Psychic makes claim to reward money in Cantu case
Sources have said the girl appears to have been murdered in a crawl space underneath the church, where investigators also found a pair of gloves. Sandra, who was last seen around 4 p.m. March 27 on videotape surveillance captured in front of her home, was found 10 days later stuffed into a suitcase that floated to the surface of a retaining pond at a local dairy.

I always found it very interesting how quickly the police honed in on that area right away and this was before they arrested Huckaby. Also one of the reporters overheard one of the FBI agents say "I found it or I got it." (paraphrasing) when they brought the work gloves out of the crawlspace.
So was there a witness that may have seen Huckaby behind the back of the church around this time?
I sure wish I knew.

yeah I heard the reporter say that..so it is very interesting..wonder if there is a bigger space that one FBI girl had to really push herself in there..wonder if she told them to check for gloves in a crawl space..I don't see how MH got her U know what under that church to kill her there..hummm:confused:

police say they never used any information provided by psychics. She thinks she’s entitled to at least a portion of the reward money, totaling more than $30,000. Dani Pedlow, based in Los Angeles, said she predicted the little girl would be found in a “barranca”— a Spanish word for canyon or ravine — and that she was killed in a church, and the killer was someone in the trailer park the little girl called home
One of her clients, lived in the city, and contacted her via email. She told her she saw a “barranca”, which in spanish means canyon or ravine. She spoke of how she saw a church, across from the park, and water, sand and gravel. Although there is no park near the Clover Road Baptist Church, which was searched as part of the investigation, behind it is a large, open grassy field.
Sources have said the girl appears to have been murdered in a crawl space underneath the church, where investigators also found a pair of gloves.
Scott Webb, executive director of the Modesto-based Sund/Carrington Foundation, said it is paying a little more than $20,000 to the anonymous tipster who found the suitcase April 6 just off of Whitehall Road north of Tracy. Webb said the organization has never paid any psychic reward money in the more than 40 cases it has helped solve.
Tracy police has identified an individual who was responsible for (Sandra’s) recovery.

For the most part, I agree with you. But I do know of cases where PD has used a psychic with success. Here's a link to a synopsis of one of those cases (start at page 189). This particular detective consulted this psychic on other cases throughout the years.

The man who found Sandra
Thousands of volunteers, Tracy police officers and FBI agents searched around the clock earlier this month for Sandra Cantu.
But it was a dairy farmworker just going about his job who led to the discovery of the 8-year-old girl’s body.
Jose Luis Franco, 40, found a suitcase in a dairy lagoon on April 6 containing what was later found to be Sandra’s body and alerted the police. Later this month, the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation will reward him with a little more than $20,000 for his discovery, according to Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman.
Franco, who speaks only Spanish, said Friday night through translator Laura Flores that the reward is “like a blessing.”
Franco said he was nervous when he first found the suitcase, but after police and FBI told him he wasn’t going to be held responsible for anything, he was able to relax.
The Francos moved to Tracy in 1991 from Jalisco, Mexico, where Jose was born. Before he worked for Bacchetti & Silva, he worked for a farm in Mountain House.
While Franco will receive the reward money, a few psychics have come forward recently, saying they felt the money should be theirs.
Sheneman said that the money will go only to Franco.
“We did not review or utilize any tips or information provided to us by psychics,” he said.

VALLEJO — A kidnapping survivor from Vallejo who recently put her heart into searching for Tracy's Sandra Cantu hasn't had an easy time since learning of the 8-year-old's death.
Midsi Sanchez, 16, was hospitalized Friday with serious injuries — including a broken neck and punctured lung — after a 2 a.m. rollover crash that police said likely involved alcohol. She was also in a minor crash in Tracy two weeks ago.
"She could feel me when I touched her toes, and she was able to wiggle her fingers and toes," though she was being kept as stationary as possible, Simmons said, speaking by phone from Walnut Creek's John Muir Medical Center, where she's been keeping a vigil for Sanchez.
Sanchez was already recovering from a minor traffic accident in Tracy two weeks ago in which she suffered a leg injury, said her father, Juan Carlos Sanchez.
"She's coherent, but she's in shock," Simmons said. "The first thing she did when she woke up was ask about the other girls. And she said she was in a lot of pain."

I have opinions on psychics. For the most part, I think the majority of them are full of BS.
But there is also a part of me that believes that a very few may actually have a gift. The problem LE has is weeding through all the BS.
I am fascinated with the reports from LE where a psychic has actually lead to information to solve a case.
As for this latest psychic trying to cash in.....My advice is to GET A JOB!

