The questions came one after another as First Lady Michelle Obama sat with a group of nine teenagers on Tuesday who were participating in an after-school program at a health clinic that serves a struggling immigrant community here. But it was the last question that really got her talking. “Why did you want to come out and meet us?” the student asked.

Mrs. Obama, who was photographed wearing a sleek and sleeveless magenta silk dress designed by Jason Wu, is the second first lady to appear on the cover. Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose photo was splashed on the cover in December 1998, was the first. “Vogue has a tradition of photographing the first lady,’’ said Patrick O’Connell, director of communications for Vogue. The tradition began with Lou Hoover, wife of President Herbert Hoover, Mr. O’Connell said. The magazine has published photographs of all of the first ladies with the exception of Bess Truman, the wife of President Harry S. Truman. (All of them – aside from Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Clinton – appeared inside the magazine.)

Seated in Michelle Obama’s box on Tuesday night were living symbols of the ideas in President Obama’s first speech to a joint session of Congress, including a bank executive, Leonard Abess, who shared a vast fortune with his employees, and an eighth-grade student from South Carolina, Ty’Sheoma Bethea, who in a letter had urged Congress not to neglect education financing. Mr. Obama used a line in Ty’Sheoma’s letter, “We are not quitters,” as one of his closing themes.
Mr. Abess split $60 million among several hundred current and former workers at his bank. Other guests sitting with Mrs. Obama included Lilly M. Ledbetter, whose Supreme Court case resulted in Congressional action to prevent wage discrimination, and Jonathon N. James, an Army veteran who was wounded in Afghanistan.

Not sure if anything has changed since this article regarding the law:

Frank Q. Nebeker, director of the Office of Government Ethics, which oversees the ethics law, noted that in 1982 the White House and his office agreed that clothes and jewelry borrowed by Mrs. Reagan did not fall under the gift provisions of the law and did not have to be reported.

The White House has released the official portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama. It was taken in the Blue Room of the White House. Obama wears a sleeveless dress, which has become something of a signature style.

Mrs. Obama has become known for the unusual care she takes in dressing, in both designer clothing and off the rack styles; she was enthusiastically welcomed by many designers as a new icon for American fashion. "The First Lady the world's been waiting for," blazed the March cover of Vogue, where Mrs. Obama appears in a fuchsia dress by Jason Wu, the young talent she helped turn into an overnight star. No First Lady since Jacqueline Kennedy has had a more instantaneous impact on fashion. Whatever Mrs. Obama wears, people notice and very often buy.

Last summer, The New Yorker magazine set off a firestorm of controversy when it published a controversial cover image depicting Michelle Obama as part of a clandestine terrorist cell in the White House. The magazine said it was satire meant to reflect the caricature of Mrs. Obama presented by her critics in the media. That was then.
In the latest cover illustration, Mrs. Obama is depicted in three colorful runway poses suitable for New York's fashion week.

Hillary Clinton gets personal on life, love, and foreign policy - in Turkey. Appearing Saturday on a Turkish talk show similar to "The View," the Secretary of State turned on her global charm offensive. During her interview in Ankara, an audience member questioned the Secretary of State about the first time she fell in love. "It was so long ago, with my husband," she told the audience composed of mostly young people. "We've been enjoying our life together ever since." Clinton weighed in on life outside politics, saying the best moments are those where she can simply be herself.

And as in most female-hosted talk shows, the women talked fashion. "I think Michelle Obama looks fabulous," Clinton said, but admitted she never had a talent for style. "I tell my daughter the fashion gene skipped a generation."

