I would certainly be interested in knowing what the people were being arrested for (it could be a variety of things) and what the children were saying in the interviews. I hope we hear more.

(CNN) -- Texas authorities are investigating "the safety of children" at a ranch occupied by about 400 followers of polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, officials said Friday.
An aerial view taken last year shows some living quarters at polygamist leader Warren Jeffs' Texas ranch.
1 of 2 Authorities have sealed off the 1,900-acre ranch near Eldorado and no one is allowed to enter or leave, officials with Child Protective Services and the Department of Public Safety said.
The people living at the ranch are cooperating, authorities said.
Escorted by police, social workers entered the compound in south central Texas at 8 p.m. Thursday after receiving "a referral," said Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner. Watch police seal off the compound »
Child Protective Services "is conducting an investigation into safety issues of the children who live within the compound," she said.

I have family who lives about 80 miles from this compound. The people of Eldorado were appalled when they found out what was being built out there...that's pure Bible Belt and definantly not poligamy country. Law Enforcement has been very nervous about the whole thing...I know everyone thinks about the Branch Dividians. I would hope that some of the girls they took in could escape this lifestyle, but I'm sure they don't want to lose their families, and have been raised to be afraid of hell fire and damnation if they were to say anything bad about anyone:(. I hope at least the one person that filed the complaint escapes.

6 pm news reports that 18 girls are in custody at this point from age 6 months to 17 years of age. I guess just for interviews? (how do you interview a 6 mo old?) They showed a Baptist church bus driving them away from the compound...that is somehow funny...couldn't they have used a school bus or something? :o

the problem is to find a legal way to get into these compounds. another poster on the warren jeffs board said that texasdoes no have any oversight on home schooled children. if they were required to take yearly tests, i would be possible to see if they were being taught anything, except their cults doctrine.
if they dont go to school, they dont have to have vacines, either, do they?
at the old place in utah most of the children and extra wives of these dirty old men were all on welfare of one kind or another. so we are paying for the kids and the church leaders takes all the money for themselves.
i should think that the federal government should be able to do something, but have never heard any of them try.
the only thing i can think of would be if they are making the young men and women work with machinery at an age that is not allowed by fed work rules.

Innocent children should never be deprived of food and medical care just because the adults are abusing the system.
I suspect that is why the feds aren't doing anything about these plural wives and families.
They should be investigating the abuse of this "religion." I've read that it's illegal to be plurally married, but if they're not marrying by legal means, the children are considered without legitimacy, and still have to be cared for, just as any single parent's child would be.
What to do?

ELDORADO, Texas (CNN) -- Authorities say they removed 52 children, ages 6 months to 17 years, from a West Texas ranch occupied by followers of imprisoned polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs.
Texas authorties stand in front of a bus they used to transport children from a FLDS compound Friday.
Eighteen girls have been placed in the temporary custody of the state under a court order, said Child Protective Services spokeswoman Marleigh Meisner.
Authorities said they continue to search the 1,900-acre YFZ ranch, and at least one suspect is being sought by police.
Meisner said troopers and child welfare officials arrived at the secluded ranch Thursday evening with arrest and search warrants. They were responding to a report of "physical abuse" and neglect involving a 16-year-old girl. At this point in the investigation, she added, the abuse does not appear to be sexual.
Another Child Protective Services spokesman, Darrell Azar, said the 18 girls were placed in state custody because it appeared that they "had been abused or were at immediate risk of future

I'd be pretty darn sure it's true about the men taking all the federal aid. This is just a scamming cult - the men get all the money and multiple young wives, they keep control with threats of damnation and isolation, and kick out a bunch of the young boys when they get old enough for a wife, so they'll have enough girls to give the old men multiple wives. It's a very sick, sick group.
I've heard before about them working all the kids from an early age, not in safe environments too. When they get a little older, and generally not old enough (wouldn't want them to be able to think for themselves), the girls are married off to older guys. The guys - unless they've shown how very properly brainwashed, loyal, and unscrupulous they are - are thrown away, kicked out for any pretext, so there will be enough girls for the multiple wives the cult demands. They've got it pretty rough - no skills, no understanding of the real world, little education, and a belief that they're worthless because they aren't in the cult anymore. IIRC, there was a documentary about them. Very sad.
I'm glad the gov't is stepping in - whether a cult or a militia - no one should be able to set up their own mini-government on American soil and break laws and harm children there.

Buses from Schleicher County ISD and First Baptist Church of Eldorado were pressed into service Friday to transport 167 children away from the YFZ Ranch where they had been removed from their parents custody by Texas Child Protective Services in accordance with a court order issued by 51st District Judge Barbara Walther.
The children range in age from 6 months of 17 years. There are 96 boys and 71 girls. CPS is trying to determine if the parents of the babies are among the young girls they took into custody, or if the parents even live at the YFZ Ranch.
CPS is seeking immediate temporary custody of 18 of the children while the remainder are to be interviewed to determine if they are "at risk."

www.myeldorado.net has great stories about Sheriff Doran and the research he did on the sect that moved into his sleepy little county. I'm very impressed. Also there is Texas Rep. Harvey Hilderbran's House Bill 3006 that he wrote and started to push through as soon as they realized that the polygamist sect was settling in Eldorado. It raises the marriageable age to 16 for girls in Texas, with or without parental consent, and makes it illegal for step-parents and step-children to get married.

