MONROE, Mich. -- A friend of a woman whose child is the subject of an Amber Alert is being questioned by the Monroe Police Department.

George Kennedy is in police custody in connection with the disappearance of 5-year-old Neviaeh Amyah Buchanan.

The girl's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, told Local 4 Kennedy has been her friend for several years, and she knows he has a criminal record and is a sex offender.

Police would not confirm that Kennedy is a sex offender, but the only George Kennedy registered in Monroe is on the sex offender list.

Jennifer Buchanan said she was held for many hours without food during questioning by investigators and that she felt like she was being treated as a suspect in the case of her missing daughter, Nevaeh.
"I guess I failed one question," Ms. Buchanan told The Evening News. "But I haven’t slept since she’s been missing. I haven’t eaten. I felt I was being held against my will. It was horrible."
Monroe County Sheriff’s Maj. Dan Motylinski confirmed that Ms. Buchanan failed a portion of the polygraph test. He also said that George Kennedy, a man being held in jail on unrelated charges, also failed parts of the polygraph test.
However, Maj. Motylinski said neither Ms. Buchanan nor Mr. Kennedy is considered a suspect in the girl’s disappearance. He said they were being questioned along with many others in an ongoing effort to find the girl.

Her most recent legal troubles were related to breaking into some of the more up-scale homes in Monroe a couple years back.

The locals organized a search over the weekend. It's my understanding that quite a few folks gathered in the K-mart parking lot about a mile away from where Nevaeh was taken from to organize a search.

There are flyers plastered everywhere...gas stations, stores, restaurants, hospital....I guess it's not really shocking, but it is strange when it's happening in the town you live in. Everyone keeps saying the same thing - "How could this happen in Monroe"...

The locals organized a search over the weekend. It's my understanding that quite a few folks gathered in the K-mart parking lot about a mile away from where Nevaeh was taken from to organize a search.

There are flyers plastered everywhere...gas stations, stores, restaurants, hospital....I guess it's not really shocking, but it is strange when it's happening in the town you live in. Everyone keeps saying the same thing - "How could this happen in Monroe"...

Her most recent legal troubles were related to breaking into some of the more up-scale homes in Monroe a couple years back.

The only thing I know about the Kennedy guy is that he's been living in a Motel 7 (it's horrific in that place) that is really run down. I've heard rumors, and in one of the articles, that he was dating Jennifer, but she doesn't seem to confirm that. The motel 7 is literally just a couple hundred feet away from a quarry. The quarry used to be empty, but over the past 5-10 years, a developer stared building homes around it and they filled it with water. They have been doing a lot of searching around the quarry.

The general mood is that people really seem to be in shock and everyone is praying this little girl comes home okay, but many are not hopeful given the circumstances.

The bad thing about living in a small town is that rumors start quickly. If I do share something here that i heard through the grapevine I will certainly note it as such.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed....poor girl!

The mother of the missing 5-year-old girl said late this morning that she failed one question during a polygraph exam Monday, but it was due to stress and lack of sleep.
Jennifer Buchanan said she was held for many hours without food during questioning by investigators and that she felt like she was being treated as a suspect in the case of her missing daughter, Nevaeh.
"I guess I failed one question," Ms. Buchanan told The Evening News. "But I haven’t slept since she’s been missing. I haven’t eaten. I felt I was being held against my will. It was horrible." Monroe County Sheriff’s Maj. Dan Motylinski confirmed that Ms. Buchanan failed a portion of the polygraph test. He also said that George Kennedy, a man being held in jail on unrelated charges, also failed parts of the polygraph test.
However, Maj. Motylinski said neither Ms. Buchanan nor Mr. Kennedy is considered a suspect in the girl’s disappearance. He said they were being questioned along with many others in an ongoing effort to find the girl.

I mean come on, her daughter is missing. Of course they are going to question her. This isn't about her...it's about her daughter. If she has a problem with that, she needs to get over it. The boyfriend of a mother whose 5-year-old daughter is the subject of an Amber Alert and his brother are in police custody and are being questioned about her disappearance.


