UPDATE:

Candle-Light Vigil Held For Missing Woman

POSTED: 10:46 pm EDT April 27, 2008

GASTONIA, N.C. -- With no signs of a 22-year old who has been missing for weeks, a distraught family is trying to keep hope alive. Jamie Fraley mysteriously disappeared 19 days ago. Sunday night, her family and friends met here at First Free Will Baptist Church and held a candle-light vigil.

Fighting back tears, Kim Fraley, Jamie's mother, led family and friends in prayer.

“If I didn't have the support of these people, I think I would have already fallen apart,” she said.

The 22-year old went missing nearly 3 weeks ago. Police believe she may be in danger. Her keys were left inside her Gastonia apartment. Her cell phone was found miles away from her place.

Hope she’ll be found alive is fading for her family.

“If you have a death in your family or something like that at least you know what happened, but this here, honestly, it gets worse everyday,” said her stepfather Gary Ray.

But Ray said prayer has kept them positive. Ray said every worse case scenario has run through his mind a hundred times, but there's always a glimmer of hope.

He said each morning they wake up, they hope it’s the day their daughter is found, the day their prayers are answered.

“And it goes on and on and on, and then you have to face the reality, it could go on for days, it could go on for weeks, it could go on for years,” said Fraley.

Family members said police have received several tip calls of possible sightings, but none of those calls have lead to anything solid.

Good morning Leather&Lace

In a strange way the fact that Jamie is off her meds is good news.

last fall I helped out in the search effort for a 17 year old girl from my home town, Meghan Roberts.

Meghan is Bi-polar and was not taking her medication at the time. A guy talked her in to leaving. In talking to her dad during the course of the search I found that those who are Bi-polar II can lose focus and wander, they are also easily lead by others.

28 days later she was located in New Jersey. she had traveled through 4 states and was in bad shape but alive. After a number of days in the hospital and the reestablishment of her medication she was fine.

As Jamie is not taking her medication she may well have done the same thing, wandered off. But without her meds she will be easy pray if she comes into contact with a evil person.

Hi Maelstrom. You make a very good point about how people suffering from Bi-polar II often act. I have a friend whose husband was recently diagnosed and is still not taking his meds as he should. He becomes paranoid and disappears and is terrified of anyone finding out where he is. I pray Jamie is safe and is found soon.

I just read this - Jamie Fraley went missing from GASTONIA NC on 4/8, just a month prior to the Yarmolenko murder... Gastonia and Mt Holly are right next to each other.

Hi USACQ,

I just found this story today. We have two women missing and one unsolved murder of a woman in very close proximity. There is not enough information yet to connect the three but it sure seems like local LE has their work cut out for them.

Gastonia Police seek help in finding woman who went 'missing out of thin air'

May 28, 2008 - 10:34AM
Kevin Ellis

A 42-year-old Kings Mountain woman has been missing since early May and Gastonia Police are asking for the public's help to locate her.

Jennifer Ramsey Rivkin of 110 Matthew Drive in Kings Mountain, was reported missing after the BMW she was driving was found May 6 at the Winner's Circle Bar & Grill at 2533 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia. Jennifer's purse was still in the car.

A friend last heard from Rivkin through a cell phone message on May 4. Friends and family have been unable to reach her on her cell phone.

Police have no leads on her whereabouts, said Gastonia Police Detective Michelle Smith.

"It's like she went missing out of thin air," Smith said.

Rivkin is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 130 pounds. She has brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information about Jennifer's whereabouts is asked to call Detective Smith at (704) 866-6976.

Is Gastonia near where they found Irina Yarmelenko's body a couple of weeks ago? If so, is there any reason to think the two cases could be connected? How large is Gastonia?

Gastonia is considered part of the Charlotte Mecklenburg area and is quite a large place...maybe just a little under a 100 thousand people..(?) and is only about 10 miles from Mount Holly.

I hope that helps. I am not an atlas but that is the best I recall about the area. I grew up about 70 miles from Charlotte. Someone who lives closer may better answer your question since I am about 400 miles from there now:shrug:

Gastonia isn't terribly big, but it's not a tiny town either. There hasn't been anything at all in the news about this woman's disappearance, and barely anything about Jennifer Rivkin. The place they found Ira's body isn't far from there, but I haven't heard any local speculation about a connection. Ira's murder seems to have dropped out of the news within the last few weeks too, sadly. (I'm from a suburb of Charlotte - not Gastonia though.)

Thank you, barefoot. I also had noticed there hasn't been any new information about Ira. Last I heard they were talking about how they knew she didn't leave town alone. I wonder if they are following up that angle and that's why it's been quiet.

