Well...I enjoyed it. I thought the president did pretty well.
I thought that Wanda went a little too far a couple of times, but nowhere near as far as Colbert went a few years ago. LOL
But thinking it over, I don't think that the president gave the right any ammo, however no telling what they heard that I missed.
AND BTW I thought MO looked great. I loved that color.

He knows it was handed to his side tonight and they're not happy.

Buchanan liked the President's speech. He said that he was very, very funny.
I loved the wassup to Steele and the comment about Boehner's not in nature color. Laughed out loud!
Sykes is so funny--I've always loved her.
The part about Bo and how Obama had rescued a country from an abusive owner, so let him have a fresh start with the dog was truly funny. She made me laugh out loud several times. Her line about being able to "break Sean Hannity just by putting him in a middle seat in coach" was fantastic.
As were her comments about the pride of Af-Ams at having the first black president--unless he messes up.

You're right of course. But we'll be hearing for days about "sorry, but the Republicans don't qualify for a bail out and Dick Cheney doesn't count as a liablity". And the Boehner joke will be the second most talked about I'm sure.
What they won't mention of course is that Obama went after Biden more than he went after anyone else.

The truth is an absolute defense! Boehner's awful fake tan is a color that does not exist in nature.
The Biden jokes by the President, and especially by Sykes, were hillarious.

It was terrific, even Buchanan said the Pres. did well, but that the comedian went over the top. It was edgy, but it was about Limbaugh, Hannity, Cheney -- after the stuff that comes out of their mouth -- what they can dish it out but not take it? Only the Palin joke, maybe was a little edgy. But then she called the president a terrorist etc.
PUUULEEZE. She a comedian and Rush hasn't been very nice about about Barack's race etc. claims he's a comedian, different strokes for different folks. As far as Fox table etc: well they gafaw and make fun 24/7 and call it "news" fair and balanced. LOL.
Maybe Buchanan is just toooooo old fashioned, out of touch. I LOL through the whole thing. And she joked about Obama, Biden, too. But who better to zing the GOP? They made fun of Gore, Clinton, etc.
I'm sure Fox will have a field day with "clips" next week. Make entire shows about what she said. Much to do about nothing. IMHO

President Obama roasted the press, Republicans and members of his own administration in a very well-received speech on Saturday at the White House Correspondents Association dinner. Among his targets were RNC chairman Michael Steele, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, his daughters, and GOP leader John Boehner. Obama ended the speech on a more serious note, saying that while journalism was going through troubling times, its "success as an industry is essential to our success as a democracy." He called it a season of "renewal and reinvention and that's what journalism is in the process of doing."

“He was so funny,” said CNBC’s Jim Cramer, as he made his way out of the dinner. “And Wanda Sykes! She gave us a ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Wanda. Oh, it was so good.” It was also Ms. Sykes who provided one of the more charged lines of the evening, when she took on Rush Limbaugh, accusing him of “treason” for saying that “he hopes this administration fails.” “I think maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker, but he was just strung out on OxyContin and missed his flight,” she said, to cheers and nervous groans. “Too much?” But then she continued anyway. “Rush Limbaugh. ‘I hope the country fails’? I hope his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs some more waterboarding, that’s what he needs.” Mr. Obama, for his part, offered a series of jokes — spearheaded by David Axelrod and Mr. Obama’s speechwriter Jon Favreau — with bipartisan punch lines.

You know, I had an entire speech prepared for this wonderful occasion, but now that I'm here I think I'm going to try something a little different. Tonight I want to speak from the heart. ""Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded," he said. "You can't just take Air Force One on a joyride to Manhattan -- I don't care whose kids you are."
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/09/obama.correspondents.dinner/
Considering how that little "joyride" scared the daylights out of New Yorkers (and understandable so), those of you who are constantly criticizing GWB's joke about looking for WMDs under the table, "should" find this one equally as tasteless.
I'm an Obama supporter and I found the Air Force One joke tasteless and unfunny.