I wonder if they even read her tip? Or, did her tip even come in before they were already looking @ the church? And, a runoff pond isn't exactly a canyon or ravine. I was thinking the reward was for finding Sandra, not exactly guessing where the murder occured. As far as the perp being someone in the trailer park, there were hundreds (maybe even thousands) people who felt it was someone in the park. So, I don't see where she would be due the reward. Seems the reward would go to the farm worker who found the suitcase. But, that is JMO.

I think it is really sad when this sort of tragedy happens, let alone all the money grabbers out there that want to cash in on the horrible death of a person.
I believe this farmer deserves the money. He did not do this for fame or anything like that. He called the police and let them take it from there.
I feel so bad for Sandra's family and all they are going through right now. May they feel the Lord's loving arms around them as they try to deal with this horrible tragedy and the loss of their little girl.
ITA grammybear, I fear the worst is yet to come for Sandra family. The horror of her death is more than enough, but yet human nature wants details. I hate to imagine the pain they will endure hearing every minute detail of what killed their little girl at trial. These money grubber scum that come out of the wood work make me ill. Is this the reality of our life and times to make money off of a gruesome death, start a foundation? The Farmer/worker certainly deserves the reward.
I thought I read they had not wanted it in the beginning. Chatter was perhaps they were illeagals, but I am glad to see it going to those rightly deserved, IMO

TY. It really bothers me with the morbid curiousity that comes out in people when a tragedy happens. I have to wonder why people would need to spread vicious stories about the man who found the suit case. It is like they need to make him look as bad as possible, as if they are jealous that this poor man is getting something that others won't get. I will never understand how some people think.
My prayers go out to Sandra's family. There is so much more they are going to have to face as the trial gets closer. I just hope that the defense attorny does not keep going for delays like we see in so many cases. This poor family needs the closure and justice for Sandra.
It seems that the rumors start about anyone that is even remotely connected to a "high profile" case. If it hits the national news more than once, it seems a lot of people feel they need to climb on the band wagon to get their name in the news. Or jump on a message board to make bad guesses about people like this man from the dairy. Personally I was sure in my mind that the fellow working for the dairy was not an illegal like some were proposing. Dairy hands aren't usually "migrant" type workers. They get a job on a dairy and stay there for years.
Those like this fellow who actually found the suitcase and called police or like Mr. Kronk who found Caylee Anthony become targets for anyone who wishes they had been there to find the "lost" person... I was very happy to read in the news this morning about the reward going to the fellow who found the suitcase and Sandra. And I'm very glad that the cops are essentially ignoring the so-called psychics who are trying to get a "piece of the action".
My heart goes out to Sandra's family as well, grammy... The same for her friends and the neighbors there in Tracy who honesty cared about this little girl.
ETA: To StickyBeak... I read that the finders of the suitcase had originally refused the reward as well. In the article I read this morning, it said that Franco (the man who is receiving the reward) was very nervous initially about accepting the reward but after police and FBI told him he wasn’t going to be held responsible for anything, he was able to relax. I'm glad the police and FBI talked to him and calmed him down. The reward will be wonderful for his children's education.

Anakerie,
I so agree with your sentiments. Nowadays even those that do the right and just thing are heckled, harassed, belittled and falsely accused.
It really takes a lot of courage in our society today to even come forward, to stand up and do the right thing. So many that do then become the targets. I remember how the cable news sites and message boards chewed Mr. Kronk up one side and down the other. It then suddenly became all about him and that he could be the possible murderer of Caylee. Instantly it seemed some forgot the decomp smell in Casey's car and Casey never reporting her precious child missing.
What should happen imo, is we should thank the people profusely that do extraordinary things especially those that have found victims that have been missing. Thank goodness for Mr. Kronk, Franco and others like them.
I don't think Franco is an illegal but if he is, then it shows he put that aside and did the right thing and reported finding the suitcase with little Sandra inside.
I agree with you, I think Franco is most likely a migrant worker. The FBI and the Tracy PD sure felt like he was worthy of the award and I totally agree.
If he reads or watches any of the news lately then I can see how he was worried that because he found Sandra they may try to blame him for her death.

