This is one topic that I've been very interested in, since I was clinically 'dead' for a few minutes from a car accident. This was waaaay back in the 70's and I was a young teenager.
I didn't see any lights or travel to another place, I missed the 'otherside' experience. I have to say now that I feel cheated to some degree by this ( I can't explain why), but I do believe that I had an out of body experience (unconscious, but remember 'seeing' MYSELF and a man who had stopped to help... I later described the scene and the man to a T. It seemed that I was watching this all go on from above the accident scene and could tell that I wasn't seeing it from the ground where I was lying. I was told by everyone who was at the accident , that I had no visible signs of life. The docs told me that for all practical means and purposes, I was dead for a little while.
The EMT was able to revive me on the way to the hospital. (My air had been cut off by a bone that had pressed up against my windpipe). When they got this bone back into place they were able to bring me back. The tech had started to do a tracheotomy when the bone dislodged.
The EMT's were communicating with the hospital enroute and told them that they couldn't respirate me because something was blocking my airflow. The hospital told them to hang in there and keep trying to unblock whatever was causing this and advised the tech that if he didn't get a quick response to go ahead and do the trach on me. Once the EMT was successful with the blockage, he started CPR and I was breathing (with a respirator) when we reached the ER.
I was unconscious for awhile, but had only minor problems afterwards. I had some amnesia, but was treated for that and have only a few blank periods from when I first woke up. I probably don't remember a lot of what happened the first six months after I was released from the hospital, but VERY clearly the last thing I remember was the guy and the scene (and comments made) at the accident.
BTW, the EMT who was attending to me, was someone whom I had gone to school with. He told me later that he was so afraid that he was not going to be able to help me at all. But, in fact, he ended up saving my life!! He got very emotional AFTER all of this and called me every once in a while for a few months, just to say 'hi'.
Sorry, I think this is the first time I've actually put all of this into writing, so it may not seem clear. I'm almost in tears thinking about it.
I've read 'Into The Light' and also these. They are very reassuring for anyone who might have some doubts or concerns about what happens after death.

I was hoping you would see this and you're very welcomed. I left out the most important part though (I think) which is that during the time I was 'watching' everything go on, I don't remember being afraid or feeling any pain.
I have used this 'memory' to get me through some tough times when someone near and dear to me would pass. I really don't know if it is your brain/body's defense to feeling all the pain I had to be in at the time...I was thrown through a windshield...or if it is truly God's way of comforting the 'dying' and removing all the sensations of pain or maybe even anxiety some might have at the moment the body shuts down (for lack of a better term, sorry).
All I know is that it is a true memory, that much all the docs agreed with. Some of them just more or less said that it was an unexplained phenomenon that an oxygen deprived brain created under the stress the body was going through.
I believe we all eventually (literally) 'rest in peace' I believe that with all my heart. I hope your daughter finds some comfort, we all need that.
Thank you Shells.

When I lost my mom in 1991, I read many books on this subject...
out of all - I would recommend "Life after Life" by Raymond Moody.
It starts off explaining that he did a "study" - names the number of people in the study and the "common" events that happened between them - it is factual but not boring or too scientific to understand or stay interested.
That book brought me more peace during that time than anything else I could have done.
I no longer have my copy - I shared it with someone years back who failed to return it to me - if I still had it I would have glady passed it on to you.
If you are able to find a copy - I would highly recommend it.
(ISBN 0817714233) - this will help in searching.
All the best.

Here is the info on the book from Wikipedia:
Life After Life : The Investigation of a Phenomenon—Survival of Bodily Death is one of three books about near-death experiences (NDEs) written by Dr Raymond Moody.
In 1992 the book was made into a film of the same name, Life After Life, [1] for which Moody won a bronze medal in the Human Relations Category at the New York Film Festival.
One of the first to investigate and name the "Near Death Experience", Dr. Moody writes an intelligent and objective report on his initial studies (approximately 150 cases) of the phenomenon. This book is without the preaching and interpreting that fills many books on this subject. According to Moody's research there are 9 "points" or events that recurrently appear in the "NDE"s that he has researched. Not one person experienced all 9, some experienced only 2 or 3 while others experienced as many as 5 or 6. This "model" experience is described point by point using extensive quoting from people who have nearly died or "died" and been resuscitated.
Moody wrote a second book, Reflections on Life After Life (ISBN 0817714233) in 1977. In it, the number of recurring points increased to 15.

Scully ...thank you for sharing your story. I am glad it wasn't your time and you didn't leave this life at that time.
My friends grandmother passed for a brief time (years back) at the hospital and was revived. She talked often afterwards of her Husband standing on a hill...holding the child they lost when he was two years old.
I often wonder if that was a "dream" or imagination...or if that is what was "up there" waiting for her.
I wonder too...who will be waiting for me when I get there :D