I did not vote for Obama and would not again, but do support the duly elected President of the United States and I think the joke is funny. Lets keep our sense of humor here and not take everything seriously, It was a mistake, mistakes happen and sadly, some guy got fired cause of a mistake. I was glad to see folks using their head and evacuating. If nothing else, we can look at it like a drill. I don't see it as a "joyride". The event had a legimate purpose.
I guess that entire incident left a sour taste in my mouth, but I also just wasn't very impressed with the over-all level of humor at the dinner. I don't really expect presidents to be gifted comics, although I laughed at a few of Obama's quips. Wanda Sykes - not so much.

I watched max, five minutes of the event. Wanda ??? was talking and I found her very unfunny. She has a right to her humor and thankfully, today at least, I have a right to switch channels. The people at the dinner were a captive audience, for what I consider the hate being expressed by what I perceived as a sad bitter woman.
And yet, in another thread, you said you adored ann coulter? Wow. At least Wanda's act is comedy.....
firsttoserve
05-11-2009, 04:42 PM
Whats the confusion? I do adore the beautiful, brilliant, talented writer Ms Coulter. Never heard or saw Wanda before and with any luck won't again. Five minutes was way to much. My observation is that the the President was uncomfortable with her remarks, too. Lots of funny comedians but she is not one of them, in my opinion.
That's says a lot about you. imo, ann coulter is a mean-spirited foul-mouthed hate-mongerer. Any beauty she has quickly evaporates when she opens her mouth.

What specificaly does it say about me other then I have courage of my convictions and we disagree, which is no surprise. Whats sad? Anne is rich, well educated, beautiful, funny, articulate and writes better then anyone.
And whats the confusion????
The confusion stems from the simple fact that you find Wanda Sykes sad and bitter, and ann coulter the things you do. My confusion is my own. And the sadness the same. What a shame, imo.

I hate to appear stupid, but I just didn't get this one.
“We’ve also begun to change the culture in Washington. We’ve even made the White House a place where people can learn and can grow. Just recently, Larry Summers asked if he could chair the White House Council on Women and Girls. (Laughter.) And I do appreciate that Larry is here tonight because it is seven hours past his bedtime. (Laughter.)”
What did the "past his bedtime" mean? He's not that old - in his 50's. What was with the "Council on Women and Girls?" Everybody laughed, but I didn't get it. Is he saying that Larry Summers wants an easier job?
That being said, I still love me some Barack Obama and thought most of it was hilarious!!!

Oh my, how funny that a rightie start a thread about this. I seem to recall their hero, George W. Bush standing at the podium making jokes about not being able to find the WMD's. And guess what? Not a word from the Bush supporters.
BTW, I see no gufawing going on, he wasn't bent over busting a gut while laughing, as ABC pointed out, he looked quite uncomfortable.
Besides, the joke had more to do with Rush Limbaugh than it did 9/11. But I'm sure you knew that.

Is the next "spin" going to be that he really wasn't listening just like he wasn't listening in Rev. Wright's church? Maybe he had no idea what Wanda was saying?? Maybe he just doesn't understand comedy and doesn't know when the proper time to laugh is? Or if others were laughing, he just took a cue from the crowd?
No, it's probably going to be that this wasn't the Wanda Sykes he always knew.
I think he doesn't have an internal governor of what is distasteful and needs someone to tell him.

I watched the whole clip that showed just Wanda. When she made that joke, she didn't get a very favorable reaction from the crowd. She turned to Mr. Obama and said, "Too much?". You couldn't see him at all but then she says, "I know you're laughing on the inside." I can't swear that it was that particular line but I know it was during the Rush Limbaugh segment that she did. I have to believe that Mr. Obama didn't have a very favorable reaction to the joke.

The joke was on Rush Limbaugh, period, end of story.
But I'll ask you the same thing I asked the thread starter, why did you and the rest of your ilk defend George W. Bush when he joked about the WMD's? Why was that ok? Our soldiers were still being killed by them yet you all told us to get over it, it was a joke.

