An Amber Alert has been issued for a missing 5-year-old girl from Putnam County in northeast Florida.
Haleigh (http://www2.tbo.com/topic/k/haleigh/) Cummings was last seen at her home in Satsuma at 3 this morning, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said.
The child is 3 feet (http://www2.tbo.com/topic/k/3-feet/) tall, weighs 39 pounds and has blond hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt (http://www2.tbo.com/topic/k/pink-shirt/) and underwear, the sheriff's office said.
Detectives have not released details surrounding her disappearance.
A missing child (http://www2.tbo.com/topic/k/missing-child/) alert was issued early this morning. It was changed to an Amber Alert shortly before 11 a.m. An Amber Alert is issued in serious, time-critical child-abduction cases and is not used for cases of runaways or parental abductions except in life-threatening situations, according to the Department of Justice Web site.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts should call the Putnam sheriff's office at (386) 329-0808 or 911.
Please let this child be found safe and unharmed.

The "back door open" part is actually a good sign. When my youngest son was 2 1/2 years old, he got up out of bed in the middle of the night, pushed a chair over to the front door, climbed up and unlocked the deadbolt (for the FIRST TIME EVER), and let himself out. At about 5:00 am, we were wakened by the doorbell and discovered a police officer at our open front door holding our son in his arms. We were amazed and asked him how he knew which house our son had come from. He told us, "At this age, they generally don't close the door behind themselves so we just drive up and down the streets until we see a house with its front door open."
Presumably a kidnapper would have shut the back door to delay detection, so hopefully an open back door indicates that the child let herself out.

Girl, 5, Vanishes From Bedroom; Amber Alert Issued
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Haleigh Ann Marie Cummings was last seen at 10 p.m. Monday in her bed at her home on Green Lane, where she lived with her father and his girlfriend.
The last person to see Haleigh was her father's girlfriend, who told investigators that she saw the child in her bed. Haleigh's father was reportedly at work Monday night and his girlfriend was the only other person in the house when Haleigh apparently disappeared.
Deputies were notified of her disappearance and began a search at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Putnam County sheriff's Capt. Steve Rose said there were no signs that the house had been broken into, but he did not know whether the doors and windows were locked.
"We have an extensive search under way involving 50 people, and that number is growing," Rose said Tuesday morning.

Here's another story, equally confusing details. In this story, she was discovered missing by her father's girlfriend. I wonder where he was all night, that he arrived home at 3:30.
In this story, the door was " not locked". Some people use the term "open" for that.
I'm always very curious about parents who check on their kids in the wee hours? Who does that? Maybe I'm different, but I wouldn't check on a 5 year old at 3:30 a.m. but I will say that SO many times a child is reported "missing" by the parents, they state they checked on them in the middle of the night.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,490466,00.html
I am confused also because I read the father was at work, he returned home, checked on her and she was gone? I check on my kids if I get up in the night, not because I am afraid they won't be there but to make sure they still have their blanket on, make sure they are still asleep etc.

On the other hand, it seems like a very strange coincidence that the girlfriend checked on Haleigh in the wee hours in the morning, to find her missing, at just the moment Haleigh's dad came home. I don't understand that.

An Amber Alert has been issued for a missing Putnam County girl.
Haleigh Cummings, 5, was last seen at 10 p.m. Monday in the bedroom of the Satsuma home where she lives with her father, Ronald Cummings and his girlfriend, Misty Croslin.
Ronald Cummings was working Monday night, and Croslin woke up and realized Haleigh was missing just before he returned home at about 3:30 a.m. this morning, according to Lt. Johnny Greenwood of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Croslin alerted authorities while Ronald Cumming searched for his daughter, Greenwood said.
Haleigh's mother was in Georgia, where she lives, when Haleigh went missing, Greenwood said.
Greenwood said that deputies are searching the area near Haleigh's home and speaking with her family members. It's too soon to know whether she was abducted by a stranger, and there were no signs that her home had been broken into he said.
"At this point, all we know is that we have a missing little girl," he said.
Haleigh is three feet tall, weighs 39 pounds, and has blonde hair and brown eyes. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing a pink shirt and underwear. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at 386-329-0808.