The written articles keep stressing the compound residents are FULLY cooperating....however in one of the news videos, the sheriff had to bring in armored personnel carriers and treaten to run over the men who parked their trucks in the way of their entry to the compound. Not what I would call fully cooperating. I hope they are able to FULLY search and get all the underaged girls (and boys if they wish to leave).
I did watch a special on the other 2 compounds the followers of Jeffs have and the poor children and women have been so brainwashed that some of them will probably not ask to be kept away and will most likely protest.
The special talked of how most of the women and children do qualify for food stamps and (if I recall correctly ) cash assistance while the cult is actually very wealthy and could very adequately take care of these women and children without the government assistance they receive. They had beautifuly furnished buildings.
The dirty old men of the cult find any reason - or basically no reason - to xcommunicate the young men and run them out of town to keep from the girls having a choice but to marry the old men in the forced family arranged marriages.
The young men who are run out of town are ill equiped to make it in the real world and there were so many that the local towns folkis took notice and tried to help them assimilate.
I pray that all these young girls can be kept away from the cult until they can see what the world is like and understand they do not have to go back to these old men and incestuous marriages.
I applaud this judge and sheriff and all who are working to rescue these young people. May God be with them.

My mistake. It was Kelly Fischer who got 45 days.
Here is what Judge Steve Conn had to say about that sentencing. Check out the entry dated Aug. 4th 2006.
The practice of plural marriage isn't the only religious belief he finds odd.
Conn said he believes Fischer was motivated by "sincere religious" conviction when he took his 16-year-old stepdaughter as a plural wife.
But, Conn said, he personally finds polygamy an "abominable" belief. "I find it very hard to accept [that] someone can subscribe to a religion that allows them to have multiple wives at the same time," Conn said.
Some of the things he finds odd with other religions are NOT against the law. Nor do they include taking young children related or not as their plural wife.

I am guessing the city has been preparing for them and have very thick files on them. They were ready to go when they got the call from the young girl. I assume they had to wait for "cause" to enter their compound to rescue any minors.
My guess the interviews included questions about child labor and what 'employment" is going on in there to establish that welfare fraud is likely. Then they can pursue charges upon the entire community. Let's hope. This is not Utah where LE, Judges and Senators are in their hip pockets!

183 people removed, including 137 children. Thats 3 kids per adult, but I am sure of the 46 "adults" there are a lot of young women in that number.
Does nayone know how many men they got?
Where do they work and get the money to built compounds like this??? [/*]
Because the law does not recognize plural marriages, only the marriage to the first wife is considered valid. The succeeding marriages are deemed invalid by law. Once those wives of the invalid marriages begin producing children, they begin applying for welfare benefits and food stamps. In the eyes of the law, these women are considered to be single mothers.
One of the mandates of Warren Jeffs, the so-called and self-proclaimed prophet, is that the men must pay to the "church" upwards of over $1000 per month. Jeffs can, and regularly does, demand that this amount be increased, depending upon what the needs of the "church" are at the time. This money comes from the welfare benefits that the plural wives are receiving.
Men in the FLDS who own businesses are required to turn over the majority of their profits to the "church." The homes that these followers live in are all owned by the "church" via a Trust that was set up by one of Warren Jeffs' predecessors.
In the Utah/Arizona community of Hildale, Utah and Colorado City, Arizona, the state prevailed in a lawsuit and is now allowing disenfranchised (or ousted) members of FLDS to buy back the homes that they built with their own money and that were previously owned by the FLDS Trust.

I am in AZ. and I remember reading about a similar raid here, in the 1950s. As I recall, it was a disaster because families were torn apart and the wives did not want to leave. The news showed 100s of kids and wives walking around screaming.

According to one of the articles I read it said that Dale Barlow was on probation and had to register as a sex offender. I know that all states have different rules, but how was this man allowed to live on this compound with hundreds of children (probably around a school as well) and under the supervision of a probation officer? I know that not all sex offenders have the same restrictions, but this would seem to me to be a very high risk situation for a sex offender to be in.

Barlow is a son of former Colorado City Mayor Dan Barlow; he also is one of eight Colorado City men accused by Arizona prosecutors in 2005 of marrying underage girls and committing sex crimes.
He pleaded no contest in April 2007 to conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor, and a second charge was dropped. The victim was a 16-year-old girl with whom he had a son.
Barlow was later sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years of probation.

If the same crime had occurred to anyone of us, on our streets or in our neighborhoods, the crimes would be looked at more harshly and called what it "really is"?