Laughing or not laughing who the heck cares. It's called comedy it isn't always tidy and nice. And it isn't always politically correct nor should it be.
But do any of you whining about the president laughing at the Limbaugh joke happen to know what was said just prior to that part of Wanda's bit?
Often when it comes to comedy the laughter over laps from one joke to the next.
But since you all have nothing more important to complain about have at it.
I laughed at the joke- could have done without the tie in to 9/11 but the rest of the joke was funny as he&&- loved the Hannity one as well.

I can't help it. It is strange to see how people's values float according to the letter behind the name.
This reminds you of the Reverend Wright incident. The herd tried to act enlightened spouting off about Black Liberation theology and then when Obama changed his tune, they all changed their views. It reminds you of a seesaw.

The clip that I watched was posted on msnbc.
That is the clip I saw as well.
I don't know if the President was laughing or not and I really don't care it was comedy- but you are right she said "too much?" and then the "I know you're laughing on the inside" to the audience. I actually laughed more at that line then the rest of the joke.

Wonder if BO laughed at that one too?
Yes he did, but I wouldn't want to offend the posters who think this topic is silly and just can't stay away from the thread.

The few here trying deny or excuse Obama's behavior by attacking posters, the GOP and even attacking YouTube just highlight the level of insecurity and inexperience Obama is displaying as Commander in Chief.

IMO the Hannity joke was the funniest line of the evening. "I could break him by putting him in the middle seat in coach?" That's just freaken hilarious.
Does anyone else find it odd that we are supposed to laugh when a
RW entertainer says that someone should poison a supreme court justice...but Rush Limbaugh is off limits?

He needs to get his crew (committee) to do what he wants them to do...i.e....not embarrass him with these things that can come back to haunt him. The media and whatever they want to say seem to think it's ok.(JMO). I think they should start checking some of this stuff out with him, if for no other reason than to save him some grief.

Well my take is that the comedian does the jokes, the President doesn't have control over what the comedian says. If that were the case, then why did Stephen Colbert say what he said about the President, and if the President knew then why did there seem to be outrage by the Right?
I'd imagine that President Bush laughed when he probably shouldn't have during Stephen Colbert's performance.
I just don't understand the fake indignation. Coulter can joke about poisoning a Supreme Court Justice, or the death of Police, Firefighters, and other New Yorkers during 9-11.........Rush can have his Barrack the Magic ***** routine.
Trust me I can find more.
Comedy is just that....
I guess the problem I see with the Right and Republican Party at this point is that they are allowing the Comedians to take over the party and the direction of the party and they were never elected to any office......And the Democrats problem is that they have a bunch of Comedians elected in Congress.
Now that's what I call funny. I think I should try to be a political comedian. LOL ;)

"WASHINGTON (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9846NO03&show_article=1) (AP) - The White House is keeping its distance from an entertainer's joke comparing commentator Rush Limbaugh to a terrorist.
Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs on Monday was asked for President Barack Obama's reaction to the joke by comic actress Wanda Sykes at Saturday's White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Obama took part in the event. "
Gibbs should have given Obama a heads up prior to the event, Obama was splitting a gut on the 9-11 jokes.
I saw a clip of her joke on the news and the first thing I noticed after watching more clips of her jokes is that she seemed to only target conservative folks so that led me to believe that she was more of a Liberal comedian and the Correspondance committee who hired her was fully aware of it.. why didn't they choose to also have a non-partisan comedian who would hit both sides? this amazes me and also shows how Liberal the media is.... This is so true. I have never found Wanda to be funny at all. IMO she tries too hard. Comedians who try too hard, just aren't funny. I don't like Robin Williams either.
Although I adore the President, he does not have that gene that distinguishes between appropiate and inappropiate humor. He just doesn't. He needs to really stay AWAY from it. He has so many missteps in the humor dept., that when I see him trying to be funny, I cringe. He needs to stick to his good areas and away from humor.
No joke can be funny about 9/11. I don't even think Hitler jokes are amusing and I'm not old either.
