The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don't have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.

Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.

This should come as a surprise to no one.

How many illegal immigrants will take advantage of that provision? Few if any, IMO.

If they do, they can be given the $ and then they can pay for a plane ride to their home country. I think the idea would be that anyone filing without a SSN would clearly stand out and it would be a red flag- complete with address..

Thank you. I just thought there are millions in that situation and little resources to check them all out. When they are caught I thought the government furnished them with transportation.

It is nice to know they have to pay for their air transportation.

That's what the problem is. To enable non citizens to receive this check, they are saying you don't need a SS number. You can use the alternative number that non-citizens use. (illegal immigrants)