Deputies began a search of the area at 3:30 a.m. after the father came home from work and found the door of the girl's bedroom open and Haleigh missing. St. Johns and Volusia county have also sent resources to help and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has contributed two boats and a helicopter to the search.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued an endangered/missing alert before 9 a.m. Less than two hours later, authorities upgraded it to an Amber Alert.
Rose said that while they have no reason to suspect foul play, deputies were contacting known sex offenders in the area to establish their whereabouts.

We have the same problem here. The guy's victim was an 8 yr old - 1st degree rape in 1994. I measured the distance from his house to the closest elementary school and he is legal by about 10 ft where he is - but the bus stop is right by his house. Nothing we can do about it.
Hmm - I wonder if I should try to keep a copy of the Public Safety print-out on him tacked on a nearby pole. Do they update those photos or would the photo be from 1994?

Law enforcement officers with boats and aircraft are searching an area of southern Putnam County for a 5-year-old girl last seen at home about 10 p.m. Monday, authorities said.
A missing and endangered child alert has been issued for Haleigh Cummings, last seen in the Hermit's Cove area of Satsuma when she was in bed. About 3 a.m. the girl's father came home and saw her missing, said Lt. Johnny Greenwood of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. A woman believed to be the father's wife or girlfriend was also asleep in the residence.
Greenwood said the father noticed Haleigh missing and woke the woman. He said there is no immediate evidence of foul play but that the home off Seven Sisters Road is very near the St. Johns River and that there are canals reaching into the neighborhood.
Haleigh was wearing a pink shirt and underwear, according the Missing Child Alert.
She is described as 3 feet tall, white with blonde hair and blue eyes, weighing 39 pounds.
Authorities said Haleigh's father returned home and, though there was another person in the residence, discovered that his daughter was missing.
A tearful Ronald Cummings this afternoon said he came home to find his girlfriend up and his daughter missing.
“I know somebody took my little girl,” he said.
When he arrived home the back door of the mobile home was open, he said. He said his girlfriend had gotten up to go to the restroom and found Haleigh missing.
Cummings said he is sure his daughter did not leave on her own.
“There is no way,” he said. “My daughter is afraid of the dark.”
The last time he saw her was when she got off the school bus, he said.
“She said she’d see me when I got home.”
Cummings appealed to anyone who knew where his daughter might be to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
“That’s all I want is someone to return my child,” he said.
Search crews continue to scour the area with dogs, a helicopter and dozens of people. One neighbor said she woke up about 3:30 a.m. and saw officers with flashlights. Investigators had the dogs out by her dock three separate times and about 4:30 a.m. they asked to search her home. They searched other homes as well.
If you have any information concerning the whereabouts of this endangered child, contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at (386) 329-0808.

Why did the GF go to check on "little Haleigh" (per one of the articles posted here) and not on "children", after she heard the noise? Of course, not pointing any fingers here, at all - just so hard to sort through this confusing reporting!!
Ditto! I am so frustrated with news reports so far. I really would like to know if girlfriend heard noise and got up to check . . . or got up to go to bathroom . . . if father came home and woke girlfriend up . . . or when father got home, girlfriend was already up? Makes my head spin.

Just saw an amber alert on the news for this little girl...had to come see what you guys were saying. I pray to God that her father or his gfriend had nothing to do with this. I hope whoever has her will let her come home safe to her family. This story is all too familiar.

This is awful, it's been 12 hours at least now. I hope they are questioning people in the neighbourhood. Any strange cars around, anybody hanging around who didn't belong there? Is there a playground Haleigh frequents, any suspicious guys without children seen there?
Could it be that the gf heard the noise, woke up and went to restroom, then checked on the girls...could both those reports work together to be consistent? My god, maybe the man or whoever had just taken Haleigh right after gf woke up and the sound was actually outside.

OK... Now, per this article, Haleigh's bedroom door was open, so that's why the GF went to check on her... My head is spinning too!
"The sheriff's office said Haleigh's bedroom door was open when her father's girlfriend woke up to go check on her at about 3:45 a.m.
Investigators haven't said what stirred the father's girlfriend at that hour, but authorities say she called 911 when she discovered Haleigh missing from her room."
Also per this article, the mother is in Florida now.

