I must say, I havnt heard about this place. Media is saying its "a darker place". Looks like trials are coming up. This is a HUGE sect....It is WORLDWIDE !!!!!
I thought this particular sect needed its own thread with the trials coming up and such. This will "test" Texas is what folks are saying.

This link has an aerial shot of this sects property (s) as well as a couple of photos of the group's leader, Yisrayl Hawkins.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/13/yaweh.polygamy.ap/index.html (more details at link)

A 7-year-old died in 2003 after her mother and another member performed home surgery on her infected leg. Both women were convicted of injury to a child.
And in 2006, a woman bled to death after giving birth because she was prevented from going to the hospital, according to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by her husband.

(more details at link)

Mr. Hawkins also faces a misdemeanor charge of breaking child labor laws, accused of having up to 40 children working weekdays "in the fields, in a canning operation, in a cafeteria and in the butter making process."

Another member, elder Yedidiyah Hawkins, is expected to stand trial this summer on charges of aggravated sexual assault of his now 14-year-old stepdaughter, a girl who authorities allege he was planning to make his wife.

*************** Has anyone seen photos of BOTH of these Hawkins guys. There is 2 men with the same last name on diff. charges.

Please post if youve seen both of them. I may have missed them. Im not feeling well today.

Prayers for the Children

I know that where this one and the FLDS are located are somewhat desolate areas...you have small towns and farming communities where they tend to leave you alone if you keep to yourself and don't stir up problems. JMO:shrug:

they compared this guy to David Koresh and Jim Jones. Also talked only about him coming to trial this fall for Child Labor Law violations and bigamy, didn't hear anything about child molestation (but I got a phone call in the middle)

There is supposed to be more coming up about it with Shep. At least that is what he said.

Yeah, the nuclear baby.
:D

The woman Shep interviewed wasn't very informative. Sounds like she and hubby split the cult scene when the leader decided they should have plural wives.

Along with all of the other reasons, I'd guess that it's relatively close to the Mexican border in case they needed a quick escape from being arrested?

A lot of the books about polygamy that I've read say that they move to Mexico to escape the laws of the US.

Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Texas and a other locations as well. But you're right, they seem to have a stronghold in the south and mountain west states.

There are probably lots of reasons. I few I'd guess at would be (in the case of the FLDS sect) proximity to Salt Lake City. Also there's lots of land, much of it remote, in those states. Lots of growth and activity - especially in Nevada, Arizona and Utah - that might help the sects stay under the radar (vs., for example, moving to a well-established, built up area of the country). [/*]
I agree. I think that is also why we are seeing these groups expanding into rural areas of Mexico.

Any organized group determined to break the law - meth labs, marijuana farmers, fanatic polygamists, white supremists committing federal weapons violations, whoever - needs to set up somewhere remote to avoid detection. Also, if you plan to indoctrinate and exploit your children then you need to keep them isolated from society.

I don't think they would go after them if they didn't sanction them.....

Heading out tomorrow to Abilene for my uncle's funeral...will be interested to see what they think of all this. My mother's opinion will be "they're just all nuts.":D

I don't think Mexico sanctions them (hugely Catholic country) - but there are corrupt police, lax laws, and the ability for money to buy a compound and some immunity, I think is the idea.

I don't know if this is the reason why but I do know that when I was a Child and lived in the mormon community of Mesquite, NV, which my ancestors settled, only our sheriff could arrest us.

It is located on the 3 corners of UT, AZ & NV, we use to go up to the old airport... which wasn't nothing more then a long strip of desert that straddled the NV & AZ state lines, to party.

Mesquite only had one sheriff back then (RIP Morrison) and if he was to come up there we only had to step across the state line and be in AZ & would not be arrested for our under aged drinking and pot smoking.

Later they came up with this tri sheriff thing that sheriff's from all 3 states could arrest us no matter what state we stood in.

Colorado City & Hillsdale also straddles two states, UT & AZ.

Sly
who did not get arrested back then

Groups like this have been around for years and years and years.

Go to Amazon.com and search polygamy in the book section. You'll find a lot of interesting reading.