TRACY — While her granddaughter is jailed on murder charges, Connie Lawless is staying strong in her Baptist faith and stands firmly by the character of her church and family.
The Lawless family and the Clover Road Baptist Church in Tracy have faced dark times during the investigation into the kidnapping, rape and slaying of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu — from news reports that the girl was killed at the church to suspicions cast on pastor Lane Lawless and the April 10 arrest of his granddaughter, Melissa Huckaby.
Connie Lawless, in a telephone interview, denied all accusations.
"There is no pattern of anything like that," she said. "There has never been a hint of any kind of scandal," she said. "We are open people. Our church is open and friendly and lively. We don't have anything to hide."
While Connie and Lane Lawless are in Southern California with family and friends, their tiny, close-knit congregation gathered in the sparsely decorated church Wednesday night for regular midweek services. As the murder investigation continues to singe the airwaves and keep the church and Tracy in the national media's attention, worshipers sang hymns of finding strength in life's trials — the members' booming voices filling the modest building.
Connie Lawless' brother, the Rev. DeWayne Harris, came from Salinas to give a spirited sermon on how Baptists struggle to preserve the truth and how the national media spotlight has rocked their little church.
He spoke harshly of what he called false media reports on the case, and he said he felt sorry for the likes of news commentators Nancy Grace and Dan Rather.
Recent news reports have linked Lane Lawless to an FBI investigation into old child abuse claims at a church in rural Washington. The pastor's wife maintains that he has only led California congregations. He's been at Clover Road, established in 1955, since the early 80s.
"Lane is the last person on the Earth that you would ever suspect of abusing anyone," she says, describing him as trustworthy, hardworking and strong.
Church member Cynthia Browning of Manteca, Connie's Lawless' sister, said the absence of Huckaby and her daughter, who is with family in Southern California, have been noticeable. The church prayed for her during the service.

I think the Lawless grandparents have been victimized by their notorious despicable granddaughter.
From what I read when the FBI went to the other church they were focusing on another Pastor, iirc in the media article, his name was Dale Johnson, who did not live in that town any longer and had moved away suddenly.
I feel very sorry for these elderly people who are now in their 70s having to deal with all of this shame that Huckaby has brought against not only them but the church that Pastor Lawless had pastored for 30 years.
I can fully understand them being true to their faith and it is that faith that will get them through this.
Elderly people tend to want to see only the goodness in people. I am sure it is even unimaginable to them to even consider that Melissa could have done these monstrous acts.

I decided to reserve any comments about the family till more comes out by a credible source backed up by evidence or in the court. I'm just glad to know Madison is with her grandparents in So. They didn't ask for any of this and I'm sure had they stayed in Tracy the media would of been relentless and just easier for all those involved emotionally. JMHO

I had not realized it either... apparently according to the article I linked, Madison and her Great Grandparents all went to So. CA.
The Wednesday night services last week were done by Connie Lawless' brother, the Rev. DeWayne Harris. Not sure if he is going to continue to do them... he is a minister in Salinas.

TRACY, Calif. (AP) - A dairy worker who found the suitcase containing the body of a missing 8-year-old girl in Tracy will get a reward for his discovery.
Jose Luis Franco was working at a dairy north of Tracy on April 8 when he noticed the luggage in an irrigation pond.
Inside authorities found the body of Sandra Cantu, who had been missing since March 27. Her disappearance from a nearby mobile home park has sparked a massive search by hundreds of volunteers.
On Thursday, Franco will get a check for just over $20,000 from the Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation at a ceremony in Tracy. The organization rewards tips that help find missing persons or lead to the arrest of violent criminals.
Franco says he'll set the money aside for the education of his four children.

Bad Memories Haunt Mother, Friend Says
From the article:
The police checkpoint is gone from the front of Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park where candles, flowers and and stuffed animals sat in memoriam for 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.
According to a friend of Maria Chavez, Cantu's mother, KCRA 3 has learned that Chavez wants to move away from the mobile home park because memories of her daughter and the events that took place at the park are too much to bear.
I think if I were one of the family of that beautiful little girl, I'd have a hard time living in that mobile home park too. Especially with the family of the accused murderer living just 5 doors away. It must be pure he11 for Sandra's family to walk out their door and be able to see the Huckaby/Lawless home. I hope the family can find a place to live that won't have the constant reminders...

Something seems fish about that article. Why would Danny Cantu be stating that he didn't kill his daughter, and would take a lie detector test to prove it????? The only suspect is in custody, and has been for over a month.
On another note... KCRA just stated that they would be talking about what else police found in the search of Clover Road Baptist Church on the 6pm broadcast. If it's anything worth mentioning, I'll post about it.
Ok... it wasn't the church... it was what they found in the Orchard Estates Mobilehome Park.
They found child pornography in one or more of the mobilehome(s) that were searched while they were looking for Sandra, as per a source close to the investigation.

