As 111th Senate Is Set to Begin, Four Seats Still Up in Air

As the gavel quietly fell yesterday on the final session of the 110th Senate, officials in several states sought to cut through the confusion surrounding a quartet of chamber seats whose future occupants remain undetermined amid succession fights and election recount disputes.

It was the Instant the Earth Stood Still. Not since Klaatu landed in a flying saucer on the Ellipse has Washington been so mesmerized by an object whirring through the sky. But this one was departing, not arriving. As W. ceased to be president, he flew off over the Capitol and across the Mall en route to Andrews Air Force Base, and then back to Texas. I’ve seen many presidents come and go, but I’ve never watched a tableau like the one Tuesday, when four million eyes turned heavenward, following the helicopter’s path out of town. Everyone, it seemed, was waving goodbye, with one or two hands, a wave that moved westward down the Mall toward the Lincoln Memorial, and keeping their eyes fixed unwaveringly on that green bird.

VIENNA, Austria - It was just a scribble in the snow.

But the giant "YES, WE CAN!" that Norbert Aschenbrenner carved in huge block letters at the U.N. complex in Vienna on Tuesday was a poignant expression of how many people in the international community are embracing Barack Obama.

The new White House website unveiled by President Barack Obama’s team Tuesday includes a shot at former President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina. Under the “agenda” portion of the site regarding Katrina, it reads: “President Obama will keep the broken promises made by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. He and Vice President Biden will take steps to ensure that the federal government will never again allow such catastrophic failures in emergency planning and response to occur.”

I thought that so many interesting things are happening that aren't important enough to have a thread could be posted here. I've already run across a couple I'd like to share.

A major Bush rule gets scrapped by Obama

(CNN) — It's the same Oval Office. The same desk. Even the same curtains. But President Obama has already made one major change: Go through eight years of White House photos, and you won't find one of former President Bush in the Oval Office without his jacket on.

Change In the Air(waves)

In one of many signs of “change” in the air, President Obama has officially tweaked the name of a White House institution, the Weekly Radio Address, which has been heard on stations across the nation each Saturday for years. Now it’s officially known as“President Barack Obama’s Weekly Video Address,” according to whitehouse.gov.

Version 44.0
President

* Leadership: Will now scale properly to national crises. Intelligence was not being properly applied.
* A bug has been fixed that allowed the President to ignore the effects of debuffs applied by the Legislative classes.
* Drain Treasury: There appears to be a bug that allowed loot to be transferred from the treasury to anyone on the President's friends list, or in the President's party. We are investigating.
* Messages to and from the President will now be correctly saved to the chat log.
* Messages originating from the President were being misclassified as originating from The American People.
* A rendering error that frequently caused the President to appear wrapped in the American Flag texture has been addressed.

Vice President

* The Vice President has been correctly reclassified as a pet.
* No longer immune to damage from the Legislative and Judicial classes.
* The Vice President will no longer aggro on friendly targets. This bug was identified with Ranged Attacks and the Head Shot ability.
* Reveal Identity: this debuff will no longer be able to target Covert Operatives.
* Messages to and from the Vice President will now be correctly saved to the chat log.
* A rendering bug was affecting the Vice President's visibility, making him virtually invisible to the rest of the server. This has been addressed.

Cabinet

* There was a bug in the last release that prevented the Cabinet from disagreeing with the President, which was the cause of a number of serious balance issues. This bug has been addressed, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

Judiciary

* Many concerns have been raised regarding balance issues in the Supreme Court. This system is maintained on a different patch schedule, and will require longer to address.
* A large number of NPCs in the Judiciary were incorrectly flagged "ideological." We are trying to identify these cases and rectify this situation.

Homeland Security

* Homeland Security Advisory System: We have identified a bug in this system that prevents the threat level from dropping below Elevated (Yellow). The code for Guarded (Blue) and Low (Green) has been commented out. We are testing the fix and hope to have it in by the next patch.
* Torture: This debuff is being removed after a record number of complaints.
* Item: Large Bottle of Water is incorrectly generating threat with TSA Agents when held in inventory. We are looking into the issue.
* Asking questions about Homeland Security was incorrectly triggering the Chain-Jingoism debuff.