More than 100 officers from at least seven county, state and federal law enforcement agencies continued the search for a missing 5-year-old Putnam County girl Tuesday afternoon.

On foot, in helicopters and with blood hounds, the search for Haleigh Ann-Marie Cummings, 5, has been expanded since she was reported missing at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday from her east Putnam County home. An Amber Alert was issued nationwide before 9:30 a.m.
The girl was last seen in her bed at 10 p.m. Monday. Haliegh lived with her father and his girlfriend at 202 Green Lane in the Hermit Cove area of the Buffalo Bluff community, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Officers with Florida Fish and Wildlife and other agencies are searching the banks of the St. Johns River with blood hounds. Among the agencies involved in the search are the FBI, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Palatka Police Dept., and Sheriff's offices from Flagler, Volusia, St. Johns and Putnam counties.
The heightened investigation is an effort to engage every resource available early in the search, said Putnam Sheriff's Capt. Steve Rose.
"They always tell you when you have a case of this magnitude, it's always better to flood your resources up front," said Rose. "We are looking at everything because at this point we don't know" what we have.
Haleigh is approximately 3 feet tall, with dirty blond hair, brown eyes, pierced ears and weighing about 39 pounds and was last seen wearing pink shorts and a tan shirt.
Rose said there were no initial signs of forced entry, but officers found a door in the house ajar. He could not confirm whether the doors where locked.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Putnam County Sheriff's Office at (386)329-0800.
There will be a 4 p.m. press briefing held near the neighborhood where the girl lives.

The mention that she's afraid of the dark and wouldn't leave voluntarily...that really gave me a lump in my throat for some reason. Little ones are so vulnerable and tender, the thought of what has or will probably happen to her is unbearable!
I am praying that her mother has her. It really seems the only "safe" option at this point. It's been over 12 hours since she was known to be missing.

I find it very, very odd that neither the other child nor the teenager woke up IF someone was in the room in the middle of the night. Makes me wonder if they know more and are scared to tell. Or if Haleigh was in the bedroom during the night at all. Just throwing some ideas out there - something might have happened while the father was at work (thinking of Riley Ann Sawyers here...).

Or it could be that she created her page to look someone up (it was required before to have an account to view full profiles, don't know about now). She is listed as SINGLE there (could just mean "not married", not necessarily "not in a relationship", but makes me wonder how long they have been together/ have been living together if she was single in September...)

I pray that this child will be found safe.
Since it was impractical to have all 3 kids sleep in my bedroom, I had a large barky dog that lived in the house. She slept with one eye open.
When they got to be teenagers, I got smart and installed a burglar alarm. It kept them in and their friends out.
It was $800.00 and well worth it.
You don't even have to have the monthly bill, but it will beep, beep if a door or window is opened.

I think its pretty normal if you just arrived home. That is different than waking up in the middle of the night, but even then i can see it.
Also, if there was a stranger its quite possible that the parent heard something subconsciously while sleeping and therefore checked even if they didn't know why.

When you first sign up for Myspace, it automatically sets your relationship status as single unless you go to your profile details and change it. So, it could be that she never did that, because she never used it.

I check my kids if for some reason I get up. I just look to see if they aren't hanging off the bed or uncovered or whatever, LOL, I'm not checking to see if they aren't there. One of the links says the gf got up to use the bathroom, so it wouldn't be unusual in this circumstance to then check the child IMO.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says a rear door to the trailer was found open. The girl's father, Ronald Cummings, told First Coast News the door was forced open.
Bump says search dogs led investigators to the river near her home.
"They walked right down to the end of the dock and ever since then they have been looking in the water," said Bump.
lune3
02-10-2009, 09:54 PM
Since it appears the dogs led investigators right to the dock from the trailer, that could imply that Haleigh may have been taken immediately by boat. She could be anywhere along that river. I wonder if boats normally dock there and if so, whether LE is looking into boat owners or whether people saw any unfamiliar boats.