With law enforcement officers keeping the 1,700-acre fenced retreat blocked off, residents of the tight-knit West Texas community focused their efforts on feeding and comforting the displaced children.
Many in the windswept town of 2,000 bypassed the local spring festival with its tricycle races and goat-kissing booth to load bags of teddy bears, juice, snacks and diapers into the First Baptist Church building that's serving as a temporary shelter. Two blocks away, members of the Church of Christ were preparing a dinner of fresh chicken, broccoli, bread and salad for the now homeless families.

I hope they keep the woman, young girls and babies long enough to show them that the world outside of their compound is not evil as they have been led to believe.
My great fear is that the girl who was brave enough to call out for help will be too afraid to speak out further. I have read the book "Escape" by Carolyn Jessop and I am gravely afraid that all girls that particular age will be punished until this particular girls owns up to making the call for help. This is the way things happen in that community. They have released too much information about the caller, she needs protection, BADLY now.

here are photos in progression at this link that show the ranch when it was first obtained by FLDS and then all the buildings nad construction going on, taken mostly by aircraft passing overhead, not on-the-ground photos...
make me think, if the women get welfare from the state, and that alot of the incomes, if not most of the incomes, come from that, and since they built a cement factory onsite without the air quality permits, why doesn't out government just take back the whole compound and do something constructive with it..since the government paid for it!!! It was OUR tax dollars that built this place- it belongs to US, not HIM!
How are they going to help the women who do want help, who do say they want "out" from the get-go? Wonder how that works, where do they go, what help do they get first, and how in the world can they reintergrate into society- jobs, housing, etc?
My 'prayers' are not just for all the kids, its for strength for those women who want to start life all over again. What a battle they have in front of them. I hope "we" help them all we can....:rose: [/*]
I believe a start would be those who have once been in the FLDS and were able to get out to be there to talk with them. These people know of the fear they now feel and can identify with them. They could tell them what awaits them in the outside world.

Well, one officer said they found everything they wanted and more... wonder if he really should have said that.
It really probably wouldn't have been too difficult to suspect who it was. They gave her age, the age of the child and the age of her "husband." Didn't they even put the "husband's" picture up?
I just heard the raid is over for now. I suspect there will be another in the middle of the night looking for the husband. He was probably hiding.
I'll be very interested in knowing how it goes with all of the children they brought out. I hope many choose to stay out. The boys, too are in danger.

Well, dicee, that's an interesting thought. Of course we don't know if they found what they wanted before they found before her.
I know this sounds horrible, but I'm not sure if I would do anything to LE if they fabricated the report to go in. I'd rather see something done about this cult and saving the children and women inside.
of course, they could have used the law against polygamy for the excuse to go in, but there may be reasons they chose not to go that route.

Texas officials: 219 women and kids held; compound search only half complete
Sixteen-year-old who complained of abuse still not found
By Brooke Adams
The Salt Lake Tribune
Texas officials said Sunday afternoon they had removed 219 women and children from a FLDS ranch but were only halfway through their search of the compound.
Marleigh Meisner, a spokeswoman for the Texas Child Protective Service, gave the new total at an afternoon news conference at 3 p.m. CST. Three hours later, another bus filled with women and children left the ranch, owned by the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Meisner said authorities still have not identified or located a 16-year-old girl who called for help and said she had been physically abused. That call sparked a raid that began Thursday night at the ranch, outside the town of Eldorado.
The girl may be in the group of 60 women and 159 children, but if she is, she has not stepped forward, Meisner said.
The caller provided "limited information," she said, adding it is difficult to discern the ages of girls in the group and that "this is a community where names are changed."
Still, Meisner said: "I am confident this girl does indeed exist," and that the abuse allegation is legitimate.
Asked if FLDS members have been forced to leave the ranch, Meisner said, "I do not believe we forced them to leave. They knew what their options were."

i know that emotionallly the women from this group will have a hard time outside the compound. but they were always working very hard, having many pregnancys, living on very little, the men kept all the money . many had jobs, teaching, etc. from the pictures of the place they were doing most of the farm work, babies out there with them in buggys.
they already know how to stretch time and money to survive.
so with some help they should be able to take care of themselves and their children, if they want to.
but if they are still entralled with the religion, they do not want to go to hell. as they have been told since childhood will happen to women who do not obey.
imo, that will be the hard part for them and i wonder if many could adjust on the outside of the compound mentally.

I find it really odd that this probation officer would say that his client, Dale Barlow, told him that law enforcement officials or authorities had contacted him to ask him where he is.
I have never heard of law enforcement contacting an intended target of an arrest warrant to warn that person that they were being sought--especially in such a high profile situation such as this.
I think that probably someone from within that compound contacted Dale Barlow and told him that law enforcement was there with an arrest warrant and was looking for him.