Well we remember whose houses were "visited" by LE more than once....
These people are sick! We'd better see charges filed....
Considering this came from an unnamed source, I think I'd like to wait and see the evidence and see if any charges are ever filed.
As to the "child pornography"...I still remember a local case that occurred where a Wal Mart film developer called the police because he had developed three rolls of film with several shots of naked 2-year olds on them. When the person came to collect the film, the police swarmed them and arrested them. Turned out the "offender" was the childrens 75 year old grandmother. She had snapped some photos of the twin grandchildren while they were taking a bath. That was a huge deal. FBI, local police and the news media all called in. The news media was at the local police station waiting for someone to make an announcement about the big "sex crime" arrest. Some officer had already called them and tipped them off. So finally a spokesperson had to come out and admit that the big "porn ring" actually was a 75 year old grandmother and the photos in question were of her grandchildren.
So if the "child pornography" turns out to be a couple of family photos that were overreacted to by officers who were desperately trying to find a suspect at the time of Sandra's disappearance, I wouldn't be terribly surprised.

Three new charges against Huckaby
Tracy woman accused of poisoning two, including a 7-year-old girl
Huckaby, 28, is expected to appear in San Joaquin County Superior Court today for further arraignment
The complaint charges Huckaby with poisoning the 7-year-old girl, identified only as Jane M. Doe, on Jan. 17, the same day a woman in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park - where both Sandra and Huckaby lived - reported to Tracy police that Huckaby returned her daughter drugged with a muscle relaxant.
In the second poisoning charge, Huckaby allegedly drugged a man identified as Daniel Plowman on March 2 - 21/2 months after the first alleged poisoning and 25 days before Sandra was reported missing.

Agreed.
So far, the evidence presented doesn't include a lot of sexual assault testimonials from her past against her...but she's got quite a few statements from her past that show she may be a seriously dangerous individual. Maybe not a sexual predator per se, but certainly someone who, at a minimum, has disregard about whether her actions harm others.

Huckaby was also charged with drugging a man identified as Daniel Plowman on March 2 by mixing a substance in his food or drink. The substance was not identified.
Attorneys in the case declined to comment, citing a court-imposed gag order.
Plowman is a former friend of Huckaby's, and the two attended the Clover Road Baptist Church run by Huckaby's grandfather, Lane Lawless, friends said. Some said she and Plowman had dated and then had a falling-out.

Disturbing evidence found on computer of alleged killer of Sandra Cantu
Investigators have found disturbing information on the computer of Melissa Huckaby, the Sunday school teacher accused of the abduction, rape, and murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.
According to authorities, Huckaby’s hard drive contained multiple Internet searches about a murdered child in Israel.
The child, 4-year-old Rose Pisam disappeared about a year ago and was missing for months. Later, the girl’s grandfather was arrested and confessed to stuffing Rose’s body in a suitcase, which he dumped in a local river.
The similarities between the Sandra Cantu murder and the Rose Pisam case are startling:
Huckaby lived with her grandparents in the same mobile home park as the Cantu family—Rose’s mother, Marie Pisam, 23, was living with Ronnie Ron, 45, the girl’s grandfather.
Huckaby’s grandfather was the pastor at a church in Washington State during the 1980s where allegations of abuse were raised—Rose’s grandfather and mother were in a romantic relationship (Rose’s mother was married to Ron’s son Benjamin at the time).
Sandra’s body was found inside a suitcase in a drained irrigation ditch—Rose’s body was stuffed inside a suitcase placed in a river.

Well this is really odd and a little confusing, I read it a couple of times and maybe I am not reading it right but Rose's grandfather and Mother were in a romantic relationship-----Together??? Marie was married to Ron's son, Marie is the girl's Mother (Rose) and Ron is Rose's grandfather but Marie was married to his son. Te totally confused on this wording. But it is all very strange especially that is was searched on MH computer.

TY for the link, see I as I said before I think they are allowed to drag the hearings and trial out too long. Gives it too much time to
take it out of the public's attention.

The prosecutors want a plea from Huckabee at the hearing this Friday...
Prosecutor wants Huckaby to enter plea in Cantu case
http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_12555086 The prosecutor in the Sandra Cantu murder case says he wants defendant Melissa Huckaby to enter a plea Friday when she returns to court — or else he will ask a San Joaquin County Superior Court judge to do it for her.
DA files motion to get Huckaby case moving
http://www.recordnet.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090609/A_NEWS/90609010A prosecutor on Friday will ask a judge overseeing the case of Tracy’s Melissa Huckaby to push it forward on grounds two of the alleged victims were children, including the slain 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.
San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Thomas Testa filed court papers today asking Superior Court Judge Linda Lofthus to enter a plea of not guilty for Huckaby, 28, if her attorney doesn’t. Testa also requests that Lofthus set a preliminary hearing date.

