Warren Jeffs Moved to Arizona to Face Charges of Arranging Teen Marriages There
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

PHOENIX — Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs is now in the custody of Arizona authorities to face charges in the marriages of two teenage girls to older men.

Authorities said Tuesday that deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office have taken custody of him from Utah officials.

He's scheduled to make an appearance in court on Wednesday, 2 1/2 years after prosecutors in the northwestern Arizona county filed charges against him and he went into hiding.

Well IMO, what he did under the name of religion aquaints with pimping young girls into the sex slave trade. I would wager that if it were you as a young boy being sold to some old coot pedaphile you would think a bit differently.............

Polygamy-outreach bill is moving fast
Article Last Updated: 02/25/2008 01:45:19 AM MST

The Utah Attorney General's request for money to hire a coordinator for the state's outreach to polygamous communities is moving swiftly through the Legislature. SB239, sponsored by Sen. Curtis S. Bramble, R-Provo, would create a Safety Net Initiative task force within the Attorney General's Office and provide $306,900 in annual funding. It cleared a committee last week and is on the Senate's reading calendar. The money would pay for a coordinator and a case manager; help keep the Utah Link Line operating 24 hours; and provide training and travel money. Paul Murphy, spokesman for Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, has overseen the Safety Net since its creation four years ago. The consortium includes representatives of state agencies, nonprofit organizations, law enforcement and polygamous communities, and it addresses domestic violence, sexual abuse and maltreatment issues. - Brooke Adams

Two Mohave County grand juries indicted Jeffs in 2005 and 2007 on charges related to underage marriages.
Jeffs is named in five different cases in Arizona on charges of sexual conduct with a minor and conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor. The offenses are class 6 felonies, punishable by four months to two years in prison or probation. He also is charged with incest as an accomplice, a class 4 felony.

Michael Piccarreta, a Tucson defense attorney who is representing Jeffs, has asked that Jeffs be allowed to appear in court wearing street clothes rather than a jail jumpsuit, as he did in Utah.
Piccarreta also plans to ask that the trial be moved out of Mohave County because of "massive amounts of unfavorable media coverage" of the Jeffs case.
Judge Conn already has ordered that no photography will be allowed inside the courtroom during Jeffs' proceedings. Arizona does allow audio recording during court hearings; Conn has not banned use of audio equipment.
Piccarreta will be assisted by Richard Wright, a high-profile Las Vegas, Nev., attorney who also helped represent Jeffs in Utah

Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs faces Arizona charges
By AMANDA LEE MYERSAssociated Press Writer
KINGMAN, Ariz. -- Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was handed over to Arizona authorities Tuesday to face sex charges stemming from the arranged marriages of two teenage girls to older relatives.

He already has been convicted in Utah in connection with one of those cases, involving a 14-year-old girl.

Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office took custody of Jeffs from Utah officials, sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said. He was booked into the county jail, where he will be kept separate from other inmates, said sheriff's department Capt. Greg Smith.

"Now it's our turn," Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said. "I hope the message is very simple: the law applies to everybody, whether they're the head of a large religious group, or somebody who's not. It's a crime to abuse children, and there are no exceptions."

Jeffs, 52, is charged as an accomplice with four counts of incest and four counts of sexual contact with a minor in an indictment.

Smith said Jeffs was booked on six counts of sexual conduct with a minor, four counts of incest and one count of conspiracy to conduct sexual conduct with a minor but couldn't explain the discrepancy. Prosecutor Matt Smith wasn't in his office on Tuesday afternoon and couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Aha, but therein lies the crux of the defense's CIC. The marriages are not legally performed, thus, they don't believe the FLD church has violated man's law.

Personally, I hope Jeffs never has the luxury of walking down any street a free man again.

I hope CTV (yeah I know the name has changed) airs the trial, or at least the feed so we can view it online. [/*]That makes him a **** who forced rape on an underage girl, and it makes the alleged "husband" a pedophile, all of which are against the law.

When does the trial formally start?

I assume some one will post live TV links if the trial will be covered!!

I know CNN.com is available for the ones TTV covers, but I prefer to use other links in protest--too many times Ttv breaks to commercial and you miss too much!! I don't want CNN.com getting ad $$'s based on my being there

I still haven't figured out WHAT happened Wednesday--Ttv went almost a whole hour without a commercial while covering Bobby Cutts sentencing!!!!!!

