Tracy Police Department is searching for an eight year old girl who went missing on Friday afternoon. The FBI have been called to help in the investigation and search.

Sandra Cantu left a friend's house at a mobile home park but never returned home on Friday. Police say she has been missing since 4 p.m. Police are searched the mobile home park with dogs and by helicopter with no luck. They have also contacted all of Cantu's friends and no one has seen her. They continue to search the area.

The Tracy Police Department has set up a mobile command post on West Clover Road as a helicopter searches the area for an 8-year-old girl who has been missing since Friday afternoon.

Sandra Cantu was last seen at 4 p.m. Friday, and the official search began at 8:15 p.m., police said. She was supposed to be at a friend's house in the Orchard Estates mobile home park, where she lives, but she wasn't found there.

Police have searched all night. The FBI, California Highway Patrol, San Joaquin Sheriff's Office, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, Tracy Volunteers in Police Services, Tracy Community Emergency Response Team, Tracy Fire Department and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are helping in the investigation.

Sandra is described as 4 feet tall and 85 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a pink Hello Kitty T-shirt and black leggings.

Sandra Cantu, a second grader from Jacobsen Elementary, was last seen around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon after leaving her neighbor's house in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park.

“We saw her yesterday at our house,” said neighbor Nahum Diaz. “She was playing with my 5-year-old sister. Then she left, she told her she had to go do her homework, and I didn't see her anymore.”


Apparently she was there at the neighbors and left to go home.. but never made it there...

Hopefully they find her safe and unharmed.

More details here. A video camera mounted on Sandra Cantu's mobile home filmed the girl running down the street to play and also she apparently told one of her friends she was running away.

One of those volunteers was Rebecca Hullar, whose daughter was one of the last people to see Sandra before her disappearance. Hullar's daughter told her Sandra said she was going to run away, which she wanted to believe, but didn't.

Parents of Missing Tracy Girl Questioned
March 30, 2009

TRACY - The mother of missing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu was at the police department Sunday, where investigators questioned her for several hours. She was just too distraught to speak with detectives the day before, Sgt. Tony Sheneman said.

The girl's father also spoke with police on Sunday, after driving up from Southern California the night before. When asked if he is considered a person of interest, Sheneman said investigators are questioning a number of people, but have not focused on one person.

Investigators aren't taking any chances, especially with the case of Jessica Lunsford in mind.

This business about the 4 residences being searched, two cars impounded, men's hair dye and evidence of long hair having been cut, and possible connections among parties, sounds awful. On the one hand if this hair thing is correct and is related, it could point to Sandra at least still being alive, on the other...I don't want to think of the possibilities regarding some sort of child exploitation ring.
Regardless, I don't think the outcome looks very good..whether it was one individual SO who snatched her, or more than one.
Praying this child is found alive quickly.

More than 600 tips received in search for girl

Tracy police say they've received more than 600 tips since Sandra was first reported missing last Friday.

More reward money is being offered as well, with the reward offered by Tracy Crime Stoppers and the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation for the girl's safe return now more than $22,000.

Meanwhile, police say they will send a T-shirt recovered in a waste facility out for further testing.

Searchers had thought the pink shirt was the one Sandra was wearing when she disappeared, but her mother says it's not the same T-shirt.

Crews are expected to continue searching trash in the waste facility through Saturday.

TRACY — Organizers are expecting an army of volunteers to show up Saturday morning to help find a Tracy girl who's been missing for more than a week.
More than 150 people, led by the Contra Costa County Search and Rescue team, are expected to search yet-to-be disclosed locations in and around Tracy this weekend while volunteers continue to wallpaper the area with fliers featuring pictures of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

Earlier today, Tracy Police served another warrant on a residence in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park where Cantu was last seen.

Yesterday a SW warrant served in Oakdale:

The FBI served a search warrant on Thursday at a home in the Central Valley city of Oakdale. The home belongs to a relative of one of Cantu's neighbors, Chris Sinclair. Authorities have already seized three vehicles connected to Sinclair.

Another home searched; man talks to police

A 44-year-old mobile home resident agreed to go with police while they searched his home today.

Debra and David Slayter attended a candlelight vigil earlier this week at the mobile home park. Glenn Moore/Tracy Press Police this afternoon drove off with David Slayter, 44, after searching his home at space No. 43 in the mobile home park where an 8-year-old Tracy girl went missing exactly a week ago.

FBI agents and Tracy detectives pulled items from Slayter's home in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park and packed them into a white crime-scene truck. A caravan of at least seven trucks and detectives’ cars pulled into the neighborhood shortly before 2 p.m. today.