Economy

* Serious on-going issues with server economy are still being addressed. We expect further roll-backs, and appreciate your help identifying and fixing bugs. We can't make these fixes without your help.

PVP

* Reputation with various factions are being rebalanced. The gradated reputation scale was erroneously being overwritten by the binary For Us/ Against Us flag.

Quests

* The" Desert Storm" quest chain was displaying an erroneous "Mission Accomplished" message near the beginning of the chain.
* The quest chain that begins with "There's no Cake like Yellow Cake" and terminates with "W-M-Denied" has been identified as uncompletable, and has been removed.

Reagents

* Many recipes that currently call for Crude Oil can now be made with Wind, Solar, Geothermal and Ethanol reagents. We hope to roll out even more sweeping changes in the next patch.

Events

* The "Axis of Evil" event is drawing to a close. Look forward to the "Rebuilding Bridges" event starting in January.

Every president has the right to portray himself as ushering in a new era of this or that. Obama wants to pursue new ties with Muslim nations, drawing on his own identity and associations. Good. But when his self-inflation as redeemer of U.S.-Muslim relations leads him to suggest that pre-Obama America was disrespectful or insensitive or uncaring of Muslims, he is engaging not just in fiction but in gratuitous disparagement of the country he is now privileged to lead.

President Obama plans to order a sweeping overhaul of the National Security Council, expanding its membership and increasing its authority to set strategy across a wide spectrum of international and domestic issues. The result will be a "dramatically different" NSC from that of the Bush administration or any of its predecessors since the forum was established after World War II to advise the president on diplomatic and military matters, according to national security adviser James L. Jones, who described the changes in an interview. "The world that we live in has changed so dramatically in this decade that organizations that were created to meet a certain set of criteria no longer are terribly useful," he said.

The Obama administration has begun the process of reviewing files of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay to determine who can be prosecuted and who can be transferred to other countries, officials said Friday, a crucial first step toward closing the prison. The review, begun this week, is also key to a decision on whether the administration can turn the page completely on the Bush administration's detention policies.

A month into her husband’s presidency, Michelle Obama is viewed more positively than were other first ladies in the past 28 years at similar stages, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. 49 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Mrs. Obama, 5 percent view her unfavorably and 44 percent do not yet have an opinion. In a February 1993 Times/CBS poll, 44 percent expressed a favorable view of the first lady at the time, Hillary Rodham Clinton, while 16 percent viewed her unfavorably. And early into Ronald Reagan’s first term in office, 28 percent rated Nancy Reagan positively and 10 percent negatively, with the rest offering no opinion.

First Lady Michelle Obama is keeping pace with her hugely popular husband, earning positive ratings among more voters than previous first ladies have had at this stage in their husbands' terms.

Mrs. Obama gets favorable marks from 49 percent of voters in a CBS-New York Times poll out yesterday, with just 5 percent seeing her unfavorably.

This guy was warning everyone that the current economic problems would occur. In these clips he's on talking head shows and all the pompous financial geniuses were laughing at him...I don't think they're laughing any more.

Travis McClure lives in a mobile home with no running water. His family – five adults and a child – uses a nearby portable toilet donated by a Rock Hill business. They carry water in large jugs from a nearby community center and heat it on their stove to wash. “When I was little this was known as Trashpile Road, and I'd be embarrassed to bring my friends down here,” said McClure, 20. “They'd be like, ‘How can you live in a place like this?' It was like we weren't even citizens of the same country.” The Blackmon Road community just south of Rock Hill has been home to poor people, mostly African Americans, since the 1940s...South Carolina still identifies Blackmon as one of the state's most “environmentally distressed” communities for water and sewer service. At least 10 homes have no indoor plumbing. Poverty is so extreme that local officials point to the community's current unemployment rate of 50 percent as an improvement – down from 75 percent in 2007. The majority of the 56 residents are elderly, or children. Average annual household income is about $7,000, more than $35,000 below the state average. As dire as life is, McClure and others believe his community is on the verge of a turnaround. He cites the community center – a double-wide trailer recently brought in by volunteers – and efforts of churches, other groups, and many of the residents themselves to haul off trash and shore up sagging houses. “I know people have been talking about improvements for a long time, but it's getting better… I know this might look bad to somebody who has never been down here before. But you gotta remember this is where we live,” McClure said. “If we could just get water and sewer, it wouldn't be perfect, but we'd be all right.”