In contrast, when Darren Mack's ex-mother-in-law (Sourya?) was giving her victim-impact statement prior to his sentencing Ttv cut to commercial TWICE!!!!

But you remember that she had an unusually long statement. Many pages.

I do agree, however, that the ads often come at frustrating times. This was true with CourtTV and is true now.

I believe that an agreement may be made as to the time at which the ads will run when it is first ordered by the advertiser.

Jeffs had a slight smile when he walked into the courtroom, and talked in hushed tones with his lawyers. He answered "yes" when Mohave County Superior Court Judge Steven Conn asked if he was Warren Jeffs, but otherwise sat quietly with no expression on his face.

His lawyer, Mike Peccaries, entered the plea on his behalf. After the hearing, Piccarreta said "it's difficult times" for Jeffs, but he declined to speak further.

Conn ordered Jeffs held without bail and set a hearing for March 19.

so in a few weeks a hearing will be held can not wait for that still looking for updates Kind of difficult for Jeffs BULL It is difficult for all of those he hurt with HIS SICK STUFF I kind of want to know what he is eating drinking mug pic and who is roomies is or neighbor

Celebration--I realize that Ttv would have "contracts" for commercial time.

What happened Wednesday WAS unusual!!

They had been doing coverage of Mark Jensen's sentencing all day--with the normal number of commercials!

When the Cutts decision came down Banfield & Ford were talking to the prosecutors in the in the Jensen case. They cut off the interview with them to cover Cutts.

Maybe it sticks in my brain because they had interrupted TTv coverage of the Jensen case to spend a whole day replaying Cutts' testimony....

BUT, as I watched the Cutts sentencing I was waiting for them to interrupt for commercials--they never did!

IF they thought that was so important that they sacrificed ad revenue, WHY wasn't Sourya's testmony THAT important???

I am still here. My mental health is fine. My attitude is fine. Still full of questions and looking for answers. I just got irritated when I was told I asked too many questions. And then frustrated that only one media outlet was allowed to take pictures. There was something wrong about sentencing day.

A little trip back to the good ol' days.

Not sure if you've ever seen Rio Bravo or not, but check it out if you get a chance.

I think that LE is doing a real good job keeping an eye on Warren Jeffs safety. Seems odd though that they won't let someone in the courtroom to take pictures. Maybe the person they are protecting Warren Jeffs from is Warren Jeffs. He appears to have lost weight (probably from fasting), appears to be clean shaven and yet his hair is long. He can shave but can't get a hair cut. Odd isn't it?

They have all this protection to keep Warren Jeffs from the public and media and the lone Gary Engles watching a whole town, county by himself. Hmmmm I think they are messing with us. Things like this make people just speculate about things. Not good.

Nothing wrong with newspaper links. Concerning audio links, it might not be very informative as Warren isn't talking and though Wally talks, he doesn't say much.

Check this out.....Seems like something is missing from this report from the Prison. Maybe things like aliases are for other criminals.

Maybe Warren didn't have any of his vehicles listed under his name.

Maybe Warren didn't own those homes that he was collecting rent.

And maybe we will really find out what Warren is up to and what "other" charges he might be facing.

Here's a newspaper article on court actions indicating that trial may not take place until the fall with numerous defense motions:

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695262963,00.html

From article: "After a witness in the case indicated that she would not testify against Jeffs, Smith filed a motion to dismiss it."

AND "Conn warned both the prosecution and defense about conduct outside the courtroom, including any statements to the media. The more people talk about this case, the more likely there will be statements and articles used as cause for a change of venue, he added."

IMO Jeffs is guilty.barf [/*]

I think the statement Judge Conn made is out of line. "The more people talk about this case, the more likely there will be statements and articles used as cause for a change of venue."

Words like that sure sounds like " If you tell anyone about this..... something bad will happen."

This really doesn't sound like the Judge that allowed Jeffs jailhouse visit to be aired. This doesn't sound like the Judge that allowed a photographers and cameras into his courtroom. This sounds like a Judge that is getting pressure from someone above.

carol, this is a very old post that i remembered. i am from texas but do not live there now. but, i am very proud of my birth state, they are doing something about it right now. this is wonderful, and was brought about by the local people who lived around the compound being built there. kisses to them all.

I'm not sure if this is still the same court house but when I use to go to court with my husband & his friend (lots of speeding tickets) the court house was a trailer house that was the judge home also.
