:(

Oh, my gosh. This is terrible.

It says the teacher's union is defending her, saying she just snapped. That doesn't seem like much of a defense. And the spokesperson for the Indiana State Teachers Association asked what you should do with a kid that acts out (listing some behaviors she attributes to the child), like the kid deserved it. Again, it doesn't matter what the child did...you don't do what she did. If the Teachers Association is trying to justify this behavior, I am a little scared.

The parents say they tried to meet with the teacher about the child's behavior.

I understand a teacher might lose her cool, but there should be zero tolerance for this kind of thing. And in this case and the other, it wasn't just the teacher having a momentary blowup. She went on and on and then involved the whole class. Even if she lost your cool, you'd think she would have regained it a lot sooner.

I had already heard this one before I got into the other thread (the 5yo voted out of class). What is wrong with these people?

As my pastor always says...he will be on you if he ever hears you call your child stupid, ignorant or pathetic. You don't say these things to a child.

I realize teaching is not an easy job. But certain words, like cuss words, you don't go around saying in your classroom. These words should be added to that list.

Making him stand there while she makes the class tell him they don't want to be his friend. Geeze Louise. Like I said in the voted out thread about that boy...I'll bet there is alot more kids verbually abused by their teachers. It's a darn shame.

:rose: For all these little kids who have to trust in adults.

I think every parent of a child in school should start to be suspicious now when they say their teacher is mean to them. Thank goodness that once he started to act out at home they decided to see if what he said was a reason and gave him a tape recorder.

Obviously its not just a 'well all kids think teachers are mean when disciplined" throw away statement any longer.

What really infuriates it me, is that in both cases these were "well respected and liked teachers"

So much for what you need to be a respected and liked teacher.

And its not just "losing her cool" as the union says. It had been going on for months according to the child, its why the parents gave him a tape recorder. The union expects us to believe that she never said things like this before, it just so happened to occur on a day when he had a tape recorder?????????

you know in the other thread case i thought perhaps the OP was going a little far when she connected it to school shootings etc.

However if this is a pattern that is occurring in schools, to little children, i can see a connection. When you have the authorities (and to kids teachers are as authority as police) telling you that you are pathetic and useless etc., encouraging other kids to bully you and say the same sort of things, implicitly saying its ok to behave like this, im not surprised that a few kids self esteem is so damaged that they become seriously sick and twisted enough to see shooting your peers and teachers as the only way out. Especially when most of them won't be getting the help this family is going to get him.

Its an important age, for developing empathy and caring..both for yourself and others. Its a two sided coin, if you don't have it for yourself its hard to have it for others and vice versa.

These teachers are STOMPING on that very ability that is needed to grow healthy adults. Normally it will result in addiction problems, sexual acting out and the more normal things we see. However its not hard to see that if its year after year (most kids go to the same school for years so don't escape that enviroment) a small minority will not be able to overcome it. Suicide is ever increasing among kids, as is violence at school IMO they are the same root, anger and hate. Whether to yourself or reflected out onto others.

Its disgusting and i just don't believe with 2 cases in the news now there are not hundreds more where the kids don't tell or the parents don't understand what "mean to me" means when they do.

imo

:flamemad: This teacher is pathetic! There is no excuse for her behaviour. I don't give a hoo-ha what that 5 year old little boy did. I cannot begin to fathom how the parents feel. I am scared to even think of what DH or myself would have done had this been one of ours.

Anyone ready for some pure irony?

The New Albany-Floyd County Education Association has filed a grievance on behalf of the teacher, who was suspended pending an investigation. The grounds? How she was treated. They say the contract calls for teachers to be treated "with respect and human dignity."

See? Irony.

this is outrageous!!! (and ironic)

wtf does that union think its doing??? supporting this behavior is insane, i guess the message is that teachers can abuse little children as young as 5 to their hearts content and to make it public is not showing respect.

I agree, VC2. Another thing that bothered me is that the same person who was interviewed about the grievance and complained about the way the teacher was treated said something like, What would you do with a kid who's biting, punching, etc?. It's in the article somewhere.

To defend a teacher who is clearly in the wrong by maligning a child who had taken so much abuse from this teacher his parents had to have him tape the class--that's just disgusting. Maybe the kid did all that, but he's still a child. Yeah, the parents went to the press, so she may have felt justified in going public with information about the child, but it still doesn't sit well with me.

The teacher was only suspended pending an investigation for something she's on tape doing, and they're fighting it. How can anyone hear that and want her back in the classroom?

Just take a look at how the reporter wrote his story in your link.

"spoken to harshly"

HUH? not even a quote, anyone reading it would think that the kid was sent to the corner and told that pulling a girls pigtail was naughty.

