Police Comb For Clues in Case of Missing Las Vegas Woman
Sep 4, 2007 01:12 PM CDT
*snipped from above*
A missing 81-year-old Las Vegas woman has vanished mysteriously and police are combing for clues. Opal Marie Parsons went missing Thursday morning, Aug. 30.
Carol says Opal is very social and has a large family and large group of friends. "Everyone loves my mom. She's doesn't drink, but is the life of the party -- lots of laughter, friendly, outgoing, loves to dance," she said

She sounds like such a fun woman to be around, and touches many lives.......I hope they find her, and find her soon.
Prayers for you Opal

When her daughter came home from work, she found the lights and TV on, a key in the door, her mother's van parked in the driveway, but no sign of her mother.
The next day the woman's driver's license and social security card were found on the floor of Sam's Town casino.

That sure doesn't sound good......

My brother and his wife live directly across the street from this missing elderly lady. How tragic, where is this poor lady?
To live 81 years then to be missing, I pray she is found safe.
Last night my sister in law called me, there were many police and reporters in front of her house looking for clues. All we can do is pray that she is returned to her family, and that who ever did anything to her are caught.

I saw Ms. Parson's picture online, what a sweet , beautiful lady she is, I am praying she is okay, I feel so sad for her son and daughter, and know how worried they must be. I hope they know how many people are praying for them and their Mother.
My Brother and sister-in-law are scared now to live in that neighborhood, it was always so quiet and safe they both said many times. I will hold good thoughts and lots of prayers that Opal is found unharmed.
God Bless her and her family.

Welcome to the board Linndie! It's always nice to have someone that knows the scoop around the home front.
I hate to think of a woman that lives to be 81 struggling at the hands of some thief/killer/robber. Was hoping this wasn't the case. I guess time will tell. She has been missing to long for me to believe that it is some kind of natural causes that would cuse her to be missing. Falling down, hurt, sick...seems like she would have been found by now if that be the case.
I too am praying for her safe return.

Bloodhounds are trying to find the trail of the missing woman. The Missing Person's Unit says the bloodhounds are brought in when a case looks suspicious.
On Wednesday, the bloodhounds led detectives through the neighborhood but nothing was found.
Investigators say it's unlikely she's in the area of East Charleston and South Nellis where she lives.

Hi darci,
Thanks for the welcome. My brother is keeping us up to date.
They didn't know Opal Parsons personally, but waved to her and her daughter when they saw them. I have this sickening feeling with each day that passes. I just hope and pray they find her, so her family will find peace. I still hope and pray she is found alive and safe, i want so badly to believe in mircales.

Miracles do happen, everyday!! Sometimes though they aren't the ones we want, and sometimes we just don't see them. So don't quit believing in them!

Teams searched a three and a half mile route beginning at Charleston and Nellis, near her home.
They ended at Sam's Town, where some of Parsons' personal belonging were found.
Most volunteers say they saw the story on the news and wanted to help.
In the end, they are left without any new leads. But no one is ready to give up.
Metro detectives believe Parsons was taken against her will.
Her front door was unlocked and her van left in the driveway.

Volunteers Aid in Search For Missing Las Vegas Woman
(includes search & prayer vigil videos and pictures)
It was on Thursday, Aug. 30th that Parsons disappeared, and police are still trying to figure out how the contents of her purse got inside Sam's Town casino.
...
Metro says the only thing they've found of Parson's since her disappearance were her ID and ATM card, which were used at Sam's Town.
Detectives say the man who used them is not a suspect at this point because he found her purse in a dumpster.

It has been nearly two weeks since 81 year old Opal Parsons disappeared.
Right now Metro is still waiting for a big break in the case.
However, her son believes it could be the same person who has been targeting elderly women in the area.
On Wednesday, it will be 14 days since Opal Parsons went missing.
Her son believes her disappearance could be tied to other elderly crimes here in the valley.
Last week a man was caught using Opal's ATM card after claiming to have found her purse in a dumpster.
Still, on Monday, another three mile search between Opal's home and Sam's Town turned up nothing.
At this time, Metro receives about 1,400 missing persons cases a month.
With only eight detectives, they are working around the clock to solve them as fast as possible.
But sometimes such cases get put on the back burner until a major clue pops up.
In the meantime, Opal's son is relying on his faith to get him through this frustrating ordeal.
America's Most Wanted is expected to run a national piece on Opal in the near future.

