I was unable to watch the trial yesterday. Who showed up for O.J.? family? girlfriend?

I didn't see or hear of anyone mentioned in the courtroom except for Dominick Dunne, who I doubt was there to support OJ.

I have a hard time following the testimony after 5 p.m. but I'm watching IS tv right now and they showed part of Fromong's testimony. Did I hear him right? Did someone in the room say "Put the guns down"? (And OJ was motioning to put them down with his arm while this was said)

If I understood that snippet correctly, there is absolutely no way OJ can claim he didn't know anything about any guns being involved.

Good morning.

I'm going to try to listen to OJ's trial and keep track of Casey Anthony's antics at the same time today, as well as getting my work done. If you hear a loud scream coming from this direction, you'll know my effort failed.

Re: the Goldman's. In order for them to get their hands on the "merchandise," wouldn't OJ have to be acquitted of the robbery charges? If it's decided in court that it was not his stuff, and thus a robbery, they couldn't claim the stuff, imo.

I did hear him say that in the testimony yesterday. Whether or not it happened, I don't know. Seems like it was on the tapes, though.

Just heard on CNN. The Goldman's have filed papers in California to get those belongings O.J. thinks is his. O.J. only wanted that stuff back so the Goldman's couldn't get the money he owes them. O.J. skirting his financial responsiblity will finally work against him in court.

jmo

;)

I wonder what legal penalty, if any, OJ will face for hiding assets and if that will require yet another civil trial? OJ can't have it both way...either he gave Gilbert the stuff to hold for him in order to hide it from the Goldmans or he lied on his notarized statement that essentially said he had no "missing" possessions. My personal opinion is that OJ had Gilbert take the items to hide them from the Goldmans with the "cover story" being that he gave them to Gilbert in lieu of payment for services rendered. I think with Gilbert got tired of paying to store OJ's stuff he decided he wasn't going to do it forever and claimed possession by claiming the "cover story" as fact. I may be wrong, but I think the family photos and truly sentimental items were separate from the items given to Gilbert to hold and that Fromong, if he obtained them, got them from the person who bought the stuff at auction for non-payment of storage. I think OJ's issue with Gilbert was that he expected Gilbert to store his hidden valuables for him forever. OJ doesn't seem to be the kind of man who realizes that storing that stuff for a friend forever would eventually become burdomsome.

Oh I had to put Live-InSession/TruTV on mute, Jami Floyd is on:cuss: I always have to mute her show (I have it on my TV because they often show different camera angles -- and I did watch Eric McLean and his attorney, who did a great job in exonerating him, from what I saw. p.s. it ticks me off when so many assume we are 'always' pro-prosecution. At least I'm not. Though in OJ, most assuredly yes!

I also tried to register with LegalEagle with no success. Jean said Thomas Riccio is also/next on the docket -- even if Fromong is still ill.

Riccio makes more sense to me than forensic investigators!

As far as I know noone is to take the law into their own hands.

There are many ways to deal with returning property without using a gun with a group of thugs.

OJ thinks he is above the law, and he is not.

Further, the property should have been turned over to Fred Goldman, and we didn't see Goldman involved in armed robbery to get HIS property.

OJ should be punished for his role in this armed robbery and kidnapping.
Thats what I thought. Especially after hearing the audio tape. I dont see how he could possibly walk away from this charge.

You never have the right to take the law into your own hands. If the stuff was his, there are two simple choices - call police, and get them to come over - or, if the police aren't game to do it, sue the people in court. An appropriate sting would be to go to that meeting with cameras, take pictures of all the stuff, establishing that these guys had it, then use that in the lawsuit.

I think offshore isn't illegal, by itself. Offshore with intent to not pay taxes, hide assets is illegal - but only the account holder can determine what they do with it. He knew, no doubt, why the accounts were being set up that way - but I doubt Fromong could be considered guilty of accessory unless you can establish that he knew OJ's intent - if even then. Might be only the account holder is at fault.

Prosecutor playing games - "Did Simpson have tunnel vision?" - obviously not something he can answer - he's trying to make the jury find the idea that OJ didn't see the guns laughable - which it is - but playing a game to do so. Much like the defense games played with Fromong trying to make it seem that personal belongings were not memorabilia.

