sadly, the big bold stuff is gone, quickly as it came. I hope it comes back

If you use the Sizes function you can make anything big and bold.

I actually don't like this appearance..difficult to navigate and very overwhelming..I really enjoy the old board..wonder why they couldn't add security features to the other exisiting board..

I always feel that way when something changes. But, actually, I think In Session was the only board using such an old version of V-Bulletin. This newer version is pretty nice once you get used to it. For example, you can automatically subscribe to threads you post in. Then use Quick Links or User CP (Control Panel) to access them. You can also search within a thread, which is pretty handy if the thread is long. Oh, and your Private Messages status shows at top of the page.

I need to learn to delete my own messages. Hope there's an explanation of how to do that in faq's.
Click on EDIT, click on the DELETE, click on the DELETE MESSAGE on left hand side circle, and then click on DELETE THIS MESSAGE

The new board is awesome...however, I did notice I had to log in again after being away for a few minutes.

Perhaps this is just a glitch that can be taken care of?

Toby did you click the "remember me" box. I had to login too but have left and come back okay after I checked that.

I have one on the "visitor messages"- has this been asked before?

(just got here and seeing the new look for the first time)

are visitor messages viewable when others come to look at a poster's profile thing-

or are they the SAME as a private msg?

Postergeist

okay- I have my answer- just a lot more clicky to do but we still get to have private msg besides the viewable shout out everybody can read it stuff from what I can tell.

Hi Mr Moto!

I noticed on the PMes all those I have had on iggy now show up even tho it's just a line saying I have them on iggy.

On the old board I never knew when I got a PM from a nasty poster.

what do you mean when you say the open forum of visitor messages? What open forum and what visitor messages and viewing by everyone?

I wonder if they are going to offer a class on how to use all these new features, cuz I'm going to need to sign up.

If I click on your name , your NIC , I can see all of the visitor messages and anything you discuss with anyone else . Go ahead click on mine , see what it says , it's open for anyone to read . To make fonts larger on this site, just go to IE's Tools - Internet Options - General - Accessibility and then click on "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages". You may also want to adjust text by going to View and then Text Size to your preference. Hope this help.

I have noticed that I have to log in over and over and over again. Sometimes, I just want to lurk and read posts and trust that I do not have to read the posts on my ignore list.

It is irritating me that my ignore list is not working until I log in again, then again, then again.

I hope this can be fixed.

How do I search for responses made to posts I have made? Sometimes I miss questions or responses, but I search and find them -- now I can't figure it out.

Mr. Moto2
09-09-2008, 06:24 PM
You can now subscribe to threads. You can also set up your account to automatically subscribe to the threads you post in.

For automatic thread subscription:

Click "User CP"

Then click "User Options"

Then under "Default Thread Subscription Mode" click "No email notification" in the drop down box. Or click one of the "email notification" choices if you want an email sent to you.

Finally, click "Save Changes" at the page bottom.

You can keep track of your subscribed threads by going to "User CP" for recent activity, or "Quick Links" for a complete history of your subscribed threads. It really comes in handy.

My 2 cents....
this format is just like most other boards out there BUT can we get an option on the color? There's just not enough contrast for my old eyes to see well.

Just thought I'd throw that out there ;)

Like now, you can't go into 'search' and put Mr. Moto2 and find this response to you.

Now I see what you mean, deep*fear! The searches pick up the posts you've made, but not your quoted posts that another poster responded to...(whew!). Sorry for the misunderstanding. If I find something that helps, i'll post it. Change is good and bad.

Yep...it will be so easy to direct someone to a post you want them to see. Just go to such and such thread...Post # such and such. Easy find! :seeya:

Good job! I don't know how to do any of that bizz but I'm going to try it out myself. :)

size You did good...but you forgot to type something between the open 'size' brackets and the closed 'size' brackets...like I just did (hehe).

color You can add size to this also and make it bold if you like...just make sure everything you type is between the open brackets[ ]and closed brackets [/]. You always need the forward slash in your closed backet.

underline This should be underlined now!

bold I'm feeling bold...am I? LOL

Hey Pebs...check out what I did above. It's easy! You have the right idea...only you forgot to type something. It's not necessary to type the words color, size, underline or bold in the beginning of your message. Hope that all makes sense to you...if not I'll send you a written tutorial to understand it easier.

I also do not like the idea that they do not have a way to let you know what thread or baord you have posted on. without going through a big mess. UUGGHH!!! The old format had a dot . I miss the dot. lol

You can see what threads you posted on. The dot has been replaced with a white arrow that points down.

