. I wonder if it was the cord to the locking device. Some have a lock devide that hangs from a cord but I don't remember mine being long enough a loop for anything like this to occur. The poor little girl and poor parents and her poor 7 year old brother who found her. What trauma this is for him. I pray she'll survive and be well.

It sure does not sound good; the article says she is on life support. I'm not a fan of Mike Tyson but I wouldn't wish something like this on my worst enemy. It sounds like it was just one of those accidents that can happen with things that are around the house when you have a curious child.

that if the childs oxygen was cut off for just a few minutes, and she was
not able to be revived by paramedics at the secene, nor the hospital, she is more than likely on a ventilator, brain dead, and now the family will have to make the decision when to turn the machines off. IF she recovers, lives, she will be at the very least in a vegatative state (Terry Schaivo) and dependent on the ventilator to breathe. So sad, but it happens everyday to people that are put on artificial breathing machines and they were already brain dead.

I am not going to say I hope she gets better, I am going to say I hope the decisions made and the outcome are truly whats in the childs best interest. I will pray for Mike Tyson's family.

My sis and I still remove the ties on sweatshirts, hoodies, rain jackets and such since years ago a little girl was killed when her hoodie cord got caught in an escalator and she was strangled. It was horrible.

Need to be carefull of window blinds cords especially near a childs crib or play area, too..

Can always hope for the best. My nephew was around this age when he got over a gate and fell in a pool after sneaking outside at my uncle's house. They estimate he was underwater for about 9 minutes from the brain damage they found (mostly to his speech center), but was able to be revived by my cousing who had recently taken classes that included CPR. He does have some learning issues, but otherwise is fully functional adult today. I did see mentioned here though that she was not revived even at the hospital which would lead to extensive damage after that long, but I wasn't seeing that in the articles unless I missed it.

I join you in wishing what's best for the child. My sister died of sudden heart attack and was without oxygen too long. They say you have about 4 minutes. Death is a process that begins in the brain.
The heart can be shocked back and life support administered but the person's gone for all intents and purposes.

I have a friend with a dtr on life support for 25 years. Another with a son in that condition for 32 years. Medical science has that ability. The trouble is they get pneumonia about once a month and ongoing infections.

I pray for this family and for this little child.

If the water was very cold, this is possible but it sounds like Exodus Tyson's accident happened at room temperature.

This was in a swimming pool during the summer, so wouldn't be very cold. I'm no doctor, but my understanding is that after 4 minutes with no oxygen, damge starts and will continue the longer there is no oxygen. As I said, my nephew was under they figure for about 9 minutes when they determined the amount of damage to their best of their ability. I just hope it wasn't long for this little girl.

Who would ever think their child was in life threatening danger in the next room at your own home? I don't think of a treadmill as being a huge threat to a 5 yr. old, although I would keep it unplugged unless I watched. Still who would think she could strangle herself, a bizarre type of hazzard in which she was unable to call for help? You know how you always listen for trouble when your child is out of sight, even the next room? A terrible freak accident and unthinkable tragedy. :sad:

Like the Doctor on Fox said today. We must child proof our homes and get down on our hands and knees to see what a young child sees that may be of interest to them that adults don't notice since they are taller. She said it would not take but a couple of minutes to render the child unconscious.

The treadmills I've owned, there's a locking device tied to a string/cord. Once the locking "key" is placed into it's lock the way to disengage it is the same for a safety seatbelt. A 4 year wouldn't be able to undo it if their head was caught in the loop between the attached end & the locked key in place.

My treadmills didn't have a cord long enough for this accident to occur but apparently Tyson's did. It's not that she put a loop around her own neck. It apparently was hanging there enough for her to get her head into and not enough space given the treadmill console to get out. It's hard to explain. I tried to find a photo in all the treadmills for sale online but they don't show the key and cord it's on.

I'm sure in the future they will make this feature with safety in mind due to this accident.

Honestly I don't think anyone can think of eveything. Otherwise the treadmill designers would've already thought of this. You can bet they'll rethink it in the future after this accident.

I was reading online about safety features of treadmills yesterday and they tell people to unplug them and put the key in so the treadmill couldn't engage. Believe me if there had been no key this little girl would still be alive. It was the cord to the safety key that chocked her. It apparently formed a loop from the attached end to the key lock area. That's all I can think of. Very tragic. I hope they tell people how it happened so they can do something to prevent another child falling victim to it. heartbreaking.