I am hoping that everyone that was in the house is cooperating with the police, so that they can be cleared.
If this is a single wide trailer, the second BR would be small and only have one bed. A teen and 2 toddlers could easily sleep in 1 bed, though.
But since it was a school night, what was the 17 YO doing there or did she live there, too?
I have known teens that could sleep through a brass band going through the bedroom.
I keep hoping to hear that she has been found alive.
So there were three in the bedroom. I can understand a two year old sleeping through anything, but a 17 year old? You'd think that a perp taking a child would have caused some sound, or that Haleigh would have woken up and made some noise. Wonder if they each slept in separate beds.
does anyone know if they have a cat or dog? I know she was afraid of the dark but it seems to me that little ones can do some surprising things to follow a pet...the story about the scent ending at the river worries me, i can see her following a puppy or cat and falling in if she woke up and it was crying to go outside.
I would prefer that end tho to a sex offender taking, raping and murderign her. Obviously what i really want is for her to be alive but it doesnt look good.

Maybe we can move on from the Anthony family and begin the search for this little girl now.
I read in an article somewhere that the Haleigh and the girlfriend were sleeping in the same bed and when the girlfriend came out from going to the bathroom, Haleigh was gone. That doesn't give a very big window of opportunity for someone to go in and snatch a kid. Bathrooms are normally pretty close to the bedrooms too. We lived about 10 miles from there for about three years awhile back. They do have their fair share of druggies, drunks, and mentally unstable people in that end of the county but even still, its hard to imagine someone being able to pick just the right moment to grab a child and run in a situation like that. Then again, the news media isn't always correct so maybe what was reported in that article was not completely true. I sure do hope she's found today and that she is alive and unharmed.

Haleigh was last seen in her Satsuma home on Green Lane with her 2-year-old brother and her father's 17-year-old girlfriend. The girlfriend told police she put the children to bed at 10 p.m. Monday but when she awoke at 3 a.m. to use the bathroom Haleigh was missing and the back door of the home was open.
The 17-year-old called 911 for help as Haleigh's father returned home from an overnight shift at work:
CALLER: I just woke up and my back door was all open and I can't find my daughter.
DISPATCH: Can't find what?
CALLER: My daughter.
DISPATCH:Ok. When did you last see her?
CALLER: Um, we just like, you know, it was about 10 o'clock. She was sleeping (inaudible).
DISPATCH: Ok. How old is your daughter?
CALLER: She's 5.
DISPATCH: OK. What was she last seen wearing, Ma'am?
CALLER: She was in her pajamas. We were sleeping.
DISPATCH: OK. Alright, you said your back door was wide open?
CALLER: Yes, with a brick. Like, there was a brick on the floor. Like, when I went to sleep the door was not like that.
DISPATCH: Was your back door locked do you know?
CALLER: Yes. The back door always stays locked.
FATHER: I just got home from work, my 5-year-old daughter is gone. I need someone to be here now. I'm telling you. If I find whoever has my daughter before you all do, I'm killing him. I don't care. I'll spend the rest of my life in prison.
DISPATCH: It's OK sir, we got them on the way. Can you give me a description of the pajamas she was wearing?
FATHER: I don't (expletive) know I was at work.

Ok. Another article states that the girlfriend got up to go to the bathroom and noticed that Haleigh wasn't in her room. So, which is it? or is it neither? Why can't the media be bothered to take the few moments to get the facts before they present a story? Isn't that supposed to be part of the job?
As for checking on children in the middle of the night, my babies are 18 and 30 and I still check on them whenever I wake up at night, even though one has a Doberman in the room and the other has a Chow and a Bulldog.

It's very confusing. The girlfriend is now stated as 17 years old and in the 911 call, said the door was always locked. The father arrives at the same time the girlfriend is on the phone. And why would a teenager called Haleigh her daughter, strange. Was there a cousin there or not?
Even more confusing are the comments made by local people, listed at the end of the "previous" article on which you can click below the article with the 911 call.
The father's words sound absolutely frantic. Praying that there is a good outcome, but it isn't likely at this point.

Well he could be in a panic, coming to the worst conclusion. I don't know. But I'd think if he just got home, he'd be running around outside looking for her..unless they both did that before calling 911.
Something I noticed..in every article so far the father, in his quotes, has never called his daughter by her name, Haleigh. It's always been "my daughter" or "my child".

It IS confusing. There's a comment by a local person who says Haleigh has a three year old brother (same mother), but that it's unknown who the 2 year old is...person was speculating the 2yr old is the teenage girlfriend's child. Also said the dad had temporary custody of Haleigh, saying they didn't know why.