Not that he is pathetic, ignorant, thrown it all away, done.

grrrrrrr

What is really scary is other teachers and the state association seeing NOTHING wrong with her actions!!! "She probably lost her cool." HUH???? TEACHERS aren't supposed to lose their cool. Their job can certainly be tough, and they are human, but it's THEIR JOB to not lose their cool in front of their students. They can get stern, send the student out, walk into the hall for a few deep breaths, ask for someone else (even a secretary can "sit" for a few minutes) to watch the kids---but it is NEVER "OKAY" for a teacher to treat a student of any age this way.

Self-absorbed? What FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD isn't self-absorbed, for Pete's sake!!!!

So, she's had trouble w/him all year? Enough that it must have been discussed in the teacher's lounge. But not enough to take the time set down for the conference w/the parents to do an IEP? When it was her suggestion in the first place?

And, just like the other one---instead of dealing w/it privately (altho one would hope she still wouldn't have used that tactic in a private session) she has to involve all the little 5 y/o's who don't have a clue what is happening. She's not only messing this kid up big time, she's doing a number on the others, IMO, setting an example that it's okay to gang up on one little kid.

Being suspended (and most likely WITH PAY--a nice little PAID vacation from her so vexing duties as a teacher) is not respectful and dignified? THAT is how it is set up, if she was suspended w/o pay or out and out fired--they'd have a problem w/that too, I am sure. What did they expect? That it would be quietly swept under the rug and let her go on? When that little boy isn't there to be her whipping boy, she'd soon enough pick another kid to treat that way--no one will EVER get me to believe there aren't other kids in that class who act up.

Wonder how much his actions got worse over the course of the school year JUST BECAUSE of the way she treated him? He's a 5 y/o kid, for pete's sake. He doesn't have the ability to handle this type of behaviour toward HIM, IMO.

And, maybe she didn't want to bother with the meeting w/the parents to change his behaviour---maybe she enjoyed treating him like sh$$. Just wondering, of course.

There's a petition started to have the teacher held accountable who stood the five year old in front of his class, had his classmates say what they disliked about him and took a vote to kick him out. Here's the

I have the utmost respect for the parents of that little boy because had that been my child, I would have gone ballistic on that teacher. I cannot believe that anyone would defend her actions.

Talking to a child like she did could have lasting consequences on that poor kid's psyche. She has no business in that profession whatsoever and I hope to God that she doesn't have kids of her own.

I cant believe what I just heard! Im stunned, Im disgusted, discouraged, there arent enough words in the dictionary to describe what Im feeling right now.

How does anyone with any compassion treat a child the way these teachers are treating these little boys. Anyone with half a brain knows how damaging things like this are to children.

Does anyone have maybe another link to this recording?

I went to the link and got the story, but there was no place to hear the recording. I temporarily disabled my PopUp blocker, and even went directly to the GMA site, but still could not find the recording...

I think what this so-called teacher & the one in FL did is absolutely unforgivable, and that neither should ever be allowed to work with or around children again.

TIA for any help with hearing the recording! :seeya:

That was my exact thought yesterday. Then there's no question of "little Johnny bit someone" and you called my child "ignorant and pathetic".

It would be in the best interests of the children and parents, for parents who believe their child does no wrong, and for children who have teachers verbally abusing them.

No ~ there's a big blank white space to the left of the story when I pull it up, with the words "A recording catches a teacher berating a kindergartener" underneath the blank space.

I assumed that's where the video/recording SHOULD be, but for some reason it isn't... That's why I tried disabling the popup blocker, thinking maybe that would work - but no luck.

There's a video link on this page. (http://www.whas11.com/education/stories/whas11_topstory_080527_recording.3444fc17.html) It's not the same as the GMA one, but there's overlap. This one has the little boy speaking, which will break your heart. The teacher sounds really, really calm when she asks the kids if they want to be in class with them and tells him his friend doesn't want to be with him.

This video doesn't have the teacher saying, 'You're done. You've lost everything. You're done" That really chilled me.

I hope it works for you.

One year I was hired to handle a difficult class of 2nd graders. There were 12 kids and 3 were beyond help. I remember one in particular that when I would say the spelling words, he would either spell it aloud or say a rhyming word.

He spent most of the day jumping on and off of his desk.

But at no time, did I feel the need to call the little boy names and belittle him.

Teacher's are supposed to be understanding and helpful.

What an *ss. (MOO)

It's insane. I posted yesterday about the grievance. What's so rich is that the spokesperson, who is so concerned about the treatment of the teacher, made specific allegations about the child's behavior to the press. Now, I know the parents went to the press, but that doesn't mean a child should be maligned, especially not with someone with an education association, publicly. She said he bites, hits, etc. She could have simply said the behavior was bad or something, but she made specific charges.

And the icing on the cake was that the spokesperson also said that by suspending the teacher (who we hear verbally abusing a child on and one), the school violated the teacher's contract, which says teachers must be treated with "with respect and human dignity."

I actually noodled around the education association's website a little. They talk about children needing support, but they're supporting an abuser and vilifying a child. IMO.