People who have left sect go to Texas to help
They can explain the group's culture and comfort displaced women and children
By Brooke Adams
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 04/07/2008 12:35:48 AM MDT
ELDORADO, Texas - Carolyn Jessop, once married to the man who oversees the FLDS church's besieged ranch, arrived Sunday in west Texas with two daughters she hoped to reunite with their half siblings.
Jessop, whose memoir Escape detailed her experiences in and departure from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, visited the Schleicher County Civic Center Sunday to explain the group's culture to authorities working with women and children taken from the YFZ Ranch this weekend.
Also in Texas: Elissa Wall, the young woman whose testimony sent sect leader Warren S. Jeffs to prison in Utah on convictions for rape as an accomplice, and Shannon Price of the Utah-based Diversity Foundation, which helps teens leaving the sect.
Jessop said that she thought she had seen one of her four stepdaughters on a school bus as it left Eldorado earlier in the day. "It would be monumental if I could see those girls after five years," she said.
Born and raised in the faith, Jessop became the fourth wife of Merrill Jessop when she was 18; he was 50. They had eight children together in Utah before she left him in 2003.
Betty, Jessop's oldest daughter, returned to the sect after she turned 18. Jessop said Betty, whom she speaks with regularly, does not live at the ranch. Merrill Jessop has been in charge of the YFZ Ranch for several years.

O! This is Good News!!
I remember during Jeffs trial a few of us went overboard in our zeal, wishing to send in buses and get the women and children out.
Walton, my best to you as always, you have been a consistent poster and forum-president almost that I must give you Kudo's.
Girls raised without knowledge of their right's to self determination becomes a cyclical problem. Girls grow into women, women give birth to babies, babies become children and so on.
The women are as brainwashed as their children are, how could they know any better?
It IS like a cult, and in my opinion, they will need a lot of therapy to get through it.

Women, Children Taken From West Texas Town's Polygamist Compound; Search for 1 Teen Continues

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Associated Press) -- Authorities who took 220 women and children from a polygamist compound weren't sure whether the teen girl whose phone call prompted the raid was among them. [/*]

And she's not yet been found in the compound, after LE has had plenty of time.
So thus my guess that she's dead, and they've hidden the body somewhere. Just my guess. [/*]
Seems, the women and children are brainwashed, frightened and treated like a piece of property to be used.
Do they get "welfare" checks each month from the state?
What amount of $$$$ are they being paid each month out of the tax payers pocket??
What is the total amount of welfare benifits paid to these people for a year?

On GMA on TV this morning, Carolyn Jessop, former wife of YFZ leader Merrill Jessop, stated that she felt it would be very helpful for some of them (former FLDS members) to speak with these women and children. She pointed out that SHE could tell the authorities who was who and how they are related, which Marleigh Meissner (sp?) of CPS said was part of the problem identifying the girl who had placed the call. Hope CPS and LE allows them to, they could explain life on the outside AND help with the investigation.

Julie this is all I could come up with. Hope it helps.
Common Law Marriage or Informal Marriage:
Yes. Texas also refers to common law marriage as an informal marriage.
For a marriage to be declared an informal marriage in Texas, a couple has two options.
1. Sign a declaration of their marriage under oath. The form is available at County Clerk's office.
The Declaration and Registration of Informal Marriage asks for full names, woman's maiden surname, addresses, dates of birth, places of birth, social security numbers, and relationship information.
The Declaration states: "I solemnly swear (or affirm) that we, the undersigned, are married to each other by virtue of the following facts: On or about (Date) we agreed to be married, and after that date we lived together as husband and wife and in this state we represented to others that we were married. Since the date of marriage to the other party I have not been married to any other person. This declaration is true and the information in it which I have given is correct."
2. Live together as husband and wife in Texas
Represent to others that they are married.
Agree with one another that they are married.
Individuals under the age of 18 may not enter into an informal marriage.

:) I think that they need all the help that they can get. Just trying to figure out who is who and related to who is a HUGE task in itself.
I wanna help somehow. Do you know who I could call? Who I should call?
I've been reading about all this since it happened. And everyone has been just great about posting links from all sorts of news sources. Major networks, little town newspapers etc. I've even seen some coverage on tv.I think I even saw Randy from Eldorado on one of the clips and heard an interview with Nate Carlisle from Salt Lake.
But it wasn't until I actually heard our local media covering it that it all sunk into this thick skull of mine.
CPS, Judges, Sheriff Doran, State Troopers, Highway Patrol and even the Texas Rangers.. An operation this big I would almost think that the Governor knew. And they ALL have acted imo very professional and with care and concern.
Even with a gag order now in place the Media has done an awesome job.
Texas came thru loud and clear. They do care. And they cared enough to do something. :patriot:

Good article...I have one question I keep thinking of...since Barlow is in Co. City according to his parole officer, was this girl that made the complaint originally from up there, and maybe was very unhappy with her marriage, and shipped down here to be "remarried." So, LE is still going out there if they found the boy in the bushes. Was he trying to escape? Four children hiding in a shop. They must have children hid all over the place yet. I wonder if they have told the boys they were free to come if they wanted to as well? I sure wish we knew more.
I know that Dale Barlow (?) is in Colorado. But he probably was hiding and then fled. If someone reported the girl before LE got there, he had plenty of time to leave. Plenty of time to do something to the girl, too.:(

I have a feeling they are looking for, or found, some of those tunnels that Carolyn Jessop mentioned on the Good Morning America program Monday morning.
She said that it was common for the FLDS to use those tunnels for hiding children away in those tunnels.
She also stated that she spent 3 years locked in one of the tunnels at the Utah/Arizona compound because she had made attempts to escape the cult.
If there are hidden tunnels, there is no telling just how many MORE children and women might be secreted away.

