Obama: No Prayer in the White House

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 6:58 PM

MADISON, Wis. — The White House is planning a muted observance of Thursday's National Day of Prayer, a response that has disappointed both Christian conservatives and an atheist group that wants to end the tradition.

Congress established the day in 1952 and in 1988 set the first Thursday in May as the day for presidents to issue proclamations asking Americans to pray.

faith based initiatives has no place in government, community based initiatives that include businesses that were run by a faith would not be a issue, Obama never should of continued bush's faith based program and look at the people running it, just wrong imo

As a Libertarian, I don't think it's the government's business to encourage me to pray. They're not my parent, or even my friend.

That said, I can see why Obama might not want to abolish the tradition altogether. Religion is a divisive issue, and sometimes you just have to compromise to keep the general peace.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama would issue such a proclamation Thursday but not hold any public events with religious leaders as President George W. Bush did.

And this is wrong how?

Also...Newsmax....rag sheet...!!

only thing is, when we compromise on separation of church and state it doesn't bring peace, never has

I think in this case, tampering with the whole silly day of prayer thing will cause more ill will than just leaving it alone.

Those who think prayer is useful can pray, and those who think it's sily can just point and laugh. Removing it just needlesly fuels the anger of the far right.

I have no interest in feeding the bears over something so silly.

JMO.

I see some are upset that Obama is not continuing traditions started by bush. I agree with above post that there should be separation between church and state.

True, I do believe he goes by the polls... I noticed that the congress (House) still has daily opening prayer so that hasn't changed yet.