Per this article below, it sounds like the 2-year old brother has the same parents as Haleigh (I saw his photos on the mother's MySpace, who also has a third child with another man), and the 176-year old, earlier referred to as "cousin" is in fact Misty Croslin, the father's girk-friend. In this case, the two children were in one bedroom, there was no teenager with them.

ETA: I am still confused... If there was a brick holding the door open, why are LE saying there was no sign of forced entry (I guess it's not really a forced entry, but would indicate someone put it there; obviosuly, so they could escape easily). How would someone know that the door would be unlocked? And that the father was at work? It would have to be someone who knows the family and their routine. What a scary thought!
It concerns me that she hasn't been found yet. When I first read about this story, I thought perhaps the dad and girlfriend went out partying and left little Haleigh alone with the 2 year old. I thought perhaps she woke up and went to look for her daddy and that's why the door was "open".

Haleigh wasn't in bed. The back door of a blue doublewide mobile home was open, and a blanket and sheets were scattered on the wooden ramp leading from the door.
Authorities said they were told Haleigh's father, Ronald, had just ended his shift at PDM Bridge in Palatka. His girlfriend, Misty Croslin, said she had been sleeping next to Haleigh, but when she awoke, the blonde-haired girl was gone.

Wow someone can't get the city to make him move? It is against the law for a registered sex offender to live that close to a bus stop...that would definitely freak me out.
It is against the law in our county as well BUT.....in Momma Whiteshark's community, there is a sexual predator who lives directly across the street from a bus stop----how does he get away with it? His step-father (who is now dead) was a judge in another county, so the predator was able to get a special "waiver". The judges influence I guess was especially strong because he was able to get this waiver from the grave as he had died a couple of years before the waiver application for...........:cursing::cursing:
The only good thing is that this "waiver" is to be up for reconsideration by the county next month. The commission has several new members now and we are all campaigning hard.....
what is with all these conflicting stories....I pray for this child, but sadly it sounds as wierd as Caylee's story did in the first couple of days with all these versions.

Since it appears the dogs led investigators right to the dock from the trailer, that could imply that Haleigh may have been taken immediately by boat. She could be anywhere along that river. I wonder if boats normally dock there and if so, whether LE is looking into boat owners or whether people saw any unfamiliar boats.
sadly, one also has to wonder if the child just walked down there, fell or jumped in and if that isn't sad enough---if alligators were around. This is Florida.:crying:

I listened to the snippet of the 911 call, they both sound shocked. Now if it is true that there was a brick up against the door, sheets outside of the house I cannot see how the dad could of came to any other conclusion about what had happened with his daughter. Why would a 5 year old put a brick there? I think when he came home he knew exatly what happened just by looking around.
I really hope they find this little girl, I think if I was in the same position as the dad I would say the same thing to 911, better find the person who took her before I do.

I wonder if she often went there to the dock, or went there very recently and that's how they got her scent to the dock, because she had played there the day before.
I am honestly getting the feeling like this is someone who knows them and possibly used the dock to remove her. That brick is what is sticking out in my head right now.

Investigators are pursuing "several different angles"
I am holding off on posting my opinion for the moment because the news reports are all over the place, but I have a very bad feeling about this case.

It seems the 17 y/o is the girlfriend. And, in the video I saw last night, (where none of them looked to be 17, so maybe she wasn't in it) the dad and an older woman say the girlfriend went to the bathroom and when she came back the little girl was gone. But, it seems HER statement is she was asleep. Either way, kind of spooky that someone could take a little girl sleeping right next to an almost adult, OR, to be lurking in the house and taking the opportunity of taking the little girl while the girlfriend went to the bathroom.
And, her age might make a difference--in the sleeping thing. Most teenagers seem to be able to sleep thru anything. If the kids hadn't been w/them long, she might not have gotten into the mommy groove yet of sleeping w/one ear open to hear the kids.

It could even be that it was normal for the dad to remove the little girl from the bed once he got home and put her into a different bed? You would be used to that after awhile and it wouldn't wake you up...if something like that was going on..once again someone that knows the routine.

