Sheriff David Harder said Bethanie Dougherty, 40, was last seen the night of April 1st and then heard screaming the morning of April 2nd.
She was heard screaming and then what???
Did anyone look outside or check on her at all???? :(
It says she shared her home w/ her 18 year old son, but it doesn't say if was home when the nieghbors heard screaming....?

This is weird. Last seen about 11 I guess at night. Reported missing the next day. Only one to last seen her is her son. Neighbors heard shrilling screaming called the cops and she was reported missing hours after that.
Says her son was home in the articles. Maybe they need to question him a little bit better...

Her son was home? I didn't get that impression from the news articles. It said he was the last to see her around 10:00 pm and she was outside in her pajamas. I just assumed she was telling him bye - be careful or whatever (assumed she was outside talking to him).
None of the stories say whether or not there were signs of a struggle inside.
The screaming was reported about 3 am. I would think at that hour the screaming would have had to had gone on for a bit for so many people to have heard it. If it had been just one shrill scream, it might have awoken some people, but it seems like it might have been hard to identify - you'd wake up and wonder what that noise was, listen for it to repeat, and go back to sleep when it didn't
It also seems like the screaming must have taken place outside for so many people to have had it.
If there's no sign of a struggle inside, then:
a. Bethanie went outside willingly with son/ex-husband/current boyfriend (if there is one)/other person known to her and something started outside.
*. Same cast of characters above - someone is forcing/coercing her to go with him inside - inside the house, she cooperates, waiting for a chance to get help; outside, starts screaming
c. Stranger breaks in - same scenario as "*" above.
d. Other???
If cars getting out of the neighborhood have to pass by any businesses with video surveillance, I hope LE is checking those. I'd also be looking at any single male neighbors.
Edited to add: Is the letter "bee" a banned letter? I keep editing the post to change the asterisk to a "*" - it looks fine - I save it - then it changes back to an "*".

According to one news source her son and his brother were not living in the house. They were living with her estranged husband.
"Dougherty's daughter and two sons attended classes at Marathon Junior-Senior High School on Thursday, but were distant, Rochelle Hayes said. The boys were staying with their father, who is separated from Dougherty, Hayes said."

The sheriff's department said Dougherty lived at home with her son, and say he isn't sure exactly when she disappeared.

that statement was taking for the link above. I don't remeber what link I read it that said he was home. I guess I was wrong on that one sorry.
edited to say: guess I need to learn how to read better hammer
I just re-read the articles where he last saw her at home at, so your right he was probably telling goodbye or something.

jtazzy;
You were not wrong, several of the first news reports said he was living there.
Here is a part of the first one I saw.
"The Town of Lisle woman was last seen wearing her pajamas outside the home she shared with her 18-year-old son.
He was the last person to see her around 10 p.m. Tuesday."
Even the update I just posted has been changed since it was first written. At first it said she had three sons then changed it to two sons and a daughter.
We can only go by what the news reporters tell us and we know how frequently they mess up.;)

Good question.
Was she living with mom or her dad? Was she staying at a friends house that evening? And if so did Daddy Dearest talk to his son and know his estranged wife would be alone that evening?

Thanks you too.
I read the update that you posted and was curious about the 2 sons and daughter. It said that the sons's lived with dad, but yea I'm also curious about the daughter and where she lived.
Wonder how the relationship between Bethanie and her ex were? Just curious.

I dunno...sometimes i think the press writes things JUST to confuse us. I take the above statement from pressconnects as meaning the boys were staying with their father NOW, because of the mother missing, but not before.
Either way, the outcome doesn't sound promising. I hope I am wrong.
Kinda odd that the kids are already back in school. (And i dont mean that in a bad way, I just think it is kinda odd). Especially since they some are older, you would think that they would be out searching also. Everyone is different though, and maybe there father thinks that he needs to keep some normal routine in their lives right now.
Hoping there is a good outcome on this one.

One of the comments after one of the articles posted above was from Bethany's brother'[s wife (SIL). She addressed this issue about the kids. She said the family is not allowed to help with the search, so al they would be doing is sitting at the fire station. She also said children need support of their friends, so they went to school right away.

Great point omsk, never actually thought about the immediate family not being involved in the actual search. Makes total sense.
What a hottible situation to have to wake up and face in the morning.
Prayers for this family, and for all the families that have to endure the loss of a loved on~~gone without a trace.