George Kennedy has been dating the now missing Nevaeh Buchanan's mother, Jennifer Buchanan. She told Local 4 she had been friends with Kennedy for several years and she knew he had a criminal record and is on the sex offender list.


Police would not confirm that Kennedy is a sex offender. But, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections Web site, the only George Kennedy registered in Monroe is a sex offender.

Police said Kennedy is being detained because he violated the terms of his parole by being near a child.

Another man, who was described only as a transient, was also questioned. He was released Tuesday afternoon.

ITA with almost all your post. However, imo, Tori's mom is still not totally off the hook, imo. I'm sure there's more of a connection between her/her b/f and the perps.

The mother (hate to call her that) in this instance (and the g/mother if she was aware of the S.O. status of the b.f) are both culpable if, God forbid, Neviaeh has been killed. I just watched some of the coverage on HLN. Why is her dad wearing that white sheet/blanket around him? I thought that was very bizzare.

I pray this beautiful little girl is found alive but the odds are so against her. Another dysfunctional family. Dad hasn't seen her in 2 years. Mom has a sex offender boyfriend. Mom was deceptive on some of the polygraph questions.

I agree with Pat Brown. It could be anyone at this point. Maybe even someone who didn't know the girl and just snatched her off the street while she was playing.

shoot! i went to bed, almost asleep and the news came on.
they did report the the columbus siting. i don't think anything is new on their site yet though

but....then they came back with breaking news that Nevaeh's father went out into some woods searching (which i think i saw him say on video the cops told him not to do) but anyways....he and others said they heard a child calling. they thought the child yelled 'shane' or 'mom'

i, too, am from monroe and the situation here just gets bleaker & bleaker by the minute. i live within a half mile of this apt complex, and while the apts themselves aren't the best, the neighbourhood is still a good one. it chills me to the bone to think that this is going on at all, let alone so close to home. it is easy enough to see SO addresses on registry websites, but one must remember that these sickos don't stay home 24/7. they are constantly out seeking their next victims & preying on our children.

on a personal note, to top it off my daughter was one of a half dozen kids who rode the same bus with nevaeh to their preschool run by our city's public schools. they sat & played together nearly every day, and their classes just graduated days ago. i am trying to keep my child insulated from this as best as i can, because her young mind simply cannot comprehend the horror of it all, but i can't even think of what i am to tell her if she hears any of the circumstances about this tragic situation. it is truly heartbreaking.

Family members said George Kennedy, 39, has been dating the mother of Nevaeh Buchanan, who is missing.

Jennifer Buchanan denies that she was dating Kennedy and said they have been friends for several years. She said she knew he had a criminal record and is on the sex offender list.:cursing:

In 2002, Kennedy was sentenced to 15 years in prison for home invasion and third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was released in 2007 and remains on parole until July 2009.

Police said Kennedy is being detained because he violated the terms of his parole by having a relationship with a woman who has a child under the age of 17.

Jennifer Buchanan's brother, Michael Buchanan told Local 4 he knew Kennedy was a sex offender and he used to fight with his sister about letting him around his niece.

Another man, who was described only as a transient, was also questioned in the case. He was released Tuesday afternoon.

Sorry if already posted but just watching all the videos so the grandma had custody she even called herself mom so sounds like JB was not to much of a mother and her bio dad also had not been in her life for some time...and she said JB met Kennedy while she was incarcerated and on probation anyone know what she had got in trouble for and why the father was not in her life..not that I blame him but cant really come and start pointing fingers about who your child was around if you were not even around to protect her I am sick of these parents putting their kids in danger and then this happens..JMO of course

Thank you for updating us on the local efforts to find Nevaeh. Here is part of a New York Times news article that explains how parents can tell children about the dangers from predators without scaring them.

Question: “How do you make a child aware of danger without frightening her?

Answer: Kids tell us how much they are ready to handle by the questions they ask us, like “where do babies come from,” returned with an answer of “mommy’s tummy.” If a child asks “how did the baby get there,” that requires more detail. Point is, when it comes to questions about safety; answer them without being overly detailed. Give honest answers and give them more when they are ready to hear or desire more information.”