According to investigators, Haleigh, her 2-year-old brother and her father's 17-year-old girlfriend, Mistie Croslin, went to bed in the same room. Deputies say Croslin told them that the little girl got up to go to the bathroom around 3:30 a.m.
It was around the same time Haleigh's father, Ronald, got home from work. When they went back into the bedroom they discovered Haleigh was gone. Investigators say the back door was wide open, but won't say if there was any forced entry
I am really confused. Now the girlfriend says the little girl got up to go the bathroom? If she was awake to know the little girl got up wouldn't she have heard something? Would she not go and check on her when she didn't immediatly return? Something not right here.:sneaky:

So there were three in the bedroom. I can understand a two year old sleeping through anything, but a 17 year old? You'd think that a perp taking a child would have caused some sound, or that Haleigh would have woken up and made some noise. Wonder if they each slept in separate beds.
Well, it isn't impossible. Remember Elizabeth Smart--wasn't her sister in the room. And then poor Polly-----that was a sleepover with several girls. Danielle had a sibling in the room. It can be done as we have seen reported many times....although it seems impossible to a lot of us.

It seems impossible to us because we can't comprehend kidnapping a child. When these predators want a specific child they will take a lot of chances.

I think we all have a very bad feeling. Statistically speaking, stanger abductions are rare.
But, stranger abduction or harmed by someone in her own home, the odds of her being found safe at this point are very slim. :(
I don't get the feeling that this is a stranger abduction. A question I want answered is "When was the last time Haleigh was seen by someone outside the immediate family? Was she seen by neighbors or friends earlier on the night in question?”

I look at that precious child and KNOW I couldn't leave her a state behind period. I understand her biological mother has spoken with authorities and she got there quickly from GA, but no media access.
Maybe that's for the best, but just maybe mom and dad pleading for her return could reach Haleigh.
So, a brick was left holding the back door open....that leads me to believe abduction and not looking at the GF at THIS TIME. I feel that way simply because IF a predator was watching and waiting, they could have been ready and waiting for just a slight opportunity to whisk her away.
I am just sick thinking about all the sexual offenders in that area. :crying:

OK .. I soooooooooo hesitate to come out and say this but ...
If I were a teenager, living with an older man, taking care of his children, and "something" happened:
a. I accidently or purposely hurt her and disposed of her
b. I had someone else over who did something to her
c. Had someone I knew who took her
d. Sold her ..
e. Whatever .....
... and I knew that my "man" was coming home at 3:30, this would be the perfect time to "get up and discover her missing". I mean, chances are I'm still awake and will have to explain that somehow .. I'm in survival mode and am going to get my story told and get the heck out of there .. (I'm now staying with MY family now instead of supporting my "man" in his/our most horrible nightmare.. right?)

I know this is all speculation, but if LE is seeing forced entry .. then are they seeing a STAGED scene ie, the back door propped open, sheets conviently leading out that same door .. how neat ..

This has to be one of the most confusing cases I have followed lately. Aside form that, I think that if Haleigh was abducted, the abductor had to know that the father wouldn't be home, I just can't imagine someone randomly coming into the house in the middle of the night (or even 10 pm if the most recent timeline is more accurate) looking for a girl to abduct, without her parents around. That person had to have known this family dynamics.
This reminds me of both Riley Ann Sawyers and Jessica Lunsford, either scenario seem to fit somewhat. Either something happened while father was away and the GF was involved (accidentally or not), like in Riley's case, or she was abducted with people inside the house.
The media OR the GF are not making it easier to understand what exactly happened, since almost every account of that night contradicts each other!

O.k. so we have a Dad with a 17 year old girlfriend. Yikes. Not good.
Said the door was locked, but was propped open with a brick after she discovered the child missing. Sheets from the childs' bed outside. Dogs leading to river or lake. No sign of forced entry, but perhaps a door left unlocked.
1. someone knew Dad worked nights and that there was two young girls there alone.
2. Dad and/or girlfriend know more than they are saying.
This one has eery similiarites to Jessica Lunsford and Danielle VanDam. Little girls being stolen from their beds!!!!!
CAN WE PLEASE GET A ONE STRIKE LAW PASSED FOR CHILD PREDATORS. PLEASE?