Opal Parsons is the most caring, giving person in the world.I know that first hand because she is my great-grandma.It seems like just yesterday I saw her at our family reunion. But it feels like forever until I can see her again. Please help by praying or if you know something call the police right away. I love her so much and the thought of someone hurting her tears my heart up. Thank you for your prayers.

I just found Opal's story after not being able to get on recently due to work load. I am praying for this family to find strength and that answers they seek will come forward.
Brittany -- your great-grandmother sounds like a wonderful woman and even though I'm down South and not able to help in any other way, I will pray daily for all of you that love her and need answers.
I agree with the other poster that stated disbelief about man finding ATM card and other items in dumpster. He withdrew money from her account . . . how would he know the pin number if he just found the items like that? Raises red flags to me and makes me wonder why LE is buying that story.
Edited to add: It disturbs me deeply that someone who has lived such a wonderful life and been such a caring person for 81 years can just disappear without a trace from her doorstep. Every day the condition of our world deteriorates and with each story, it terrifies me just a little more to realize how some people can be so cold hearted and ruthless. I just cannot comprehend why people don't care about others anymore. Sorry for rambling.

LV police trying to find woman missing nine days
Man who used her ATM card queried
A search warrant was conducted of the man's house Thursday. He was interviewed into the wee hours of the morning, but police found no evidence to link him to the actual disappearance of Parsons, Holley said.
He has not been charged and police did not disclose where he found the purse. Police would not say how much money was taken from Parsons' ATM account, but Holley did say he could be charged for using Parsons ATM cards at a later date.
...
Investigators do have other persons of interest in the case.
Holley said currently detectives are trying to identify a man who was known to Parsons in her social circles. He would not be more specific, only to say that Parsons had a friendly, platonic relationship with the man.

Or, you may mail a check to:

Hi there tardis-ite. As you can see there isn't much out there in the way of news on Opal. I have searched, and usually come up empty. Haven't seen any of her children/grandchildren post lately either to give us an update. At one time there was even a relative of a neighbor posting.
But I have to agree that the outcome doesn't sound good. There is so much desert out there too! A not so nice place to hide a body. :(
I'll just keep checking, keeping saying those prayers, and trust that one day this family will have Opal...or answers....

Dear Friends of Opal's, Carol and Terry,
My husband and I met Opal at the dances and parties associated with the support networking for divorced, single, widowed people. She has been to our home for parties, and came to our wedding reception. We have been to her home for Super Bowl. We are so saddened by this and wish there was something we could do. We just want to let Opal's family know we are thinking and praying for them. Please write if you would like, at scribecmi@aol.com. We keep looking for any news. We just love her so much.

Dear Darcie and everyone,
I'm just sending a note back to Darcie and anyone else who knew and just is very caring about this lovely lady. We enjoyed her so much. When we got married, and she was in the same group and we had a bunch over for a little party, Opal brought us a dark blue glass vase, filled with beans and stuck in the beans were a bunch of roses. They weren't just roses, they were pens. I didn't even notice that for some time. She is the sweetest thing. I am so sorry this has happened, and I pray every day that she is found.

ADDITIONAL $10,000: Reward raised in case of missing 81-year-old
Police may have new information
Opal Parsons, 81, has been missing since Aug. 30, but police believe they may be on the verge of a break in the case and figure the effort can be helped by an announcement Wednesday that the reward for information is being increased by $10,000.
Las Vegas police Sgt. Tom Wagner said that some interesting information was brought to detectives' attention Wednesday morning and that a "person of interest" was scheduled to take a polygraph test later in the day. The results of the test should help determine whether robbery was a motive in the case, Wagner said.
