Sorry, but that article seriously set off my BS meter. I've yet to see any reputable news article stating that the kids were kidnapped. And, if I had kids old enough to be worried about the government removing them from me for "no reason," I'd take the time to explain that, no, honey, in this case, there WAS reason to move them to someplace safe until the problems could be fixed. So, a mother that let her son go to sleep afraid, when just reasonably explaining the situation, in small words that he could understand, doesn't impress me. At all.

Set off my BS meter too.
There are a ton of things on TV & in the real world that could realistically be misinterpreted by children, every single day. It is the job of the parent to make some judgments beforehand on what their child is exposed to via TV. I can't imagine why the news would be considered appropriate viewing for a 5 year old in the first place - since it is filled with stories of war, bombings, crime & mayhem every day.
Manufactured story created to fit Jami's own opinion that the removal of the children was wrong, IMO.

I found myself talking back to Jami (even if she couldn't hear me) asking what was wrong with her that her child came away with that kind of fear from a news story. I think she just made it up...but that's jmo.

I think it's how she's describing it to her child - either that or she's watching the FLDS news channel. And no way would I let my child watch a story about child rape, abuse, and all the complex questions they are so far too young to understand. That comes when they are old enough to understand, ask questions, and figure things out.

My 6 yr old does watch the news w/me from time to time (normally while making dinner) and she has asked questions from time to time.... but how a child would get that out of the coverage so far??? No, that came from what she's heard people saying directly.

I left this comment (writen hastily, I admit), not sure it will make it through moderation. Her little piece was actually worse than what I expected.
"Hmmm, well I don’t think a 5 yr old is going to say these things (those ‘prairie kids”? No, a 5 year old has no idea what a prairie is, let alone the author is trying to say the kid picked up the word prairie just from someone describing the women’s dresses? I don’t think so. I doubt a 5 year old is paying that much attention to the news anyway. This is just a bogus commentary written to insert a little sensationalism. Come on, “he felt a little less safe from the government”????? Does he even know there is a government?"
Maybe I'm wrong, but do 5 year olds use the word prairie and think about their government in terms of protecting them?

I don't think a 5 y/os world is that big yet. My grandkids at 5 were much more interested in toys than they were watching the news. In fact, if the news was on they complained and wanted to watch a Disney movie.

IMO, Jami is like Nancy when it comes to making things sound bigger than they really are and skewing the truth for sensationalism.
I enjoyed the comments on her blog. Shame on her for putting her child in a situation to be frightened. She had an opportunity to explain to her son why those children were being helped rather than hurt, and she chose to ignore it.

JMO but it is almost like watching BOR trying to talk about the things he claims to know about. again jmo
IF this really happened I would like to have seen her respond to the child in such a way that would make him feel safe. There was no response.

So… you didn’t take the five minutes it would have taken to explain to your frightened son that the police were moving the children for their own safety? That the police were worried that the children would be harmed, and were taking them somewhere safe until everything could be figured out? Or did he pick up the word “kidnapped” from your conversations?
Sorry, but the one that let your son go to sleep afraid wasn’t the news. It was his mother.
Wonder if she'll post about her son again?

How ironic that a woman making a living for her family by covering stories such as this, should have concerns as to the welfare of those watching it! :punch:
I control the tv, therefore I do not fear what my kids are watching and as with any other thing in life, would explain to them on a "need to know" basis.

EXACTY what Jami Floyd should have done with her 5 y/o since she lets the 5 y/o watch about this stuff on the news.
Bad parenting on Jami's part, if what she said is true and not something to sensationalize her position.

No 5 yr old watches the news and expresses fear the government is going to get him, in my world. I have 6 grandkids, and two of them are 5 & 6, never saw them watch the news and they are not idiots...5 yr old just aren't interested in the news, unless there is an animal on it and you point it out. A 5 yr old watching the news would be like an adult watching the news in another language IMO.
And ITA with the above post I am quoting. [/*]
Annie, yes, I agree with the big BS flag on this one. The article is ludicrous and I can't see how the author feels ok about her brand of journalism just to have a story. I don't see 5 year olds running around saying, "Why isn't my government protecting me!!!"