Even as Barack Obama tackles the recession and Michelle Obama embraces the role of first lady, the Obamas are finding their footing as parents in the White House. They strive, and even struggle at times, to balance the intense public interest in their family with their desire to preserve a sense of normalcy and privacy in the lives of their daughters, according to relatives, friends and television and magazine interviews with the Obamas themselves. Barack Obama is a modern-day dad who leaves the Oval Office for dinner with his girls, rarely misses a parent-teacher conference or piano recital and prides himself on having read all seven books in the Harry Potter series aloud with Malia. Michelle Obama juggles play dates and homework with speeches to federal agencies and students. Both are committed to keeping their daughters grounded, their friends and aides say. "Those are some special girls, and everyone is rooting for them to make it through this intact," Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama's brother, said in an interview.

In her first weeks in the White House, Mrs. Obama has emerged as a champion of healthy food and healthy living. She has praised community vegetable gardens, opened up her own kitchen to show off the White House chefs’ prowess with vegetables and told stories about feeding less fattening foods to her daughters. White House officials say the focus on healthy living will be a significant item on Mrs. Obama’s agenda, which already includes supporting working families and military spouses. As the nation battles an obesity epidemic and a hard-to-break taste for oversweetened and oversalted dishes, her message is clear: Fresh, nutritious foods are not delicacies to be savored by the wealthy, but critical components of the diets of ordinary and struggling families.

Terrific article and I thought this was very smart;

Ms. Reichl would like the White House kitchen to issue regular news releases that describe what the first couple and their daughters are eating. (Then parents across the country could tell their children, “You know, Malia and Sasha were eating salad yesterday. ...”)

I'll bet there are little girls all over the country this would work with. Having raised a boy, I'm not sure how well it would work for them LOL.

First Lady Michelle Obama is using her first official trip outside of Washington as a backdrop for her, as ABC News puts it, "first network television interview" since becoming first lady. On Thursday, Mrs. Obama travels to North Carolina to visit military families at Fort Bragg, taking to its highest level yet a major agenda item, helping the kin of our nations' soldiers. Since taking over the East Wing, Mrs. Obama has given interviews to magazines--the latest Oprah Winfrey's "O" and People, but folks slice and dice into categories when claiming firsts.
The interview with Robin Roberts will be well used with ABC News offering an attractive package: the interview on Roberts' show, "Good Morning America" and clips on "World News with Charles Gibson" and "Nightline."

Michelle Obama is expected to make a stop in downtown Fayetteville after her visit to Fort Bragg on Thursday. Whether the public will get a chance to see or mingle with the first lady hasn’t been disclosed. Those details could come today. Gannet Tseggai, a White House spokeswoman, said the first lady would tour Fort Bragg, meeting with military spouses and speaking to community organizations that provide support to the soldiers and their families. “There will be a community gathering at the end of the day, but the details are not public yet,” Tseggai said in an e-mail Tuesday. According to local sources familiar with her planned trip, Obama is expected to stop in a downtown location on or near Hay Street just before 5 p.m. Thursday. The event will be semi-public, meaning most people attending will be by invitation, the sources say.

i do too! my weakness is (besides bad-tempered gsds) jewelry. i'd lend her a lovely emerald set that i have or maybe rubies. her skin tone would totally wash out the opals that i have but the diamonds would be beautiful.

IMO, she's doing a great job. she does with kids what i can do with critters. good for her! people screaming about taxes on borrowed jewelry are obviously not big sisters that have lent out a necklace for a little sisters wedding or then expected to what? receive a tax credit for it? WTH?

JMO but anyone that whines about & envies her borrowed jewelry & clothes is nothing but a whiner. get over it! just because she's not a botoxed stepford wife is not reason to be a hater. i'm not directing this at anyone, just trying to defend a mom who happens to be the First Lady. yes, she gets perks, so do all the hollywood starlets. it doesn't bother me a bit. i've never met her, prolly never will but don't we have better things to do?????

Emeralds huh? My favorite stone...and they would look beautiful on her.

But I agree that she is doing a wonderful job. And I'm proud she's our new First Lady.

Here is one of the best articles I've read about her.