I am just wondering if she failed the question about her and him being B/F and G/F she would know he would break parole if they knew cause it was part of his parole not to be around any women with children actually he had about 20 things he had to do or not do or go back to the slammer for some time and she just got out in January after taking a 2yr plea deal on home invasion...he also failed some questions so just figured that may be the ones they failed...I pray she has no idea what happened but still angry she was not watching out for her child well her mothers child since she had custody of her from the time she was born..

When a child is abducted 86 % of the time he/she knows the abductor. It may not be a close relationship but they have met the abductor before.

In this case the child has come into contact with a SO because mom invited him in to her life. Jennifer knows she put her child in harms way and did so for her own personal reasons. I am not sure if she has broken any laws but her penalty likely will be that for the rest of her life she will have to deal with the fact she brought Kennedy into Nevaeh’s life, she encouraged the relationship, and in so doing set the stage for a tragedy.

The fact that those actions are unforgivable is a given.

I agree with you. I simply don't understand this mother's or grandma's logic? I still want to know where in the heck was Kennedy's parole officer? The parole officer should have been keeping better tabs on Kennedy.

as for the bio dad, we was only about 17 when nevaeh was born, and he & mom weren't really dating at that stage. i could see how he'd drop out of her life if there were any sort of bad feelings between the two parents. not that it's ideal, of course, but few people that age have the tools to deal with something like raising a child.

why the people actively in her life didn't go to the authorities about the SO being around the child at all, i can't begin to comprehend. hopefully more will be brought to light at the news conference at 10:30. everyone around here is on edge, wondering if this poor child is ok.

I have no problem with him if he wanted nothing to do with his child but he should not say if I had her I would not allow her to be around people like that..can not really point fingers when you have not seen your child for 3 years and getting ready to have another child...IMO the mother has been out of her life for at least 2yrs when she went to the slammer for home invasion so her mother had custody of her since she was born or at least that is what she said in the interview..if you can lay down and have a child you should be grown up enough to raise it..I know I was a single mother at 18 and his father has never been in his life and he is almost 19 now and I sure in the heck would never have allowed my children to be around these kind of sickos nor break the law and end up in the slammer for 2yrs I grew up real fast it is not that hard if you put your kids first...at this time I only care about this child not the reason they were dead beat parents. WWJ's Pat Vitale reports two quarries, along Dixie Highway, were being searched late Wednesday morning for Nevaeh Buchanon, who was last seen outside the Charlotte Arms apartments on Macomb Street in Monroe. All 180 units in the apartment have been searched.

"He was basically the only male figure in her life because her (expletive) father wanted to disappear," she said. She said he acted like she was joking when she called him to tell her Nevaeh had disappeared. He helped search until investigators took him into custody, she said.

Exactly. I'm sorry but if my daughter were missing and I couldn't find her within the first ten minutes or less of looking for her, I would call 911 without a second thought. Even if they came all the way out and found her after only a few minutes, it would still be worth it to call just in case. It's nothing to play around with! Two hours is INSANE and makes no sense.

In the pic, she has gone from a very girlish looking girl to one that looks like a boy, to me. The recent pic of her looks like a skater boy.

That's a real concern - to me - to see the two completely different appearances.

MONROE, Mich. - More than 100 members of a task force comprised of local and federal law enforcement agencies are working to find a 5-year-old Monroe girl whose disappearance three days ago is being investigated as an abduction.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said during a news conference Wednesday morning that his office as well as the FBI and others are staffed 24 hours a day trying to locate Nevaeh Buchanan.

Meanwhile, FOX 2's Taryn Asher has learned that Michigan State Police cadaver dogs are searching two separate stone quarries in the Monroe-area for the missing girl. This comes after FOX 2 first reported Tuesday night that police are testing the blood found on a fishing knife belonging to George Kennedy, the boyfriend of Nevaeh's mother.

Sources say it is human blood and the MSP crime lab is currently conducting tests to determine whether the blood is Nevaeh's or not.