Grammy do you remember the Ruby Jessop story?
http://helpthechildbrides.com/stories/rubyjess.htm
14 year old Ruby was married illegally and in secret to her step-brother, Havin Barlow, in the polygamous community of Hildale Utah on April 23, 2001. The FLDS Church , which controls this community, expects that when a girl becomes sexually mature, she will be married off to an older polygamous male of the FLDS leadership choosing.
The marriage was blessed by her step father, Fred Jessop, 2nd councilor to the prophet and officiated by Warren Jeffs, first councilor to the prophet, who has now become Prophet since his father, Rulon Jeffs, died.
Ruby was married against her own choice. 3 weeks later Ruby ran away in an attempt to avoid her fate. She went to her brother's house, where she thought she would be safe. Her brother, Joe C. Jessop Jr., thought he could protect her. He couldn't!

You know, it's funny, but to this day, when I hear the term "Morman" church (yes I know they broke off from the actual church), I can't help but think of Donny Osmond (or the Osmond brothers).
Why hasn't the Morman Church stepped in to help acclimate (sp?) the families back into the mainstream?
Every other religous group seems to have stepped up, have I missed something here?
I don't know enough to know if it would help, it just seems unlikely that the Leaders of the actual Morman Church would be ignoring this.

Abuse Investigated at Polygamist Compound After 400 Removed
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
ELDORADO, Texas — Until the raid on their compound last week, the women and girls of the Yearning for Zion Ranch spent their days caring for its many children, tilling gardens, and quilting, dressed in pioneer-style dresses sewn by their own hands.
But it was no idyllic recreation of 19th-century prairie life, authorities say. Since last week, they have interviewed members of the polygamist sect looking for evidence that that girls younger than 16 were forced into marriages with older men.
Five miles off the highway, beyond a double gate, the group's members live lives that are isolated even for the scruffy West Texas prairie. Their 1,700-acre ranch is like its own city, with a gleaming temple, doctor's office, school and even factories.
"Once you go into the compound, you don't ever leave it," said Carolyn Jessop, who was one of the wives of the alleged leader of the Eldorado complex, but who left the sect before it began moving to Texas in 2004.

I'm confused. I read Carolyn's Jessop's book and sympathize with what she went through.
Now she's talking about secret tunnels and "breaking the baby" (a sort of water torture thing). Why didn't she mention this in the book? It seems to me you would include the most shocking aspects in your book. Seems odd to me.

The sheer numbers of children & women the authorities have taken (or that went willingly) from the FDLS compound is staggering. I wish the state of TX all the best with sorting it out, that's no easy task... and usually Welfare workers are over-burdened as it is.
Im not surprised there's tunnels where some children are hidden, there may be hidden chambers in various buildings as well. Im sure LE is being thorough with their search.
Hopefully this will be a chance for some of the women who requested to leave to start anew in life, with the proper assistance to legally get away from the men at the compound and not live in fear.
Unfortunately, with the past history of polygamy in the Mormon religion (when it was condoned, way back when) - I fear there will always be some breakout sects who still preach this. Even though originally polygamy wasn't a part of the religion. Its said that Joseph Smith (founder) had the "revelation" to allow himself "spiritual wives" since his wife Emma wasn't wanting nor tolerating it. Joseph is said to have had many spiritual wives, yet at an inquest after Joseph & Hyrum Smith were killed at the Carthage(sp) Jail - Emma denied that Joseph ever had any other wives. Its said she did this to get back at all those "spiritual wives" & her sons all beleived what she said even with testimonials from many others that said the opposite.
For a very interesting read about the foundings of the Mormon religion, a thorough biography of Joseph Smith, including polygamy, the migration to Utah, etc - read Fawn Brodie's "No Man Knows My History". Its incredibly well researched. I know a few Mormon's and they are decent people, but IMO its crazy how many people fell for what I feel is a con. Much like Scientology, a made up religion.

Absolutley Heart Breaking, These poor people, what other life do they know? I just can't believe this has existed in our life and times here in the USA.
I understand this is their belief and may not conform to the general population of US religions but to me this is nothing but pedophilia, IMO. I am curious if the state of Texas supported these women through the welfare program. How sad is that, but I did read on another site that this is normal in inter cities all over the US. Women producing babies by numerous fathers, collecting welfare checks which are turned over to the fathers for perhaps drug money, is this possible?