Yes, it's horrible, and so suspicious because she (allegedly it was her) screamed, she is gone in only pajamas, with no cell phone, purse or a car. I am sure they are checking out the ex-husband, she must have let whoever it was in, since there is no forced entry or signs of struggle. Per4haps it happened outside, like someone here suggested.
Hope she is safe and found soon :rose:

darcie,
This latest story seems to point to your conclusion about were the son was living but even here I am not sure. The boys may have been staying with their biological father.
If I am reading it correctly it sounds like Bethanie's children are from a previous marriage and she had dated a couple of people since the separation. It states 3 AM was the normal time she got up for work, therefore we can't rule out a stranger.. so lots of potential suspects.. but no answers yet.

Okay the Judge ruled that she would have to find a new place to live. The time she usually got up is the time the scream was happening.
OMG what happened to Bethanie. I could be so wrong but it doesn't sound like either ex or soon to be ex would have any reason to harm her. Sounds like a lot of people neighbors and friends loved her and she wasn't a victim of spouse abuse. This one has me really confused.

The search for a missing Killawog woman continued by boat today, but the major ground search is likely over, a detective on the case said.
Law enforcement boats today searched the Whitney Point Reservoir for signs of Bethanie L. Dougherty, 40, who disappeared early Wednesday morning, said Broome County Sheriff's Detective Lt. Patrick Isenburg.
She is very close to me. Local gossip is going nuts on this one. Hopefully, she just needed a break, but it does not look likely.

No news?
I was googling and found this - anyone know why it says "Wanted and Missing".

I think that box is where they show photos of people who are wanted OR missing. Then, it says "missing" under Bethanie's photo.

On the above link Bethanie's picture is listed as she is missing.
I can't believe there are NO updates and no more media coverage on her.

[Missing store clerk lights up the room and life
Andrew Tutino / Tompkins Journal
You know Bethanie Dougherty, even if you don't know her personally.
By now you know who Dougherty is because she is missing — at least law enforcement, her family and friends hope you do. She was last seen on the night of April 1. Cops, her family and residents from her hometown in Killawog, about 25 miles from Ithaca, have searched all over for her. They can't find her, and it doesn't look like she intended to leave that night.
When Dougherty wasn't missing, she could be found most days at the Xtra Mart across the street from NYSEG here in Tompkins County. Her co-workers say she was a pleasure to work with and she talked to every customer. Even if you don't know her by name, you know the type.
She's the friendly clerk at the convenience store. She probably sees you more than some members of your family do. Daily, she cashes you out for cigarettes, coffee and overpriced gas. On the good days, when you are in a good mood, you let her engage you in conversation because that's the type of person she is, friends say. On the bad days, when that overpriced gas gets you angry, you scan your debit card and on your way you go. The opportunity to meet one of the people who make this world a special place is lost because of a complicated commodities market.
Dougherty is training to be a manager at the Xtra Mart, where she's worked since November. She works the early shift, where the arrival and departure of customers is part of the daily real-world grind. The convenience store — a community meeting place — is the bricks-and-mortar equivalent of the social networking Web sites we spend too much time on. It's MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn all rolled up in one — and you can even get a good cup of coffee.
It was at Xtra Mart where Dougherty reconnected with many people who had lost touch with her. Heather Williams, a teacher and softball coach in Dryden, first met Dougherty about a decade ago through a bowling league at Marathon Lanes. Williams became reacquainted with Dougherty at the convenience store. “It is nice to be able to pop in and see her,” she said.
Dougherty's laughs are loud and hugs are strong, Williams said. Dougherty often talks about her three children, whom she loves with all her heart.
The “very kind, very vivacious” convenience store clerk is the type of person you meet once and don't forget. When Williams sent an e-mail to friends about the disappearance, one woman who had not seen Dougherty in years called to say she remembered the exact time and place she first met her. She even remembered what Dougherty was wearing. “She makes a strong impression on people,” Williams said. “She is very full of life.”
We all have a friend or two like Dougherty in our address book. She is “game” for anything, Williams said. Once, at a bowling tournament, Dougherty ended up wearing a tiara and sash following a chain of events. For some, that wouldn't work. For Dougherty, it did. “She pulled it off,” Williams said. “It was perfectly natural for her to wear a tiara and sash at a bowling tournament.”
Peter Schug also stopped in the convenience store to see Dougherty on occasion. “She is a nice, outgoing person. It is a good job for her,” Schug said. He, too, first met Dougherty through a bowling league and enjoyed catching up on life with her when he found out she was working at the store.
“She is just a nice, pleasant person to be around,” Schug said. “She is a bubbly person and lights up the room when she walks in.”
And even when missing, she still lights up the room. When you walk into the Xtra Mart today, you still buy your coffee, your cigarettes and your overpriced gas.
You walk up to counter to scan your debit card. But Dougherty isn't there. In her place is a missing person flier with her picture on it.
You realize she's gone.
Editor's note: If you have information about Bethanie “Buffy” Dougherty, call the Broome County Sheriff's Office at 778-1196.