FBI Evidence Response Team members arrive at the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park as a search warrant is served for one of the residents homes. Glenn Moore/Tracy PressSlayter voluntarily got in a police about 15 minutes after investigators arrived, said Tracy police spokesman Lt. Jeremy Watney, but police declined to disclose where they went to talk.

Slayter was identified through a newspaper photograph that shows him and his wife, Debra, in front of their home, and another photo of the couple at a candlelight vigil.

Slayter’s name also comes up in an Internet search with an inactive Web site called www.moneymansvault.com, which indicates he lives at 812 W. Clover Road, No. 43, in Tracy.

What terrible news to see that Sandra was murdered, we still all had hope that she would be found alive and could be returned to her loving family.
We will always remember seeing Sandra, in that video, skipping along, looking happy on the day that she disappeared. How could someone called a "human being", have harmed this beautiful little girl!

TRACY, Calif. --Hours after FBI crime scene investigators entered Clover Road Baptist Church, they left the building Tuesday evening with more than half a dozen bags of evidence in connection to Sandra Cantu's death. Huckaby was raised in Orange County and graduated from Brea-Olinda High School in 1999. She moved to Tracy seven or eight months ago to help her grandparents, then decided to stay and enroll her daughter in kindergarten, family members said.

Her father said Huckaby's only known emotional issues stem from a divorce.

Just days before her arrest, Huckaby was released from the hospital. Relatives said she suffers from ulcers.

Huckaby also has had criminal problems in recent years. She pleaded no contest earlier this year to a count of theft and was scheduled to be sentenced on that charge this Friday. In addition, the Los Angeles Times reported, she was convicted of felony property theft in Los Angeles County in November 2006.

The Times also found court records that show Huckaby, under her maiden name, Melissa Chantel Lawless, had filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003.

John Hughes Jr. of Whittier, Huckaby's uncle, said she'd been enduring a rough patch lately, often struggling to find and hold jobs, partly owing to the challenges of single motherhood.

According to media reports, MH says she found a note the day after her states her suitcase was stolen from the driveway the same day that Sandra was reported missing.

Media reports say that Melissa said the note (more than one media source of the one I posted above) stated Cantu, Water, Suitcase...two street names and the word "whitehall".

It is not known if she reported this find to the LE and if so what time frame she did it in. It is not known who she told other than media in interviews.

She was a loving mother to her ailing child, she taught Bible study at her grandfather's church, and her 5-year-old daughter played a lot with 8-year-old Sandra Cantu and other kids on the block.

Huckaby lives with her grandparents because she suffers from severe allergies and wanted relatives' help to be able to have more time "to take better care of her daughter, who is super-thin and gets sick a lot," Browning said. She was named "class mother" of her daughter's preschool, friends said

Along the way, however, Huckaby has had legal problems.

She was convicted in 2006 in Los Angeles County of property theft, and was due in court Friday to be sentenced for a local January felony burglary conviction, according to court records. In 2002, the Sutter Tracy Community Hospital won a $10,000 civil judgment against her for owed bills; she declared bankruptcy the next year.

"She is a good churchgoing girl, but she has had her challenges," said her great-aunt.

Huckaby's family expressed disbelief at the latest accusations. Her grandmother told KTVU she was home on March 27, the day Sandra Cantu disappeared.
Connie lawless said Melissa left the mobile home park for about an hour that Friday afternoon, telling her grandmother that she was going over to the church about a block and a half away to decorate a room.
Police searched the church twice last week.
Connie Lawless says when Melissa returned home, she did not appear any different than when she left.

Also: Late Monday, police also confirmed that Huckaby had gone on a date with a man who also lives at the mobile home park. Police have searched that man's home and towed three vehicles linked to him.

STOCKTON – A San Joaquin County deputy district attorney who has put two murderers on California’s death row said today he’ll prosecute Melissa Huckaby, a Tracy woman suspected of killing 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

Prosecutor Thomas Testa said that in Tuesday’s court hearing – Huckaby’s first in this case since her Friday arrest – he will make a motion for the judge to issue a gag order.

But in November 2008, Melissa was in court again on a charge of petty theft from a Target store. She pleaded no contest to two counts of petty theft, one of the counts filed because of her prior case in Southern California.

According to San Joaquin County Superior Court records, she was evaluated by the San Joaquin County Mental Health clinic and found competent to stand trial, but she was told that if she completed a one-year treatment program under Proposition 63, the 2004 Mental Health Services Act, she would be allowed to withdraw her plea.

