WINTON HILLS – Relatives looked out for Esme Kenney because she was the baby of her family.

That’s why it was so difficult Sunday for the tight-knit group to understand how and why the 13-year-old who left for a jog Saturday afternoon never returned.

Police found Esme’s body at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, nearly 12 hours after she was last seen jogging and just a block from where she grew up on Winton Ridge Lane.
Later Sunday, police arrested Anthony Kirkland, 40, whom they discovered in the woods. Kirkland, who faces a murder charge, has a prior police record.

Brad Kenney, Esme’s cousin, said the seventh-grader who attended the School for Creative & Performing Arts was special.

So sad!! Such a beautiful life this little girl was living. I seriuosly dont know when it is ever safe enough to let children out of our site! I can't imagine having girls, my boys worry me enough. How harmless to see your daughter go out for a run. Makes me so mad.

It seems no child is safe. Boys are preyed upon by these sadistic pedophiles too. No adult is safe either, be it man or woman.

It has just become such a frightening time for parents when children cant just be children anymore. They can be snatched from their very own yards, out for a jog, playing in a park or simply going down to the neighborhood corner store.

Such tragedy each and everyday, it seems.

A convicted sex offender was ordered held on $5,350,000 bond this morning on charges he killed a 13-year-old girl student at the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts who went for a run Saturday and never came home.

Police found Esme Kenney ’s body at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, nearly 12 hours after she was last seen jogging and just a block from where she grew up on Winton Ridge Lane in Winton Hills. Later Sunday, police arrested Kirkland, whom they discovered in the woods. Kirkland was charged with murder.

According to county records, Kirkland was convicted in March 2008 of soliciting sex from a 13-year-old girl and was jailed until Oct. 20, 2008. He was sentenced to spend one year in prison and ordered to register his name on a public list of sex offenders. In February he failed to register and a warrant was issued for his arrest last Wednesday.

IMO, it is because they have no feelings for human life. They just do their brutality and then murder the innocent victim to leave no witness behind.

It is my understanding that these predators usually have proir run ins with the law. They eventually become murders so they can eliminate any witnesses. Truly tragic.

I grew up not far from where Esme was killed. I remember going fishing with my dad and cousins near where she was found. This is so tragic and senseless. That guy had no business being out in the real world, IMO.

well if we look at "the list", I think we can see that the cost to imprison all those people would be high, we would have to give up the drug war to be able to afford it and to make room for them all in the prisons.....

The connection in my mind is this:

It takes alot of staff to review mail, screen visitors, etc. Instead, the money paying that staff could be used to build extra cells and pay guards to do their job, not to filter through mail and screen visitors for people that don't deserve mail or visitors.

i.e. convicted murderers and pedophiles do not deserve any of the following luxuries:

television
newspapers
books
mail
visitors

but they get those things and that's expensive to taxpayers. Make the cutbacks with the privileges that are give those incarcarated. Don't ship these scumballs back on our streets to kill our children.

your the one that brought up the bread and water for all prisoners, ect... ect... ect... - I think we have no right to treat all prisoners inhuman because you feel some are the worst of the worst, just think if you were in there with the worst of the worst, not somewhere I would want to sleep, we treat them with the basics, nothing more, the better behaved they are the better living conditions they have to a point, the worse behaved they are the less privileges they have, that helps the guards control them

Lisa...I am with you on this. End the drug war. It is a failure just as Prohibition was. Leave maximum security to sub humans like this, if you are so inclined. I myself prefer the death penatly for cases like this, but many would not agree. |

Kirkland collapsed during the hearing today, but was propped up and the arraignment was continued.

Prosecutor Joe Deters has asked for the DP if Kirkland is found guilty.

Makes me long for the days of public hangings, or Old Smokey.

to rehabilite these dregs of society. These aminals should be culled form the rest of

I couldn't believe it when I heard the report that 78 registered sex offenders were within a 5 mile radius of Sandra Cantu's home. I wonder if the public were aware of these statistics.
I agree...there is no cure for these deranged, vile creatures. If a dog posed half as much threat to a child it would be destroyed yet...they are not even confined..they are allowed to slither around playgrounds and schools seeking out their next victim.