Affidavit: Report of child brides led to raid
SAN ANGELO, Texas (CNN) -- Tipped that girls as young as 13 were being forced to enter "spiritual marriages," have sex and bear children, Texas officials raided an isolated polygamist retreat in West Texas, according to court documents released Tuesday.
Authorities load members of the FLDS onto buses as they search their Texas ranch for clues of abuse.
1 of 3 The information came from a 16-year-old girl who called a family violence hot line March 29, "expressing the need to leave her current living situation," according to the affidavit.
The teen bride said she was in an abusive "spiritual" marriage to an older sect member, the documents stated. She reported that she was the man's seventh wife and had been beaten and choked.
She said she had been hospitalized in the past with cracked ribs and hoped to escape the abuse by faking a medical condition.
The allegations prompted police and social workers to remove hundreds of children from the 1,900-acre YFZ Ranch near Eldorado, the documents stated. The ranch was built by followers of imprisoned polygamist "prophet" Warren Steed Jeffs.
Girls deemed by adult sect members to be of "child-bearing age" were forced to submit to sex and have babies, according to the documents, which provided the legal basis for authorities to remove the children and place them in state custody.
The 16-year-old said her parents brought her to the ranch a year ago and she was "spiritually married to an adult male member of the church," the affidavit said.
According to the affidavit, the teen bride reported her husband "beat and hurt her whenever he got angry -- hitting her in the chest and choking her -- and that while such abuse was occurring, one of the other women in the home would hold her infant child."
On March 30, the teen called again. She told workers she was last beaten Easter Sunday. Her husband told her if she tried to leave the ranch "she would be found and locked up."
She said church members also told her if she left the ranch "outsiders will hurt her, force her to cut her hair, to wear makeup and [different] clothes and to have sex with lots of men."

I haven't been a big fan of news watching over the last two years. Last night I took the remote to another room (so I wouldn't be so tempted to turn it off) and watched the news.
I watched Larry King and I thought the show was a good one. I then continued to watch the news. There was a lady with dark hair and she was dressed in red.
I kept saying her name in my head so I wouldn't forget but.... I fell asleep right before the 53 raid segment. Not because the show wasn't any good but because I was tired.
I liked her and I liked the amount of info she was giving.
Who was she?
I'm so glad that this sicko religion is finally being brought to justice.
No Religion has the right to molest children and throw out and abandon young boys to fend for themselves because they want the young girls for themselves.
50 year old men do NOT have the right to have sex with 13 year old girls and make them pregnant against their will.
I hope the Courts will put an end to this sicko religion.

Can anyone explain this double standard to me.
Doesn't our LAWS apply to everyone in the U.S.?
Doesn't men and women (school teachers) get prison time for having sex with even ONE minor?
arrested for coming to a minors house with the intention of having sex!
WHY aren't these men looked at as sex offenders??
It's the same as other sex offenders in the US...only alot more of it happening...including abuse, rape, torture, neglect and a form of imprisonment.......jmo
Those FLDS men who are running this place should have thought twice about Texas. DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS. LE there does not put up with crap like this. Arizone and Utah are one thing but they made a grave mistake setting up camp in Texas. Those lawyers of theirs (FLDS) are now trying to have the search warrant ammended. GOOD LUCK a-holes. They're just gonna have to deal with it. I hope LE gets as much evidence as they can get their hands on. The old men want sex so bad, get it in prison just like Jeffs is getting. Then they'll know what abuse is. Just makes me sick.

All FLDS members are subject ot the laws of our land. LE had never received any call for help until now, hence the raid. Texas will prosecute these $astards to the fullest extent of the law, just like Arizona did with Jeffs. That was just the tip of the iceberg. There are some communities where the police are FLDS members and the compounds and the goings-on are protected by them. Not in Texas!!

Moses married Tzipporah, one of Jethro's seven (or eight?) daughters and they had two sons Gershom and Eliezer (Exodus 2:11-22; 18:3-4). Im not sure if Moses had any other wives & havent read anything like that, but he could have. I know Islam allows multiple wives.
I suppose all religions are created at some point, even the Bible itself had the Counsel of Niacin to create 'the bible' where they debated which books would and wouldn't be included. Example is the Book of Mary Magdaline isn't included.
Joseph Smith had been convicted of virtually being a fraud before he claims he saw the Angel Moroni for "treasure seeking". "Fraud" may not be the exact word of what he was convicted of being, but it meant the same (Brodie's book is at home otherwise Id quote it directly, she used public records in part to back her claims up). He'd treasure seek by using his "seer stones" in a hat where they'd tell Joseph where a treasure was buried/hidden. People paid him to find treasure and he wasnt able to deliver. Eventually Joseph used the hat (I think with his favorite seer stone) to create the book of Mormon. The original Book of Mormon was hidden or destroyed by Martin Harris' wife after Martin took it home to pacify his wife since he was spending so much time & money on Joseph's new religion and she was upset about that (IIRC they later divorced). Joseph then re-transcribed the book. Id LOVE to see what the original, first book said though... somehow I doubt it was the same although themes/storylines may have been close. No archeological evidence has been found to support Joseph's claims FWIW - granted, Im sure the Bible also has little evidence, but it does have some.