Same thing happening here Mr. Moto2. I haven't bothered to see if it is something that can be fixed. I might place around with it later.

I have a Firefox extension called No Squint. It will zoom up an entire page, so it can make this message board fill the screen. However, everything is super large and I don't like that effect. You might want to try it though.

keyo
09-10-2008, 03:01 PM
instead of changing your screen resolution you can adjust the browser text display size.

on IE, click on View > Text Size > Largest (for bigger font)
on Firefox, click on View > Zoom > Zoom In (for bigger font)

or just hold the Ctrl key and move the middle mouse wheel button up or down

I would love the answer to that too. I mean aren't you supposed to delete cookies daily?

Nah, no need to delete cookies daily. If you are able to login and post then it means your browser is accepting cookies.

Some security programs (anti-virus, anti-spyware n etc) or browser settings can block cookies.

Mr. Moto2
09-10-2008, 03:09 PM
Thanks, I'll look for it but I probably won't like that either.

Yeah, wasn't for me - it fills the screen but just too big! The No Squint extension is good to have though. It's an easy way of enlarging text size. You can put "up" and "down" buttons on your toolbar for easy access. No Squint can even remember your text-zoom settings of the various websites you visit. I use it more than I thought I would.

There is two ways to see which threads you have posted on. Look on the left of the threads when you go to a board. There is an envelope, if it has a white arrow you have posted on it. Put your cursor on it & it will tell you how many times you have posted on that thread. Also you can subscribe to threads you post on. Those will show up in your user cp.

It's the cookies that allow the board to know who you are and that you can be allowed back on. If you delete all of your cookies this board will not "recognize" you.

I was trying to figure out why you were not tracking. Click User CP you will, find this along the top of the page ( left side of page) next to FAQ, Member list, Calendar, etc. it is on the

Then on the left hand side, under “settings and Options” , click "Edit Options" use the pull down window and select Default Thread Subscription Mode

I thought that was for emailing responses to anyone answering your post...which I DON'T want. Me email had hundreds which I just discovered today!

You click on the multi quote button on the posts you want to reply to, then go down to the last post on the thread at the bottom left and hit the reply button. It will come back with all the posts you want to comment on. Just post your comment after each post, where it puts the end quote mark for that post --> [ / QUOTE ]

It's not all that important, but it helps to know if your message to someone has been read.

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but noticed folks talking about the size, color, font, bold, etc., etc. If it hasn't been mentioned yet... you don't have to mess with the [ ] and [/] anymore at all! someone said green is on line, red is off line (or invisible) and the blue is people who have a laptop and wireless mouse.
This could be accurate or not. Just passing it along.

For myself, I am marked invisible but the light glows red and I can see my name on the forum? But can others?

I see green lights & assume those folks are online - I know not whether visible/invisible

The blue/grey/no light is presumably those offline. I am sure the insession board would have NO idea whether I am a laptop/desktop etc - I am an IP address on the internet.

If other's can see the red light, all it does is tell them I want to be invisible? Not much help! If other's don't see the red light - fine - but do I really need to be told that I am online? I think I know that? Weird.

Hi all,

I may be missing something, but it seems like if I choose threaded or hybrid views, I do not see all the posts in the thread. I don't see a 'next page' or 'more' link either. I really like that view option, but am not using it because of this issue. Could someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong or missing something?

TIA,
BlueHeron :patriot:

Hi, BlueHeron... Just now, I experimented with a thread having 3 pages and learned every post in that thread is given in links in the first window of the thread if I put it in Hybrid or Threaded so in neither of those views is page or page number needed because every comment is in one window.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, but, maybe you missed that all the posts are in those links that are shown. The link shows who made the post and you have to click on it to read it.

I hope this helps.

Here's the one thing that's bugging me now-

I use Firefox with an ad-block feature. With the old board version, the ads were blocked and the message board filled the entire screen. With the new format, the ads are still blocked, but gray spaces have replaced them. So the actual message board is scrunched over to one side of my screen. I feel cramped and confined! This ends up bothering me -- more than it should I guess.

I know others are experiencing the same thing. Has anyone found a way to make the board fill the screen?

Hey all, I used the Adblock extension to block the "In Session" logo at the top of the page. This removed the gray space at the top. The gray space on the right is still there though, so the message board is still scrunched to one side. But at least the top is okay now. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Why would I not get counted among those who "view" a post? If I view a post that has 51 viewers already posted, when I finish viewing and go back to other posts the one I viewed STILL has just 51 viewers, it says. Why do I seem to be "invisible" in posting?