Authorities with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said they have not identified a suspect.
"We're not focusing on any person as a person of interest right now. It is still truly a whodunit, meaning whether it's an abduction or a homicide or if she just wandered out," Putnam County Sheriff's Office Major Gary Bowling said.
Authorities searched the St. Johns River with boats on Tuesday, as well as an aerial search of the area using helicopters.
http://www.nbc6.net/news/18690319/detail.html
Bump says search dogs led investigators to the river near her home.
"They walked right down to the end of the dock and ever since then they have been looking in the water," said Bump.

He's 24 or 25 (depending on the source). Also, she put "19" on her MySpace, who knows, maybe that's what she told him, too.
I think it's commendable that he is taking care of his two little children. The mother has another little child with another man (per her MySpace), so I think it's wonderful he is raising his children, I am sure it's not easy, especially with his work schedule (coming home at 3 am). I can understand he was in shock and mad, and I wouldn't be too quick to judge his reaction to such horrible news. JMO

I do not condone such language or reactions, but I also want to give him the benefit of the doubt and not to judge his moral character because honestly, I don't know how I would react in such situation, at 3 am, frantic, worried and shocked, and not knowing where to look for my daughter.

Haleigh's grandfather, Johnny Sheffield, told MyFOXOrlando.com that he was distraught about the girl's disappearance and characterized Croslin as suspicious, though he admitted he didn't know much about her.
Cummings said his girlfriend was awake and frantic after she found the child was gone.
Haleigh, her 2-year-old brother and her father's girlfriend Mistie Croslin went to bed in the same room in the family's trailer home at about 10 p.m. Monday night, investigators said. Croslin told deputies the little girl got up between 3 and 3:30 a.m. to go to the bathroom.

I can understand inconsistencies at the beginning but it seems to me the inconsistencies in times and descriptions of what happened are getting worse. Its more than 24 hours later, you'd think the facts would be straight by now.
These changes in stories come from the girlfriend's words and what she saw/did rather from the dad.
Something that's a bit coincidental to me is that the girl appears to call 911 at the precise time the dad comes home.

Not saying it isn't true but you wouldn't believe the stuff people do during child custody cases. I had CPS called on ME because my friend came over my house with her kids and she was battling her ex for cutody, he said all kinds of horrible things. CPS walked in looked around and promptly left, they even apologized to me and my children for disrupting our day.

thanks happy. I dont think smelling of pot is a big issue in the sense of her being missing. There are millions of parents who smoke pot and who the grandparents disapprove of. Its easy for us to forget that it means little within the context especially a trailer - smoking in one room would be enough to make a kid smell of it even if they weren't present.
Remember the van damms? people were all suspicious of them because they were into swinging sex. Sometimes a less than orderly lifestyle or normal one has to be separated from being a child killer.
Seems like the gp's really hate the father but we have no idea if its based on reality. The child services calls may all be due to them and unfounded, we just don't know nor do we know what the mom told the gp's about the dad.

I worked in a day care center for a while, and had to record any bruises/ scratches etc. as part of my job. A day wouldn't go by without dozens of kids getting new bruises, scratches or other small injures while playing and running around. It really doesn't mean much, unless the bruises were consistent with abuse, but I doubt that is the case here since he was the one taking care of two kids and NOT the mother.

The gp's bug me. Until I have evidence otherwise, I feel terrible for him, and his gf who seems like she's torn between reporting the child missing and keeping him calm-ish.

Dad is 25. That is not that unusual if the 17 year old is reasonably mature (or at least street smart mature) and fit his maturity level. There are many 25 year old men who are less mature than 17 or 18 year old women, they seem to grow up slower. Not saying it is optimal or even good but i bet that there are lots of posters who married at 17 or 18 to a man in his early to mid twenties and it worked out well. My grandma did :D

About NG in this case... Yes and no, remember Melinda Duckett?
I tend to think neither the GF nor the father had anything to do with this, although based on 'facts' (and I am using this terms loosely here!), it sees to me the abductor had to know the family dynamics somewhat, to know that there will be no father or another male adult in the house at such hour, unless it was someone way too bold to attempt an abduction regardless of who was at home.