Shinseki emphasized that this is only "a consideration" and not yet part of Obama's budget request. But members of the veterans' committees wanted Shinseki to know they won't support the proposal.

Obama’s proposed 2010 budget for the VA calls for a total budget of $113 billion, a $15 billion increase above 2009 levels. The request includes $52.5 billion in discretionary funding – an increase of $4.9 billion from 2009, or 10.3 percent. The bulk of discretionary spending goes to VA medical care.

WASHINGTON — A federal court ruled yesterday that the District of Columbia had unlawfully arrested about 70 people during an anti-war and anti-Bush protest march on Inauguration Day 2005. The arrestees are now entitled to a trial to determine the amount of the District's monetary liability to them.

Quarantining dissent
How the Secret Service protects Bush from free speech

When President Bush travels around the United States, the Secret Service visits the location ahead of time and orders local police to set up "free speech zones" or "protest zones," where people opposed to Bush policies (and sometimes sign-carrying supporters) are quarantined. These zones routinely succeed in keeping protesters out of presidential sight and outside the view of media covering the event.

When Bush went to the Pittsburgh area on Labor Day 2002, 65-year-old retired steel worker Bill Neel was there to greet him with a sign proclaiming, "The Bush family must surely love the poor, they made so many of us." The local police, at the Secret Service's behest, set up a "designated free-speech zone" on a baseball field surrounded by a chain-link fence a third of a mile from the location of Bush's speech. The police cleared the path of the motorcade of all critical signs, but folks with pro-Bush signs were permitted to line the president's path. Neel refused to go to the designated area and was arrested for disorderly conduct; the police also confiscated his sign.

It is widely held that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delayed disclosure or vastly under-reported other nonmonetary contributions to the campaign.

As many as 1,025 individuals and businesses in Utah donated $3.8 million to Proposition 8 efforts. Meanwhile only 2 per cent of the California population is of the Mormon faith.

Like I said before, too bad they didn't feed some starving children with that money. I guess they had more important ways to spend their time and money (and hid it too). :sneaky:

http://www.mormongate.com/

The Mormon Church appears to have created the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) in the summer of 2007 to qualify California’s Proposition 8 for the November 2008 ballot. They set it up as a Mormon front group, exactly as they did with a very similar organization called Hawaii’s Future Today (HFT) in that state in 1995. HFT was established to pass a constitutional amendment in Hawaii to ban same-sex marriage. Sound familiar? They have now expanded NOM into seven more states, specifically to fight same-sex marriage in those states.

President Barack Obama said he believes the global financial system remains at risk of implosion with the failure of Citigroup or AIG, which could touch off “an even more destructive recession and potentially depression.”

His remarks came in a“60 Minutes” interview in which he was pressed by Steve Kroft for laughing and chuckling several times while discussing the perilous state of the world’s economy.

“You're sitting here. And you're— you are laughing. You are laughing about some of these problems. Are people going to look at this and say, ‘I mean, he's sitting there just making jokes about money—’ How do you deal with— I mean: explain. . .” Kroft asked at one point.

Actually, it wasn't until I turned off MSNBC and went to the computer for my information, that I began to see what was going on. This info I find disturbing.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/24/doj_supports_riaa/

In this case the Obama Administration has decided that Constitutional rights should be disregarded when it comes to copyright laws. The argument isn’t about whether copyright laws are wrong, it’s about the unconstitutional, heavy-handed damages allowed by the Digital Theft Deterrence and Copy Right Improvement Act of 1999.