Why She Matters

Obama is the first African-American first lady in U.S. history. She has already provoked the kind of feminist controversy — should she advise her husband? should she stop working? should her primary role be as a mother to the couple’s two daughters? — that has gone hand in hand with the job since the middle of the 20th century. Not to mention the tempest over her penchant for wearing sleeveless dresses.

Girl, you'd lose your mind over my emeralds. that is a wonderful article, i'd like to see her do more with military families. but she's already done more that most of the (imo) valium-ed out women in the white house. she is such a role model for both my sons & my daughter (to be).

I'm sure I would, but I have settled for citrines and they make me happy. And they would look beautiful on MO too.

I really appreciate that she is taking time for military wives. They are probably more forgotten then any other part of the population.

During the campaign, there was talk in the Obama ranks that Michelle should stop wearing sleeveless dresses, because her muscles, combined with her potent personality, made her daunting. She ignored that talk, thank heavens. I love the designer-to-J. Crew glamour. Combined with her workaday visits to soup kitchens, inner-city schools and meetings with military families, Michelle’s flair is our depression’s answer to Ginger Rogers gliding around in feathers and lamé. Her arms, and her complete confidence in her skin, are a reminder that Americans can do anything if they put their minds to it. Unlike Hillary, who chafed at the loathed job of first lady, and Laura, who for long stretches disappeared into the helpmeet role, Michelle has soared every day, expanding the job to show us what can be accomplished by a generous spirit, a confident nature and a well-disciplined body.

I also have no doubt she can talk cap-and-trade with ease and panache.

http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/03/06/cellphone_photo/

Oh good grief! At least post the part in the article where a 'homeless' man took a picture of BO with a cell phone.

The first lady visited a Washington, D.C., homeless shelter on Thursday, bringing fruit collected in a White House food drive and serving some of the shelter's clients. That alone isn't objectionable, of course. But some conservatives -- sparked by a blog post from the Los Angeles Times' Andrew Malcom -- are in a tizzy over an Associated Press photo that shows a man taking a picture of Obama using a cellphone.

That's what people got upset about. How can a homeless man have a cell phone? Where is the bill sent too? How can he pay the cell phone bill?

And this constant attack on the right is getting old.

Why not just post the good she did that day for the homeless? I think that is wonderful of her, you didn't need to add this extra crap.

Who’s walking Bo? Well, the Obamas are taking shifts. The president takes the night shift, usually just before 10 p.m., the first lady, Michelle Obama, told Time magazine. She walks the dog in the early morning (and picks up a few other shifts during the day, for good measure). “We sort of handle Bo like we did the kids,’’ said Mrs. Obama, who appears on the cover of this week’s Time magazine. “I’m the early-morning person … Once I go to bed, I don’t care what happens. Just make sure the dog doesn’t have an accident.” The first lady, who appears on this week’s cover of Time magazine, describes a comfortable and fulfilling family life in the White House where she and her daughters occasionally visit the president in the Oval Office and they all sit around the dinner table and describe the days’ “roses and thorns,” the good and bad things that happened that day.

First Lady Michelle Obama is kicking off a White House push to underscore the importance of volunteeerism in San Francisco on Monday -- a move that will have political figures here elbowing each other to get in the frame with her.

But step aside, folks, it's California First Lady Maria Shriver who snags that honor before all. Volunteerism has long been her leading issue, and she's going to be alongside First Lady Michelle for the day in the starring role.

Hey YoYo.. I'm a local.. lol.. I know you already know that... you want my opinion.

Love how a few reincarnates that were previously BANNED feel like being they have new clothes on they can intimidate people.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.. not everyone is in love with the new first couple.. not everyone is infatuated with MO.. that's their opinion which they are more than entitled to.

Why does it take a visit from the first lady to get volunteers to come out and clean up one of the worst areas and make a "playground".. why didn't the city do this before with MO.. just another photo op IMO.. which again I am more than entitled to.

OK.. DeepBlu C.. scurry along now.. you have some reporting to do that I posted MY OPINION just like you do...