So much complexity for such a simple question. And I wonder if there's a gotcha there. For example - in that transcript - was he being asked about all the stuff - the lithographs, footballs, etc. - or are they talking about the few items that have more personal significance, and his answer relates to that.

And still an irrelevant question - even if he said at one point he would have given it away for free - still doesn't make it OK to steal it.

Yeah, I know - but they were to be back by 1. Just joking around, of course - juries are a bit more inclined to be lax about when they show up, since they don't have a financial interest in the trial. So setting a time a few minutes early isn't a bad thing.

Love the jury asking questions - that should be allowed everywhere. I remember a few trials where the verdict went all wrong because the jury had one question on their mind, and the question was never asked - and had they had that answer, they could have come to a verdict. Stupid simple stuff sometimes, and the attorney thinks it's obvious - but it isn't.

Did I hear Fromong say that he had been taking this drug for eight years? Is it normal to prescribe something this addictive for that long of time?

Some people have to take pain pills for the rest of their lives. This is very common. I didn't hear which opiatts he was on?

Details
09-16-2008, 04:14 PM
Did they say exactly what kind of opium pills he takes? You mean opiate? - and I think the question had to do with something like Oxy-Codone (I know I mangled that name). Which is a fairly strong, but not very rare, painkiller. Some unfortunate people have to be on it all the time.

I hope they don't have some juror who is nuts on the addiction angle. People who are on pain meds have to deal with some prejudices and stereotypes of people who think they are junkies and addicts just because they need the pain meds. People who are in pain like that - the pain med doesn't make them high, hopped up, etc. - it just makes them able to function, normal.

Details
09-16-2008, 04:18 PM
Addiction is always an interesting question on these drugs. They require the drug to function - and some call that addiction - but that's like a diabetic who requires insulin - is that addiction - or simply a necessary medication? There are real risks of addiction if you are overprescribed - which is why sadly many (if not all) chronic pain sufferers tend to be drastically underprescribed by doctors afraid of accusations of feeding an addiction.

But when the medication is used to simply control the pain - not to take the excess that would cause a high - it's not an addiction, and people are routinely managed on it for decades. I've got a cousin with rhumatoid arthritis in her spine and a few other horrible problems (at 18!) - she's on this type of drug, and likely will be the rest of her life.

I bet somebody on that jury is either on , or has in the past been prescribed opiates but it does effect the memory. I agree, hope it doesn't become an issue with the jury.

There's a lot of misinformation out there. For this type of pain, the choice is simple - mind-blowing, unrelenting, pain that cannot be controlled by anything less - or you take something that can be addictive. But nearly any pain med can be addictive if used improperly. If used properly, it's not a problem - it just means someone who would otherwise be curled up in a ball of pain can now function with far less pain.

You don't get put on these meds if something less will cover it. From my understanding (I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV), the buzz that pushes you towards addiction happens when you are taking more of the med than needed. Take enough to dull the pain, and there is no buzz, no nothing that starts addiction. Take an excess, and that is where addiction starts.

Maybe with what you said here, that is why he said he only takes half the prescribed dosage sometimes.I'm sure he knows the risk - and probably wants to minimize everything with those meds.

Oxycontin is a pain med & many people take it without becoming hooked on it. They simply need it to function in life. I have worked in a pharmacy for many years. There are of course people who use and abuse. But, many more, that do not. They worry about becoming dependent. They also worry about being dubbed as an addict. I think that pain management is what Doctor's work for. Fromong kept trying to say he only took what was needed & never more. He said he tried to take less than what he was prescribed. That tells me he is NO addict!

I was summoned for jury duty last December. I was SO excited after spending the summer glued to my chair for the Spector trial. Unfortunately, I had to request excuse due to family hardship. You see, I have a medically fragile child that I care for 24/7 and I don't think the judge would be happy to recess the court while I tubefed my daughter. LOL. I was excused without ever having to report.

But DARN, I sure wish I could have had that opportunity, just once!

And I doubt they'd let you knit or crochet. Although you feel it's mindless, they would say that you would be distracted from the testimony, and you might also be distracting to other jurors seated near you. Wonder about the jury's question today about Oxy. How did they know the extensive side-effects to ask about ?? Sounds like someone looked (researched) the question. Isn't that against jury rules to investigate ??