Kennedy is a convicted sex offender and police say he is currently a person of interest being held on a parole violation. FOX 2 has also learned another man is being questioned, but they are not releasing information about his identity.

Nevaeh last was seen Sunday evening in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Monroe, 40 miles south of Detroit. All 180 units in the apartment have been searched.

of course everyone's main thought is whether or not nevaeh is safe. it wasn't posted as an excuse for his comments nor as condoning either parent's lack of interest in keeping her safe, it was just to answer the questions that people had asked about his absence in her life. this child should never have been raised around either parent, and i'd have rather seen her in a stable & loving foster home than in a situation as dangerous as the one her mother put her in.

I know yesterday they did a pretty big search, alot of people showed up.
They need to get more info from the girl who went to tell her mother she was riding in the parking lot. How long did it take for the mother to run outside? telegraph is parallel to n macomb street (where her apt complex is), about a mile or two west. not near the power plant either. if you know monroe, her apt was nearly next door to mercy memorial hospital downtown. of course, in the two hr time frame it took her to contact authorities, anyone could have taken this child to any of those places. like you said, there are an awful lot of spots out of view here to hide a child. being so close to lake erie and all the boggy areas here is not a pleasant thought.

as for the discrepancies in how she looked between the pictures released, they were both school pictures taken thru the preschool (i'm not sure why they keep calling it a headstart one when it isn't-?), one pic at the beginning of the year, one at the end...and the one at the end was taken at the end of their school day. lol, most of the kids looked pretty raggy by that point of the afternoon.

no new info is being released yet about the knife or other evidence seized.

MONROE, Mich. - More than 100 members of a task force comprised of local and federal law enforcement agencies are working to find a 5-year-old Monroe girl whose disappearance three days ago is being investigated as an abduction.

Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said during a news conference Wednesday morning that his office as well as the FBI and others are staffed 24 hours a day trying to locate Nevaeh Buchanan.

Meanwhile, FOX 2's Taryn Asher has learned that Michigan State Police cadaver dogs are searching two separate stone quarries in the Monroe-area for the missing girl. This comes after FOX 2 first reported Tuesday night that police are testing the blood found on a fishing knife belonging to George Kennedy, the boyfriend of Nevaeh's mother.

Sources say it is human blood and the MSP crime lab is currently conducting tests to determine whether the blood is Nevaeh's or not.

Kennedy is a convicted sex offender and police say he is currently a person of interest being held on a parole violation. FOX 2 has also learned another man is being questioned, but they are not releasing information about his identity.

Nevaeh last was seen Sunday evening in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Monroe, 40 miles south of Detroit. All 180 units in the apartment have been searched.

of course everyone's main thought is whether or not nevaeh is safe. it wasn't posted as an excuse for his comments nor as condoning either parent's lack of interest in keeping her safe, it was just to answer the questions that people had asked about his absence in her life. this child should never have been raised around either parent, and i'd have rather seen her in a stable & loving foster home than in a situation as dangerous as the one her mother put her in.

Telegraph is about 1 to 1.5 miles from Charlotte Arms Apartments. Monroe street is about .5 miles. Telegraph and Monroe run parallel. Apartment is not super close to the plant, at least 5 miles, I'd say.

its unbelievable. As i heard a commentator say tonight, it is one thing if they didn't KNOW he was an SO, and arent intelligent enough or worldly enough to look him up. Exactly my feelings. This is VERY COMMON. It doesn't often make national news but I can't tell you how many cases I've read. A little 5 yr.old in South Fla.--her mother was dating a known SO. He gets angry one day, beats mom unconscious and throws her out of a moving car. Then he takes the kid to alligator alley and throws her off bridge into the gators. MOM LIVES. Child was torn apart. Many, many cases not as sensational but child get molested and lives or chronically molested.

It's time to hold these men crazy mothers accountable criminally. They're always given a break because after all, they suffered losing or having a child raped. Bullcr@p! They should do some hard time and take parenting and sex offender classes while doing their time. Every woman has the same access to criminal profiles for SO's that we use here.