This Act allows the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), a private entity, to inflict ruinous damages of up to $150,000 for each “willful” violation of copyright law. Considering that a download from iTunes costs about .99 c, it’s pretty obvious the punishment is far greater than the crime; and, in effect makes the RIAA a civil enforcement entity. (Be careful about copying sections of articles people. You may just get fined $150,000 for each “willful” attempt.)

There is more: Obama Administration Denies Request to Release ACTA Documents.

These documents are related to secretive international negotiations on an intellectual property rights enforcement treaty.

There is little information about the content of this document, but what is known indicates that this Act could impede access to affordable medicine, and it threatens to make non-commercial file sharing over the internet a crime.

http://ictsd.net/i/news/bridgesweekly/43452/

Here is more info on the ACTA. It's pretty scary. This is written from the Canadian's view point, but it explains pretty well what this Act would do for all countries involved, including the US.

Regarding relations with Cuba, which many leaders here urged Obama to improve by lifting the economic embargo, the president said, "The policy that we've had in place for 50 years hasn't worked the way we want it to. The Cuban people are not free." Obama noted progress, citing Raúl Castro's recent statement that his country was willing to discuss human rights issues with the United States. Cuba, Obama said, should free political prisoners, reduces its tax on remittances to the island and grant new freedoms to its citizens as a next step in thawing relations with the United States.

Tens of thousands of letters, e-mail messages and faxes arrive at the White House every day. A few hundred are culled and end up each weekday afternoon on a round wooden table in the office of Mr. Kelleher, the director of the White House Office of Correspondence.
He chooses 10 letters, which are slipped into a purple folder and put in the daily briefing book that is delivered to President Obama at the White House residence. Designed to offer a sampling of what Americans are thinking, the letters are read by the president, and he sometimes answers them by hand, in black ink on azure paper.

No, it isn’t, because America is more than a collection of policies. We are, or at least we used to be, a nation of moral ideals. In the past, our government has sometimes done an imperfect job of upholding those ideals. But never before have our leaders so utterly betrayed everything our nation stands for. “This government does not torture people,” declared former President Bush, but it did, and all the world knows it. And the only way we can regain our moral compass, not just for the sake of our position in the world, but for the sake of our own national conscience, is to investigate how that happened, and, if necessary, to prosecute those responsible.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week said she is working with governors to repeal the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005 and went into effect last year. The bill is popular in Washington, but is scorned by many governors who bear the responsibility and cost of validating that holders of driver's licenses are citizens or legal residents of the United States. Napolitano, former governor of Arizona, said she has met with governors of both parties recently "to look at a way to repeal Real ID." She said she wants to substitute the federal law with "something else that pivots off of the driver's license but accomplishes some of the same goals. And we hope to be able to announce something on that fairly soon."

The 2008 election ended the reign of junk science in our nation’s capital, and the chances of meaningful action on climate change, probably through a cap-and-trade system on emissions, have risen sharply. But the opponents of action claim that limiting emissions would have devastating effects on the U.S. economy. So it’s important to understand that just as denials that climate change is happening are junk science, predictions of economic disaster if we try to do anything about climate change are junk economics.

Two bipartisan panels of nuclear weapons experts are endorsing much of President Obama's ambitious arms-control effort in advance of next week's nonproliferation talks here between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. A congressionally mandated commission will recommend next week that the United States resume the lead in international efforts to prevent further proliferation of nuclear weapons. The U.S. government should declare that it will rely less on such weapons and seek to reduce U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles through extension of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (START), according to the Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States. But, the commission said, it also should maintain "an appropriately effective nuclear deterrent force."

Marian Robinson, President Obama’s mother-in-law, moved into the White House “kicking and screaming,” said her son, Craig Robinson. She had never lived outside of Chicago and was reluctant to leave her beloved bungalow, her friends and family, her weekly yoga class and her familiar routines. But after three months in the Executive Mansion, Mrs. Robinson is unexpectedly and decidedly savoring her new life.
She entertains visitors from Chicago. She attends White House dinners and concerts hosted by her daughter, the first lady, Michelle Obama. She dines at local restaurants and delights in events at the Kennedy Center, where she often sits in the president’s box and chats with performers. In fact, Mrs. Robinson, 71, is so busy these days that the Obamas hired a baby sitter to watch their two daughters one evening because the nation’s first grandmother had plans. “She has a very full social life, so much so that sometimes we have to plan our schedule around her schedule,” Mrs. Obama said jokingly last week during a lunch she hosted for Congressional spouses.