I only got called for jury duty once - fascinating. Lots of little details, angles being played, etc. - and that was just the jury selection process! One person who appeared to have a vendetta against police but was trying to be selected, some who were trying to get out of jury duty, a prosecutor trying to do the defense's job of eliminating biased jurors as the defendant was representing himself, and (I'm guessing) he didn't want the verdict overturned, etc. The defendant was the most clueless guy possible - accused of drug dealing, and he looked like he'd just come out of wardrobe to be cast as a lowlife drug dealer - greasy slicked back hair, hangdog look, ill-fitting rumpled suit, too much jewelry. Sadly for me (fortunately for him) - he decided to accept representation, so everything had to be restarted, and all of us jurors were dismissed.

the 60mg MsContin is just a dose. you may have been limited to 180mg/day by the doc but that is why morphine is such a good drug to use for acute pain....it has no limit. whatever a person needs to maintain pain control is what they can use. i have had end stage AIDS patients and cancer patients that take 200mg 4 times a day with extra short acting morphine inbetween.

Well when you say there's no limit ... there IS a lethal limit. At SOME point, morphine will kill you. At a high enough dose, it becomes lethal.

there is a nurse on the jury. the question might have come from her. you and i, as nurses, would know what to ask.

Oh boy maybe that's why the defense dwelled on it. Some nurses and doctors think that if you ask for or on prescribed pain pills you have a habit. I hope that juror is not one of those.

Yeah, exactly. He's a fairly normal person, and testifying is always a weird thing, with a bunch of attorneys who are all fighting to tilt your testimony to their direction - it's going to be a strange thing.

I don't know what the point of the testimony is though - this all seems like uncontested stuff. No one seems to be denying (although we haven't gotten to the defense case yet) that OJ went in to the casino with these guys, and left with the stuff.

Details
09-16-2008, 06:34 PM
This is kind of like the testimony of the bellhop yesterday. Yup - they brought the stuff in to the hotel room.
And now -Yup, OJ and his buddies came in. If anyone figures out the point of dragging out undisputed evidence plese enlighten us.The bellhop - they did make one little dinky point - at least he could testify how the victims were very protective of the merchandise - obviously they believed it had a great deal of value - never let it out of their sight.

And, of course, that if OJ had needed assistance legitimately picking up stuff from them, the bellhops would have helped lug the stuff out of the hotel too. So the only reason for the posse was to have guys willing to be threatening and carry guns. Bellhops - in this hotel - I guess don't provide that particular service.

But that one isn't much of a point - even if the bellhop knew he'd help carry stuff out, someone could make the point that OJ didn't know that. Still - showing that these guys did not consider this stuff mere personal junk (the inventory alone pretty well proves that anyway) - it's a little point. Not worth much time, but it is a little point.

The point would be to create a matter of record. Like telling a story, a chain of command. Important if there is an appeal.

I've testified a couple of dozen times as an "expert", and the question I disliked most was "Isn't it true?"

Lawyers know the answer to most every question they are going to ask. Rare are the surprises (with the exception of Dr. Baden's "ah-ha" moment...lol

bearwdsThey did a lot of "Isn't it true" to the victim yesterday, and he kept answering "No" - and they kept acting surprised. I'm not sure if that's because they were bad lawyers who didn't know the answer, or if they wanted to pretend for the jury like he was giving very out of line, incorrect answers about the sports memorabilia business.

It's funny - thinking about past testimony where an attorney was trying to get Fromong to clarify if he thought they were thugs or businessmen - there isn't always a difference. A suit may make you look like a businessman, while your actions show you to be a thug. There's lots of businessmen who are also thugs. And your clothing can be completely gang-banger and your actions can show you to be a good decent person. I'm just thinking that while for the attorney's purposes he's going for "inconsistiency", and trying to portray his client as well as possible, it's a false dichotomy he was pushing.

Where's the CNN feed? The one I'm using has gone to Arnie discussing the CA budget.

You are correct. They are estimating 5 weeks. And if all the testimony is like this ... it will be a very LONG 5 weeks. But won't that put us ready for Spector retrial???

I think PS will start before OJ is over, IIRC. September 22 or 29? I forget which one is slated to start. Hopefully there are no more delays there!

OK, went to KTLA. I was using Google Chrome, and KTLA doesn't like it. So I put it up in it's own IE window.