I don't think they had much "role" in it. These men had complete control of the women and first/2nd generations grew up with the brainwashing and domination.
IMO the moms are victims as well. Don't forget they believe that the outside world is satan. On NG someone being interviewed said that only the men were allowed out of the compound. I would imagine if the women were it was without kids.
They found a "sex bed" IN the temple so when the leader decided to marry the 13 year old whomever, they had sex right there in the temple immediately after the so called wedding.
Its unbelievable. Heck there are not even enough foster homes for the kids, but im not sure its right to separate them from their kids once they find out who they are (the moms i mean). They ALL need deprogramming :(

Thank goodness Texas has rescued these women and children. It's appalling that this sort of child abuse has been allowed to go on under the guise of "religion." My heart goes out to these kids and I hope they get all the love and tender care they need (and deserve).

Warrants too broad from Greta Van Susteren
Observed a number of young girls who had already had children.
Upset that Barlow was not on the sex offenders list.
Imminent risk to teenage girls at the compound.
One says to err on the side of caution for the young girls...Greta saying Jim Hammer is wrong per constitutional violation.
Now a guy yelling that the mayor said he knew what was going on and should have stepped in earlier.
Greta says we were all stupid on how we (LE) handled this!!!

I saw a former sect member testify to that practice.
Here is what is bothering me immensely
When Warren Jeffs was arrested and tried for arranging the marriage of a young girl, and the girl/now woman testified....LE must have gotten information from her on the number of people in the sect (heck that they could probably have gotten on their own in some way) the number of girls, and it would be CLEAR that if he is doing it once that he is marrying more children!
Surely they knew that there were hundreds more children getting raped when they turned 13.

I didn't read it, it was breaking news on anderson360 (cnn) at 11 pm est. The part about the audience was in an interview with a former FDLS member.
Here is an article about the bed though.
"Court documents say teenage girls were required to have sex in the soaring white temple after they were married at a polygamist compound in West Texas.
A confidential informant told officials the temple in Eldorado contains a bed where adult males engage in sexual activity with females under the age of 17."
and later in the article
"The temple also contained multiple locked safes, vaults and desk drawers that authorities sought access to. The affidavit unsealed Wednesday mentions a 16-year-old girl who has four children."

I'm glad to hear of an informant in the compound. I know I heard about Eldorado back at the start because I went home to visit my mom and it was in the newspaper way back then. They have also made it clear that they have kept close ties with the compound trying to make things work out over the years. I think they were smart to wait and watch and be smart before they moved in. I have seen some complaints on sites about LE waiting so long, but even after all this time there are complaints about them moving in, after calls complaining of abuse.

The name of the lady is Campbell Brown. She truly seemed informed about the things she was talking about and asking about. The whole program was shall I say, organized and informative. I liked that. I should have known she was part of CNN and 360.
I watched part of Nancy tonight as well. She started to chew on JL just a bit. I was waiting for JL to start chewing back. lol

Just looked at www.sltrib.com/polygamy/ci_8859783 and it sounds like they have actually found the girl that made the call, unfortunantly sounds like he is a different guy than was on the warrant...could that be a problem? I never worry much about what consentual adults do - but the women, probably even many of the men in the compound can't be described as consentual even when they are adult, in many cases. They aren't allowed to leave - and when they got the chance 188 left. It's pretty sick. They're in a spot where they cannot withhold consent - they have no power to.

There are a lot of Barlows. A lot. And the name goes back a long ways.
http://www.thespectrum.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080408/NEWS01/804080313
Loader said the case against Barlow was because of a third marriage to a girl under the age of 18 when Jeffs, the prophet of the FLDS Church, was still running the show. Loader said the girl still lives with Barlow and is now 25.
Loader said he has kept a tight rein on Barlow - especially since the events in Texas at the YFZ Ranch.
"He reports daily by phone and is very compliant," Loader said. "He (Barlow) is quite concerned about the allegations against him."
Part of Barlow's terms of probation includes registering as a sex offender.
Although Barlow could not be found on any site, including the state of Arizona's Web site for sex offenders, Loader said he is sure that Barlow is registered, as are the other Colorado City men who were charged with similar crimes by grand
But I gotta tell ya, I think a sex offender who should be listed on the registry and isn't that calls his probation officer by phone probably should raise more than just my eyebrow.
As we all know they even had "cell phones" at the YFZ ranch in Texas.
Things that make a person say Hmmmm.