NG will be all over this. And regarding the OP comments...your grandmother may have...that was then..this is now. My 17 year old daughter would not being playing house with a 25 year old man. I am sorry but I was a 17 year old girl once and my parents would have NEVER allowed this. Where are her parents guidance in ANY of this?
Now you're on the right track IMO. Parents have responsibilities until a child is eighteen and somehow this situation is existing. They have our answers as to why the GF is there all night sleeping with the kids and/or living there whatever the case may be.

2:00 is the scheduled PC but I didn't get who will be covering it. I hope FOX and/or CNN will have it too.

Haleigh was supposed to spend this next weekend with her mother.

Was Misty Croslin attending school during the day? Again going to be a bad guy but kids now days are not mature enough to handle adult situations....and now regardless of the implications and if she had a hand in this she is very much in an adult situation. And regarding the maturity comment....she isn't mature or she would be living on her own, or with her parents or relatives attending school and wouldn't have been hooking up with a 25 year old with custody battles surrounding them. And smoking pot or at least being around it. Maturity is standing up for what is right....regardless of the age.

I remember melinda, but I am not of the school that blames NG. I thought she killed herself because she knew she couldn't keep up the lies about what she had done....especially to her own grandmother.
I agree with everything else you said, except about the GF. I don't know if something accidental happened or what. I just think the GF has a lot to say to investigators.

From True Crime report:
Haleigh's father has insisted that she was afraid of the dark and would not roam at night. This may have been why he was so certain right away that his daughter had been abducted. A 2-year-old child was asleep in the same room as Haleigh, and he was fine. Police said there was no sign of forced entry into the mobile home.
The Cummings residence is on a rural road in a heavily wooded area. I'm tempted to reject the idea of a sex offender kidnapping the little girl, but then I realize that in some ways, this case bears an uncomfortable resemblance to the disappearance of Jessica Lunsford.
Except, that is, for the age of the missing child. Every time I've written about a missing child who fell prey to a sexual predator, that child has been at least 7 or older. Predators who target children as young as 4 or 5 certainly do exist -- but they are relatively rare. Rarer still -- silent snatching in the dead of night. Joseph Edward Duncan III snatched two children in the dead of night, but he killed the childrens' family to eliminate witnesses -- and just maybe because he wanted to.
The odds are, most of the time, that a child as young as Haleigh Cummings is more likely to fall prey to someone close to her.

I briefly watched a little of the interview with the father and he said he's had her by himself since she was 2. At least I think that's what he said (I found him a little hard to understand but that might just be my speakers).

ok, I have a few thoughts rambling in my head...
Sounds like we MIGHT be dealing with some people who MIGHT use recreational drugs....what if dad's at work...gf has a friend(s) over for a little smoking and toking...so she's pretty stoned and falls asleep. Maybe the friend (a guy) does something to Haleigh. ORRR...maybe in a drug induction sleep, she doesnt know that Haleigh went outside...
I guess I'm wondering if gf might have been impaired in some way so she isn't saying what really happened to keep herself out of trouble?
ehh, just a thought...

Except there are at least 26 (other report said 44) registered sexual offenders in the area.

I wonder if the mom was getting every other weekend visitation? She lived some ways away, right?

In his interview the dad said he's been raising her ON HIS OWN since she was two years old. Just him speaking to the reporter in between crying and trying to hold himself together. I hope this sweet child is still with us. JMO

Bev Ann..I can see that happening.
What I also forgot to say was - being 17 I can see where she wouldn't realize that drug charge or not - it's nothing compared to how important it is that she tells us what really happened.
Also, if she was impaired it might account for some of the inconsistancies in her story. Why she might make a poor judgement call of waiting to call 911 until the dad got home?

How do we know there is a custody battle, has it been reported? Sorry if I missed it, but I haven't seen anything about it in any of the news reports or people's comments. It is quite possible that was a mutually agreed on arrangement. The mother has a little child with another man, maybe that played a role in who would be taking care of the two older children, or maybe they both had them from time to time.
Regarding the GF, we don't know how long they have been together, or how serious they are. On her MySpace, she listed herself at 19 years old, maybe that's what she told Ronald Cummings. And who knows what she had told her parents regarding her relationship or her living situation.
I understand what you are all saying and we may disapprove of their lifestyle, but I honestly don't think their lifestyle had anything to do with what happened. Elizabeth Smart was from a well-to-do family, and yet still was taken from her home with another child in the room. JMO