Polk went straight to the emergency room at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. Hours passed, and at about 10 p.m. that night police showed up again. They started peppering Polk with questions and told her that the doctors had found muscle relaxers in her little girl’s body.

Police asked for permission to search Polk’s house.

“Of course, I let them,” said Polk, who lives with her grandparents in Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, where Sandra lived before she was murdered and where Huckaby lived with her grandparents before her arrest.

Child Protective Services then took Polk’s girl to the Mary Graham Children’s Shelter in French Camp, where they kept her overnight. Polk said she walked home from the hospital by herself at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 18.

"He knocked on the door ... I don't know how many times," remembered Wanda. "Eventually she came to the door. She just came to the door looking as if 'What?'"

TRACY, Calif.) - Police in Tracy, California, a city of 80,000 just east of San Francisco, are searching for an 8 year-old child, Sandra Cantu, who disappeared March 27th.

Now, according to the Tracy Press, investigators in the case say they are looking at 60 individuals in the Tracy area who have been identified trafficking in child pornography, along with 78 "registered" sex offenders.

It is believed to be the first time in the U.S. that police have publicly acknowledged the huge population of known but not arrested child pornography suspects in a missing child case.

While visiting the homes of "registered" sex offenders is common in missing children cases, the public is mostly unaware that U.S. law enforcement has also identified hundreds of thousands of criminals trafficking in child pornography.

He is the grandfather of 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby. She is charged with raping and kidnapping 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

Lawless is also the pastor of the Baptist church in California where Huckaby taught Sunday school.

Sources say Lawless was questioned years ago about alleged child abuse at the Lewiston church.

There is little information out about Lawless’ connection with the Idaho church. Authorities in Lewiston say they do not have a criminal investigation open on Lawless.

As horrifying as the murder of an 8-year-old is, the truly unimaginable aspect of the Melissa Huckaby case, for most people, is her alleged use of a foreign object to rape Sandra Cantu. How could a woman, a mom (!), do this to a little girl? How . . . why . . . with what kind of an object? It's unfathomable, hard to think about, dark, evil. The only "safe" conclusion is that the woman must be insane. In fact, along with other experts, I doubt if Huckaby is insane. And as I know both from personal experience and from working with many abused women, rape with a foreign object is not as unusual as one would like to think.

The complaint charges Huckaby with poisoning the 7-year-old girl, identified only as Jane M. Tracy Police Department is searching for an eight year old girl who went missing on Friday afternoon. The FBI have been called to help in the investigation and search.

Sandra Cantu left a friend's house at a mobile home park but never returned home on Friday. Police say she has been missing since 4 p.m. Police are searched the mobile home park with dogs and by helicopter with no luck. They have also contacted all of Cantu's friends and no one has seen her. They continue to search the area.

There is a new tribute to honor Sandra Cantu, the 8-year-old girl who was kidnapped and murdered earlier this year in Tracy.

City leaders and Sandra's family planted a tree in her name today.

The little girl's favorite color was pink, so a pink Crepe Myrtle was chosen. A plaque beneath the tree reads "In Remembrance of Sandra Cantu".

STOCKTON – A secret grand jury began meeting today to hear evidence in the case of Tracy’s Melissa Huckaby, the Sunday school teacher accused in the kidnapping, rape and murder of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu.

The hearing is scheduled to last two weeks. In the end, the grand jury will decide if Huckaby, 28, should stand trial on the charges in open court.

STOCKTON, CA - The woman charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of a Tracy girl last March was indicted in San Joaquin County Superior Court Monday.

Melissa Huckaby, 28, is accused of killing of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu. The girl's body was found in a suitcase in a Tracy drainage pond 10 days after she was reported missing March 27.

The San Joaquin County grand jury indicted Huckaby on five counts: murder with the allegation of kidnapping; sex with a child 10 years old or younger; child abuse and endangerment; furnishing a harmful substance to a child; and furnishing a harmful substance to an adult.

The murder indictment carries two special circumstances: lewd and lascivious acts on a child, and rape by instrument.

The harmful substance indictments stem from charges prosecutors filed in May alleging Huckaby tried to poison a 7-year-old girl and a 37-year-old man. The girl recovered. The man has not been found.

Huckaby, who had visible marks on her forehead in court Monday, began crying when the indictment was read. A prosecutor indicated Huckaby had made the marks herself Monday morning.

If guilty I think the death penalty is fitting, but CA is so slow to actually move anyone from death row into the actual death chamber and they spend so much money on appeals and so on.
Why not let her rot in prison with LWOP in general population? I don't think it would cost anymore than executing her. She can advertise on one of those penpal sites where every lady is looking for "someone who can help me with my legal situation."