Wonder if this is happening to anyone else. TIA

When you go back to other posts do you actually go back via the back button or do you hit the link at top of the other posts where you were posting? (I hope that makes sense! lol) If you hit the back button, it will never show the additional post and sometimes even if you go back via the link, the current number will still not show unless the page is manuelly refreshed by you.

I've had this happen more than once and wondered about it; therefore have noticed the site will correct later. If I comment, I also want it counted! ha

Thank you again, Alibar. But this thread had 54 views when I came back and found your answer to my question. I went back and it was still 54. So I logged off this message board and came back on and, alas, it was STILL 54. So it wasn't a "refreshing" problem, I think. Was it something else, I wonder?

P.S. I just went back again after writing the above post and it's STILL 54 views - after I logged off and came back and made another post. Ah, me. Sometimes one does feel unnoticed ! :D

I know the feeling! lol However, at least others besides us are being recognized as I see there's over 70 views. There have been time the number of posts I make doesn't change after a new post. Usually, I don't pay attention, but, when the number was approaching 500... that's when it was noticeable.

I like things to operate as expected and, like you, if they don't, I want to know why. Sometimes, I think we just have to accept being in the dark. (I hope that doesn't mean the electricity is going to go out..:chicken: )

I can receive PM's from a poster but they can't receive mine. They do not know why and neither do I.

I'm going to post the message i receive and Coldwater or anyone willing to help can post how to fix this issue. Thank you in advance.

**SCREEN NAME** has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.

If you are trying to send this message to multiple recipients, remove **SCREEN NAME** from the recipient list and send the message again.

sounds to me either he/she needs to go into their settings (control panel) and click the mark to allow pm's from board members. (not just admin)

the only other thing is that their message box is full.
no scratch that, you posted the message you are getting.

whoever needs to go to their control panel, and look at the items in their settings for pm's.

I tried to put someone on ignore and I got this message:

"The user was not found in the database. Please go back and correct this problem. You may want to check out the member list."

How can they post if they aren't in the database?

They can't. Perhaps they deleted their membership and left just before you put them on ignore. Or possibly CW removed them. Then again, possibily the site made a mistake. I never trust such a message without trying again. )))))))

The last couple of days, after I read a thread it still shows as not being read (still bold). Now a week or so ago, it was the opposite, all threads were showing as read even though I hadn't read the new posts.

Is anyone else having this problem?

I have searched this board for an answer and haven't found a post on this subject.

Why is it that I can see on other's public pages the posters that have visited their page, but not on mine.

Par example: joeblow34 has had 123 visitors to this page. Or: janedoe21's last 10 visitors to this page xyzdude, paco, taco, waco, dude, etc...

Go ahead, click on my public profile now, I'll see my number go up but I get NO names like everyone else!

What invisiable option? Where do you find that?

Click on your 'User Cp' at the top left.

Then click on 'Edit Options.'

It's the first option available. :)

For some spelling can be a problem, in this version of Vbulletin there is a spell checker, I don't remember one in the old version. When you start a thread or reply to a post there is a little ABC with a check mark under it in the top right corner of the message box. The first time it will offer a download of IESPELL, it is free for non commercial use and once installed it is great and has saved me some embarrassment many times. It only had to make 4 corrections in this post. No subtle messages to anyone just thought it was a great feature that some may be unaware of.

That sounds so cool, but I don't have an abc with a check anywhere, left or right.

Did you have to sign up for it somewhere? When you're in the message dialog box to post a reply or new thread it will be about 1 " above the right smileys.

I found it, but do I only need to download 1 time to use it every time I post?1 time and since I use IE I also had to download a Microsoft add on something or other but it works great.

I've been using firefox most of the time and it doesn't show up with that. But I just checked with AOL and by golly, there it is.

Thanks. Now I just have to find out how to use the firefox spell check.

IE spell for anyone using internet explorer:

http://www.iespell.com/

Download link is in the list on the left hand side of the page.

Firefox has it right on the tool bar, a little ABC with a check mark. It'll also underline, in red dotted line, and offer suggestions if you misspell in an input box.

Darn, there's nothing like that on the toolbar, but I have most of it closed, it was taking up too much of the page. I'll have to look around more. But thanks interested.

In the tools menu, go to options. In the advanced options check off "check my spelling as I type". I think that's what will give you the red dotted line. It may even give you the ABC check on the tool bar, still checking on how I got that.

ETA: Nope, I'm wrong. To get the ABC check on the tool bar you need to go to View, tool bars & enable to google tool bar. But you don't need it, I never use it, I just like having google at my fingertips all the time. With "check my spelling as I type" you get the red dotted line just like on a word doc or any word processor document.