I think it's the most likely that she put her head in the apparent loop like kids stick their heads between rungs of a banister railing. Only with the plyable cord all she would've had to have done is twirl once trying to free herself and she would've been chocked. The poor baby. My heart goes out to this family.

Oh gosh I wasn't trying to convince you of anything. You wondered and I was trying to explain. I started out by describing the treadmills I've owned. I have no idea what kind of treadmill Tyson has.

It's that when the news said the child choked on a cord, that's the only cord I've ever seen on a treadmill. I do hope the news can explain it so other children won't fall victim. It is very tragic.

I've never had a treadmill, and don't really want one, but I have heard of an adult losing a finger in the treadmill. I don't know how it happened, just happened to be in the plastic surgeon's office when they got a call that the doctor had to go to try to reattach. I had to go back another day for my appointment.

this pretty much says what happened and I has just seen some that have a small looped cord up by the console..so sad what a horrible accident the machine was not on it was just the cord and she was unable to get out of it...god bless this family..:crying:

I have met Tyson many, many years ago way back when he trained at Johnny Tocco's (who was a beloved Friend of the family) gym. I didn't even know Tyson had moved out of NV. He use to live in Ted Binion's neighborhood area.

My treadmill has a cord that hangs down. It is the safety switch. The treadmill won't start w/o it in place and the treadmill stops, if it is pulled out. It attaches to the console, by a magnet. No way could a child get hanged on it.

I am thinking that Tyson had very professional equipment that is different than anything that we might have. But, on the other hand the children shouldn't be around his exercise equipment.

What a freak accident. You just never know.

Second....I design treadmills and I can't think of a treadmill in the market that has a cord hanging down that isn't just held onto the console with a magnet. Once you pull on the cord it detaches from the console...it is a safety device. There certainly are no permanently attached cords hanging down on a treadmill console by design.

There are safety standards (UL, ASTM and CE to name a few)we engineers follow to ensure safety. I read in one article that said it was the power cord. I can only think that someone unplugged and looped the power cord around the handlebars in front of the console. I do this when I'm moving treadmills around the shop.

I read that Tyson has been clean for 15 months. I hope this is true and he stays that way. They say things happen for a reason. Maybe he can use his name and save some other child.

That really is so sad. I think all of us know, that you can never be too careful with little ones and toddlers and young children. And I am sure alot of us know and were at one time or another sternly warned by our parents when we were little about the dangers of thease things. I recall being little around four or five and I was playing with blinds, and my mother sternly warned me about that. And I know numerous times my father would warn me about things like this.
And I am sure Mike Tyson and his girlfreind were very aware of thease things too. I am sure it was an awful accident.
It is so sad because I think alot of us had really grown up with Mike Tyson over the years. From when he took the boxing world by storm. His return to boxing. In 1995 and 1996 was an absolute barnburner. I remember the anxiousness and curiostiy of his first fight back.
ANd his first bout with Evander Hollyfield was a classic.
And then of course things went down for him.
He had kind of rebounded and life, and I think had started to enjoy life and be likable, he had starred in films. And I think modern Americans who like what is going on in the world or even in pop culture, were really starting to like him. I understand Mike Tyson has alot of children from differnt people, and I take that into account when talking about him, and weather I agree with every thing about him.
For me Mike Tyson was and is a role model. He inspires me when I play sports, and I box as a hobbie, and the thought of Tyson, really at times goes through me. I mean I am that ferocious untouchable type guy when I box, even if it's by myself on my own boxing bag. That thought goes through me. And it can be a poweful thing at times.
Anytime you hear about a child passing away though it is sad, and makes us think about other young childrem babies and toddlers in our lives. And how much we love them and care about them. And do not want them to hurt.
That is so sad about little Exodus.

i've been going around with a lump in my throat over this tragedy for the last couple days. 3 years ago our then 4 yo granddaughter was playing around our treadmill (after being told NUMEROUS times to stop) but she turned it on anyway. it launched her clear across the room & shook all of us up pretty bad. dh & i moved the dang thing into the garage immediately & sold it at the garage sale the following week.

whatever we might think of mike tyson, it's hearbreaking to hear of parents losing their babies.