"For the first time, utility companies and corporate leaders are joining, not opposing, environmental advocates and labor leaders to create a new system of clean energy initiatives that will help unleash a new era of growth and prosperity," Obama said.

Obama added: "But we know that our families, our economy, and our nation itself will not succeed in the 21st century if we continue to be held down by the weight of rapidly rising health care costs and a broken health care system. That’s why I met with representatives of insurance and drug companies, doctors and hospitals, and labor unions who are pledging to do their part to reduce health care costs."

Mr. Obama’s call to support genuine democracy has implications for the kinds of elections the international community promotes and endorses. Radical groups can become legitimate political players in the democratic process if they accept core democratic principles and abandon the use of force as a political tool. Or they can maintain armed terrorist militias in order to threaten their neighbors and intimidate their people. The international community should not allow them to do both. Unless such groups are forced to choose between these conflicting identities, their participation in elections not only risks empowering extremists, it risks debasing the values of democracy itself.

The Dartmouth group estimates that up to 30 percent of Medicare spending is wasted on needless care. Although most experts think the Dartmouth research is essentially right, a few believe that other factors, including the health of individual patients, play a bigger role. Even if the over-treatment is less than the Dartmouth researchers believe, their findings point to areas and institutions where Medicare should be able to coax or push physicians to behave more prudently, for all their patients. When President Obama speaks at the annual meeting of the American Medical Association on Monday he will need all of his persuasive powers to bring doctors into the campaign for health care reform. Doctors have been complicit in driving up health care costs. They need to become part of the solution.

Several readers have made intelligent and thoughtful comments that deserve greater depth and a stronger factual basis on the 'under the radar' news that, for the first time in American history, an Army Infantry Combat Brigade has been "deployed" (the Army Times' wording, not mine) onto U.S. soil. The Department of Defense announced in the Fall of 2008 that it was assigning a full-time Army unit to be "on call to facilitate military cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security in the event of another terrorist attack and to help with civil unrest and crowd control."

http://www.examiner.com/x-13927-Dayton-Liberal-Examiner~y2009m6d21-Posse-Comitatus-II-Army-Combat-troops-on-our-streets-should-raise-eyebrows

Since 1878, the military has been forbidden from enforcing the laws on the streets of this country and yet, that is exactly the role they are beginning to assume. In fact, in March of 2009, active duty Army troops from Fort Rucker, Alabama were deployed to Samson, Alabama in response to a murder spree. It is still unclear under what authority they were deployed. The governor of Alabama did not request military assistance and President Obama did not authorize it. There is supposedly an investigation going on to determine possible violations of several federal laws in their deployment for law enforcement.

And some people wonder why gun sales are going up.

Top Republican senators involved in crafting health care reform legislation participated in a health-care specific fundraiser Monday evening. Guests were asked for a $2,000 contribution to the National Republican Senatorial Committee to attend a "Roundtable on Healthcare Issues" -- and $5,000 for both the roundtable and dinner with Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.). The nonpartisan Sunlight Foundation cited the event for its upfront offer of special-interest access. All three senators sit on key health committees. Grassley is the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, currently embroiled in negotiations with Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) over the pending reform bill. Enzi sits on the Finance Committee and serves as ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which Burr is a member as well

This is a president on a mission to remake American society in every aspect, by whatever means are necessary and available. That requires taking all kinds of decisions out of the hands of ordinary Americans and transferring them to Washington elites — and ultimately the number one elite, Barack Obama himself.

Like so many before him who have ruined countries around the world, Obama has a greatly inflated idea of his own capabilities and of what can be accomplished by rhetoric or even by political power. Often this has been accompanied by an ignorance of history, including the history of how many people before him have tried similar things with disastrous results.