This is too funny. I am internet Explorer but can't get the PM Poppper Up. I am having a good laugh. Will have Computer Guy fix in June. Thanks. Yes, of course, I believe in apprenice progams but maybe not so much on a bridge.

lol, don't worry, we'll have them dig the holes for the footings. lol

Check my spelling as I type will not work in IE. You need IESpell, but I'm gonna work on getting you to install firefox. You'll enjoy it so much more. I love my tabbed browsing.

You can have an unlimited number of windows open and just click the tab at the top of the window to bring forward the one you want.

No ads on the page, firefox blocks them all, I have to click on an icon to make them show, as if I'd ever. lol

I have IE still on my computer, but I've removed all the shortcuts to it. I have to go into the program list and drag it out if I suddenly lose my mind and think I want to use it. :D

I use Google Chrome as my browser and it has built in spell check. It is also faster than IE. It took a few days to get used to the look and feel of it, but now I love it.

I don't use the Google Toolbar. For me, it slowed my system down way too much.
I liked the way FireFox blocked the ads, but with Chrome, the ads don't slow the system down and I can do things at a much faster pace.

ETA: Also in Chrome, your address bar doubles as a Google search engine. It has a lot of little pluses that i like.

Suggestions for protocol while on a Public Forum

Forums or Bulletin Boards are run by Organizations, Corporations and sometimes just ordinary people. There are expenses that will be incurred such as server, software, networking, and possibly moderator salary costs and this can range from a low of $3,500 per year to over a million dollars per year. The Provider of such a board owns and is responsible for any and all content provided to the public users of that board and usually sets rules and regulations called “Terms of Service” which define their rights and limit their responsibilities to you, the public user. Because of the implications of being responsible for the content and material provided, they retain all rights as to what can and cannot be posted. There is no “Freedom of Speech” applicable to a privately funded bulletin board. You should realize the following points when you join any “Forum” or “Bulletin Board” that the provider will have.

- They will know what IP address you are using to connect to the internet.
- They will know who your Internet Service Provider is.
- They will know the name you assigned to your computer.
- They will know the operating system you are using.
- They will know the browser you are using.
- They can and will edit your posts if they feel it is necessary.
- They can and will move or delete posts if they want.
-

[ETA per cw: The following statements DO NOT APPLY TO THIS FORUM.]

They can and will read “Private Messages”
- They track “page hits” for revenue purposes.
- They can and will reroute you to other servers.
- There are web sites that offer “pay per post” services.
- Not all posters have to be treated equally.

Yes! I agree... I have seen complaints about how advertisements slowed down the board and I sat quietly sitting on my hands because it was off-topic, but surely most people realize these advertisements, including Nissan are what allows us to have a forum in the first place... right? Without the ads and the revenue they generate, how would this board stay open?

Secondly, when we joined, we had to agree to the terms of service, which is especially important on this board because it is linked back to InSession and TruTv... and therefore, linked to Ted Turner's stations, like CNN. Therefore, on some level posters and their posts reflect (indirectly) on CNN and CNN-affliates... so we have to toe the line.. If we don't, we get banned or sent to time out.

For those of you who have been very good and kind with no sharp words for fellow posters, some information.

When you get banned, the next time you try to log on you get a vBulletin message that says:

[QUOTE=vBulletin]
Ban message generated by vBulletin.

You have been banned for the following reason:
o/t harass- (The "offending" message I wrote which I will not repeat again for fear of BGG's life)

"Never" ban's will delete all of your posts since day 1.
If you get a valid date, the ban will disappear on that date.
If "never" is not there nor is there a date, you must message the moderator (Coldwater) with flowers and nice words on why you will never do it again.

Hi, GollyGee. Your list is quite interesting. But does that list go with every message board site out there? Do they not differ a bit from site to site?
For instance: About the private messages...I know that on some sites, they are readable by the powers that be but I don't think that goes for all sites.

GeeLois
11-23-2008, 04:30 PM
Reading Private Messages might not be allowed to the security level of Moderators, but according to my understanding of Homeland Security rules and regs, any message board that crosses national boundaries must have a mechanism to allow authorized security agencies to view those for terrorists messages. I tried to PM this to you but your PM's are turned off.

So all will KNOW and understand - we cannot read your PM's.
(and don't care to) PM's therefore are not moderated in any form, we have no control over them, however that does not mean you can not be reported to Cyber Crime by the poster.

incidentally
11-26-2008, 08:11 PM
Don't join private boards that have been started by members of this board, generally a result of resentments against the moderator or other posters.

As the now banned OP said, they can find out a lot about you and make your life miserable, whether deserved or not.