I have a few questions.
1. Why are the men not being detained on suspicion of conspiracy re sexual assault etc. That should allow a dna test to see if they are the fathers of any babies from underage teens. Rather than all being free to leave.
-all i can think of is the court system cannot handle a couple of hundred sexual assault arrests or conspiracy arrests. So they are letting them go.
2. I heard on a teaser for Oreilly (which i refuse to watch) that there are not anywhere near enough foster homes for the children, let alone what to do with the women. So what is the plan for them?
3. Why is the outrage not louder and this story not bigger. We are talking probably at least 100 children raped and assaulted. Im even a little surprised at how slow this forum is compared to some considering the magnitude of the crimes. Even the title..warrants served .. shouldn't be dozens or more children raped on FDLS compound?
i guess im frustrated. This seems to be being treated as some sort of simple lifestyle sickness with the men free and remaining free.
4. Why are ALL the compounds not raided. They should have been raided as soon warren jeffs was found guilty of arranging child marriages when the case showed clearly it is a part of the sects normal behavior. If Joe Blow was arrested for sex/spiritual marriage with a 13 year old and testimony showed that his brother had been a part of it as well -a family thing of molesting kids, then they would be arrested in a heart beat. Is it different because its hundreds not 2? Or is it the word "marriage" that makes the men untouchable?
just my musings and imo.

I've even thrown out the idea that she lived up there, was removed to be remarried down in Eldorado because things weren't working out... just a thought. And he's in an area where the LE has been known to work with them. If the parole officer was just keeping contact by cell he didn't have any idea where he actually was...and in Texas I can get online anytime and find the exact street address of any sexual offender.

The YFZ Ranch has been in Texas for 4 years.

IF that last part turns out to be accurate, that should give LE & social services additional leverage in court to justify a long separation of the abused from the abusers, imo.
I don't 'want' that information to be true, but if it is, I pray that someone, somewhere, will be willing to testify about it. My fear is that IF it is true, it would be the sort of thing witnessed by other men, but not by any of the women. I imagine that men who were willing to witness and/or take part in ritual assaults like that will not be real inclined to admit to it, for many reasons.

If they escaped, they weren't living on the Eldorado compound. If they were not living on the Eldorado compound, Sheriff Doran could only use that information as a base. To take into account what MAY have been happening. Until he had reason to believe that what had occurred elsewhere, was ALSO occurring THERE, he did not have probable cause to get search warrants.

Both CNN & MSNBC were showing it live for a while. I'm taking a guess that it will be online sometime soon.
Sheriff Doran said that he had an insider's information from about the time the FLDS started arriving. He consistently refused to identify who this person may be, whether they lived on the Eldorado compound, in Utah, Arizona, Canada, etc.
He also said he went to great lengths these past 4 years to develop a respectful relationship with those handful of men who represent themselves as being 'in charge' of the YFZ compound. He repeatedly stated that they (LE) have been trying their best to respect the daily cultural norms of the FLDS (not talking about the sexual stuff, just the daily living things that are common for all of them).
Texas Ranger Capt. gave a few more details on how the search warrant was conducted at the temple. That search was done last, LE talked to the FLDS elders about how that search WAS going to be done & asked them if they would unlock the doors. The elder(s) declined & it was necessary to break through all the locks. Before the search was carried out on the temple, approximately 50-60 people lined up outside the temple in protest. One person only attempted to interfere/prevent the search from being conducted, the rest did not.
To the best of their knowledge (LE) approximately 60 people are not left on the compound. A few are women, the vast majority are men. Attempts were made while the property was being searched to hide children from LE.
It was common practice for the YFZ people to go behind closed doors when outsiders (Sheriff Doran) were on the property. Only a very small number ever interacted with Sheriff Doran, the rest were instructed to go inside, away from the view of outsiders.
All the above is a recap, paraphrased by me.

Affidavit: Teen bride identifies suspect as 'spiritual' husbandStory Highlights

NEW: Document suggests marriages between one man and more than 20 wives
NEW: Girl says she has an 8-month-old child and is pregnant again, affidavit states
416 children from polygamist ranch in state custody, housed at fort and shelter
ELDORADO, Texas (CNN) -- The 16-year-old girl whose phone calls led to a raid on a polygamist compound in Texas identified Dale Evans Barlow as the man who she said beat, choked and sexually assaulted her after their "spiritual marriage," according to a court document unsealed Wednesday.
An affidavit says "Sarah," 16, said Dale Evans Barlow, shown in 2005, beat her and forced her to have sex.
The affidavit, signed by Texas Ranger Leslie Brooks Long, also says a former member of the polygamist church told authorities details of the sect's activities -- including a bed inside the group's temple that adult men used to have sex with underage girls immediately after wedding ceremonies.
After authorities raided the ranch late Thursday, the ranger "observed the bed within the temple that had disturbed bed linens and a strand of hair that appears to be from a female head."
The document said the 16-year-old, whom state officials call Sarah, identified her husband as a 49-year-old named Dale Barlow.
Dale Evans Barlow, who turned 50 in November, was arrested in Arizona in 2005 on charges of conspiracy to have sex with a minor. He was placed on three years probation.
State officials said Wednesday they believe they have taken the 16-year-old girl into protective custody, but that she may be afraid to identify herself.