There were some things on the late-night news over the past few weeks about breaking news on Ira's case, but I never caught the stories - I was asleep before the news and there was nothing in the newspapers the next day.

It's unsettling to hear about local missing women through a website like this and realize that it's not in the local news at all! I've never felt particularly unsafe since moving here, but I worry after hearing about these women. I hope there's good news for Jamie soon.

If I'm not mistaken, the Charlotte Observer also reported today that the car (with the dead man in the trunk) was found parked at the same apartment complex where Jamie lived. I'm assuming it was Jamie, at least - it was an apt in Gastonia and the article mentioned "where a woman disappeared from in April."

That's an awfully creepy coincidence...

Here (http://www.wcnc.com/news/topstories/stories/wcnc-060808-sjf-gastoniabodyintrunk.125921ce.html) is the link to the story I read earlier. The part I was thinking of says, " They won't say what that is but they do say both the victim and his ex-girlfriend recently lived at an apartment complex on Lowell-Bethesda Road, the same place where a missing Gaston County woman was last seen."

The article mentions that the guy was found dead in the trunk of an ex-girlfriend's car, but there's no mention of a connection with Jamie aside from the apartment complex.

Hi barefoot,

It seems that the man whose body was found son dated Jamie.

It to early to know if there is any connection, but here is one possible scenario:

Ricky Simmonds Jr. gets into a violent argument with Jamie which results in her murder. Either he has his father help him hide her body or his father somehow learns about what he has done.

Whichever is the case, Jr. starts to worry about dear old dad cracking and telling the police what he knows. So its becomes necessary for dad to vanish also. Something goes wrong and he needs to get ride of dads body right away, he places it in the trunk of the ex-girlfriends car in a effort to point the finger in her direction, not his.

Yes, it is hers. I looked on it a couple weeks ago, and at that time, one of her friends made a reference to "looking for Jamie" in her myspace name.

Yes, and I'm not sure why, unless she was planning to be married soon or something. Lots of people lie on their myspace pages....about age, location, etc., for different reasons....?

Hi all,

That’s definitely Jamie's MySpace page. The pictures in the picture section match some of those used in news stories about her.

This quote from Jamie’s blog is prophetic;

Saturday, April 21, 2007

The voice unheard

The rooms are now empty,
your voice not a word,
how we long for the voice unheard.
a part of my childhood, my longtime friend,
we long for the day you are home again.
taken for granted are the simplest things,
the sound of your voice and the joy it brings.
now as days pass
and we hear not a word,
we long for the voice that goes unheard.

Hi Breazy,

I just found this. It does not sound to me like Jr. was behind bars.

Ricky Dale Simmons, Jr

"Jamie Fraley’s disappearance was just weird. She had the stomach flu and had been to the hospital twice already on the April evening she went missing. She was trying to get a third ride to the ER, but her boyfriend, Ricky Dale Simonds Jr., said she never showed up. Her purse, keys and ID were found in her locked apartment, and her cell phone was found on the side of a local road two days later. No sign of Jamie has been found."

I guess Ricky Jr. could just be repeating something he had been told. I will keep searching but read this story it has some interesting information, Jamie had a number of MySpace accounts.

Found it,

Ricky Jr is in the clear, but Sr. is a person of interest.

"Simonds Jr. was never a suspect in Fraley's disappearance because he was incarcerated at the time she vanished. He was released from state prison April 29 after serving a 16-month sentence for larceny of over $1,000."

The updated story does not mention the above information but it was stated in a previous update.

Texas EquuSearch is heading to North Carolina on Thursday, October 16 to begin searching for Kelly Morris in Stem, NC, Mouy Tang in Cleveland County, and Jamie Fraley and Jennifer Rivkin, both from Gastonia. The search for Kelly Morris has been ongoing with her family and friends, and will continue and hopefully get larger with the addition of Texas EquuSearch resources. It will be ongoing this weekend, and the need for volunteers is great

Hi omsk99,

This story is heartbreaking; but oh so familiar. Today I got an e-mail from Tammy Cox the aunt of Brianna Maitland, missing 3/19/04; Montgomery, Vermont. She sent me a news report about Bri that was recently featured on CNN. It had several statements that were not correct and others that were misleading.( I sent the reporter a message about that fact)

But the bottom line was that Tammy and Bri's parents Bruce and Kellie, along with her older brother Waylon were overjoyed that after all this time someone still remembered Bri.

For those interested; Brianna's picture and story.