I trust this board. I don't trust any private board that became an "offshoot" of CTV/IS.

I stopped posting on a board a month or so ago after I found out it was set up when posters thought this board was to be shut down and that my anonymity had been compromised on private sub forums they apparently have set up over at that board.

I'll stay here. CW keeps us safe as long as we keep ourselves safe.

Tally

On the old boards the only alternatives to use as a warning to posters about their posts was to either give them a time out or to ban them permanently.

Mods now have the option of banning a poster for a limited time of 1 day to 2 years & post a reason. This eliminates the poster having to write to the mod. asking for reinstatement and/or reason. This will probably be used more in the future as it saves time answering PM's and time for posters not having to request reinstatement. Requesting that previously was necessary as we had/have no way of keeping
track of who is/was in 'time out'.

Snipping is actually encouraged when you are replying to a long post, just snip the part you are replying to and mark it "snipped".

DO NOT SNIP IN THE MIDDLE OF A SENTENCE
DO NOT SNIP IF IT CHANGES THE CONTEXT OF THE ORIGINAL POST.

A simpler way is to not quote at all, address the poster by name and refer to their post number to reply.

Also posters who repeatedly quote a post that has been quoted 2 or 3 times above theirs is ridiculous and in the future may be deleted as editing to take out the quote is time consuming.

Coldwater
11-27-2008, 07:26 PM
If you would like to quote another user, please click on the QUOTE button found at the end of each post. Please be careful NOT to remove the starting and ending quote tags (these are the brackets that appear at the beginning and end of the text you are quoting).

Correct quotes will always appear in a quote box in a given post. Incorrect quotes will display the quote brackets outside of the quote box. Incorrect quotes will contain something like this [QUOTE=somename...

DO NOT QUOTE A POST THAT CONTAINS AN INCORRECT QUOTE.

Please be sure to follow these instructions as failure to do so may result in having your privileges revoked.

Some places allow free linking...no photobucket needed:
http://bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htm

But be aware that linking img tags from some sites is stealing bandwidth and unless
clearly allowed one should not do it.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, where the "posting rules" appear you
can see that [img] code is ON...

I didn't think this site allowed graphics...before. Perhaps something has changed?

This bears repeating from old thread:

It is NOT A RULE that you must use the above acronyms in your post unless you are making a positive statement about something you have no proof for that could be incriminating. IE: he/she killed her; he/she was arrested; he/she is a prostitute; he/she killed before; he/she said "xxxx".

Any of those can be libel. This is an opinion board so everything you write is considered your opinion. On incriminating statements without proof it is ADVISABLE (and may be deleted if you don't) use the words "I think" or "I believe" or "In my opinion", etc. To keep putting IMO, JMO, MOO after your posts really means nothing, as putting it in your location or sig line means nothing. It's takes up space.

Any questions PM me. Thank you.

The subject title does NOT have to be the title of the article it is linked to.

The subject title WILL BE DELETED OR CHANGED if it does not reflect what the article states that it is linked to.

Some threads are merged and therefore the subject title may not match the first post but is on a related subject.

This part of your comment, as far as it refers to Tru or IS boards is completely wrong.

Here, we delete if posts or threads break rules or are so old or no hits after a period of time, first we move them to archived, then delete when they get old w/no new news or new posts started on other forums re: same.

We merge to combine "like" subjects to keep all info on one thread, makes it easier for posters to read w/o hunting or searching on all threads for same info.

Editing is done if TOS are broken, copyright rules are not followed,
unacceptable comments or words or personal info is included.

This is a privately owned site so Freedom of Speech does not apply, you follow the site's rules, & your common sense is a good rule, you don't have to stay here and you don't pay for use of same.

4. Click on "Edit Options."
5. Under "Messaging & Notification" you will see a section that says "Default Thread Subscription Mode." Go down to "No Email notification" and then scroll down to "Save Changes."

Every Holiday all forums but Games & Amber Alert are closed, sometimes Sports is open depending on the Season.
All the closed forums can be discussed under their separate threads started by any poster. If the threads get full or change to next daily, the previous thread is MOVED to their topic thread where they can be read at any time.
At the end of the Holiday all threads with their own specific forum are MOVED BACK to their original topic forum.
During the Holiday all 'closed' forums are still able to be read but not posted on.

Insignificant threads or miscellaneous topics or Holiday topics are not moved but left on the Holiday forum which is then closed and moved to the Archive boards for a period of time so posters can either request one of them be moved to open forum to continue conversation or the Holiday Forum will be deleted after a reasonable length of time.

All Rules apply to the Holiday Forums and you can still be put on time out, denied access or banned if any are broken.