Great piece by Thomas Sowell.

This is one brave woman. They give women lashes, if they are caught wearing pants, in Sudan. She was caught, in a cafe, wearing pants. Her employer, being the UN, was ready to protect her - but she has chosen to quit her job, and challenge the punishment in court. If she loses, it's 40 lashes.

A brave woman - and maybe someone who can help her country move forward, challenge the laws there. She wore the same slacks she was arrested for to court - this is someone who is not backing down!

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-healthcare-pharma4-2009aug04,0,3156176.story

Obama gives powerful drug lobby a seat at healthcare table

Reporting from Washington -- As a candidate for president, Barack Obama lambasted drug companies and the influence they wielded in Washington. He even ran a television ad targeting the industry's chief lobbyist, former Louisiana congressman Billy Tauzin, and the role Tauzin played in preventing Medicare from negotiating for lower drug prices.

Since the election, Tauzin has morphed into the president's partner. He has been invited to the White House half a dozen times in recent months. There, he says, he eventually secured an agreement that the administration wouldn't try to overturn the very Medicare drug policy that Obama had criticized on the campaign trail.

Doctors now believe that the bombs were slowly destroying his brain. He was eventually sent back to the U.S., but the full extent of his injuries were never treated, and he ended up committing suicide, police believe.

Calif. farmers say feds make drought worse

By William M. Welch, USA TODAY

Three years into a drought that evokes fears of a modern-day dust bowl, Allen and others here say the culprit now isn't Mother Nature so much as the federal government. Court and regulatory rulings protecting endangered fish have choked the annual flow of water from California's Sierra mountains down to its people and irrigated fields, compounding a natural dry spell. Meantime, the roads along this farm area are filled with signs warning that less water means less food. "If you like foreign oil, you'll love foreign food," says a sticker on Allen's truck.

The rise, to more than one million students without stable housing by last spring, has tested budget-battered school districts as they try to carry out their responsibilities — and the federal mandate — to salvage education for children whose lives are filled with insecurity and turmoil. The instability can be ruinous to schooling, educators say, adding multiple moves and lost class time to the inherent distress of homelessness. And so in accord with federal law, the Buncombe County district, where Charity attends, provides special bus service to shelters, motels, doubled-up houses, trailer parks and RV campgrounds to help children stay in their familiar schools as the families move about. Still, Charity said of her last semester, “I couldn’t go to sleep, I was worried about all the stuff,” and she often nodded off in class.

Carter: Racism plays major role in opposition to Obama

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American," Carter told "NBC Nightly News." "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shares the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans."

"That racism inclination still exists, and I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of belief among many white people -- not just in the South but around the country -- that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply," Carter said.

link (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/09/15/carter.obama/index.html?section=cnn_latest)

Even though Carter is just echoing the far left's 'shift the focus' garbage, for a past president to make such an irresponsible comment is unforgivable. Carter needs to ride off into the sunset, he has obviously lost it.

Does this sound like something a small government, Laissez-faire capitalist, America First, national Sovereignty loving conservative should get behind:

"The G-20 operates without a permanent secretariat or staff. The chair rotates annually among the members and is selected from a different regional grouping of countries. The chair is part of a revolving three-member management group of past, present and future chairs referred to as the Troika. The incumbent chair establishes a temporary secretariat for the duration of its term, which coordinates the group's work and organizes its meetings. The role of the Troika is to ensure continuity in the G-20's work and management across host years."

The "they" is Israel, IMO there was a lot of truth in what Traficant had to say. We complain about the left playing the race card but are there also many playing the "anti-Semite" card in Washington? Traficant's interview with Hannity was good, Hannity lost big time IMO.

TRAFICANT: All right. Let me respond to that. We're in a situation where the commission come out and they discussed the attack on America. There's no doubt about it. But our policies in the Mideast have been so one-sided and subjective, without objectivity, we've created so many enemies the only way we can strike back is we've imported the terrorists from those actions.

HANNITY: Congressman, wait a minute.

TRAFICANT: So if you're questioning it you're saying you're anti-Semite.