Good. Seems the defense lawyer is working on the delay, delay, delay defense. Good grief, most lawyers @ least enter a plea THEN start the delaying processes.
Thanks for the update.

Glad to see Testa is going to stop the defense spinning their wheels indefinitely.
Prosecutors of a Tracy murder case will on Friday ask a judge to move it forward because two victims are children.
All criminal actions in which … a minor … is the victim … shall be given precedence over all other criminal actions in the order of trial,” Testa says, quoting a statute that typically applies to cases involving elderly or very young witnesses

John Schick, a Stockton attorney and law professor at Humphreys College Laurence Drivon School of Law, said he wasn't surprised by Testa's motion putting the defense on guard at a point when criminal cases often languish.
"He's given them time to sit back and digest what he's given them," Schick said. "Now he's saying he's the captain of this ship, and he's steering."
Testa's motion also indicates that - at least for now - he intends to put Huckaby through a preliminary hearing rather than a grand jury proceeding.
Grand jury hearings are held in secret and without a defense attorney or defendant present to argue.
A preliminary hearing, by contrast, is held in open court with the defense, and a judge decides if there is enough evidence to hold the defendant over for a jury trial.
Huckaby's charges make her eligible for the death penalty if she is convicted, but the District Attorney's Office has yet to announce what penalty it will seek in an eventual trial. Prosecutors typically wait until after a preliminary hearing or grand jury indictment to announce that.
Schick said Testa's motion filed Tuesday is telling.
"That would suggest to me that they've had a discussion on the penalty," Schick said. "And they've probably reached a tentative conclusion."

Guess we will know more on Friday when she appears in court. Her appearance is scheduled for 1:20 PST so will be later in the afternoon more than likely before we hear anything. I would be surprised if they don't plea tomorrow.. But then again... the one defendent in the other Tracy case, the teen that was tortured Michael Schumacher was jailed on Dec. 2 and he still hasn't entered a plea.. that involved a child also...

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — The Sunday school teacher accused of murdering an 8-year-old Northern California girl is due back in court, and prosecutors want her to enter a plea.
Twenty-eight-year-old Melissa Huckaby is scheduled to make her fourth court appearance Friday. She's charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the death of Sandra Cantu.
Huckaby's arrest in April came days after the girl's body was found in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond.
San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Thomas Testa asked a judge earlier this week to enter a plea on Huckaby's behalf, if she's not willing to enter one herself.
Huckaby's lawyer has repeatedly requested more time to review evidence in the case.
Huckaby could face the death penalty if convicted."

I can't say I'm surprised... if she was going to be accountable for her actions or accept any kind of plea deal, it would have been done already.

A Sept. 24th preliminary hearing date was set in the case.
Behar also told San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Linda Lofthus that Huckaby has been following the developments in the case via Google alerts of news stories published on the case. So far she has gotten 500 such alerts.

Once again, the news is incomplete and basically wrong. No homework makes sloppy reporting for sure. Apparently Melissa doesn't get Google alerts.

No she does not have computer access... it was Judge Loftus that had been compiling google alerts on this case..
At the arraignment, Lofthus told the attorneys she had been compiling a list of all news stories related to the Huckaby case and would give them each a hard copy of the 500 Google Alerts she collected. She said she learned that like a jury, a judge isn’t allowed to read stories in the media about a pending case.
“I won’t be looking at them anymore,” she said.
Preliminary hearing will begin on Sept. 24th and we should learn more at that time.
http://tracypress.com/pages/full_story?article-Huckaby%20pleads%20not%20guilty%20=&page_label=home&id=2715934-Huckaby+pleads+not+guilty&widget=push&instance=home_news_bullets&open=&
Lofthus set the preliminary hearing date for Sept. 24.
Huckaby’s plea came after prosecutors asked Lofthus to move the case along and pressure Huckaby’s lawyer to enter a plea rather than be granted more time to review evidence. Today, Huckaby said “yes” when Lofthus asked if she agreed to waive that right and to have the preliminary hearing held on Thursdays and Fridays for three consecutive weeks, beginning in late September.
As stated above the preliminary hearing will be held starting Sept. 24th on Thursday and Friday for three consecutive weeks. Never heard of that before.. maybe it has to do with California's wonderful budget situation..
