Today - From the AP
TULSA, Okla. - A suspected serial killer told authorities that he kidnapped and killed two 16-year-old Welch girls in 1999 after posing as their rescuer and dumping their bodies in a Kansas trash pit, Craig County Sheriff Jimmie Sooter said Tuesday.
Sooter said Jeremy Bryan Jones confessed to him and Alabama authorities in a January interview at the Mobile, Ala., jail. The sheriff said he waited until now to make the information public at the request of Alabama investigators.
Jones, 32, formerly of Miami, has not been charged in the Oklahoma case and even the sheriff acknowledged he has doubts about Jones' alleged confession.
But "I feel with the information and evidence we have, it's a good possibility he did do this crime," Sooter said.
A search of several pits and abandoned mine shafts near Galena, Kan., likely will take place at the end of June after months of delays caused by difficulty in coordinating resources and law enforcement agencies in Kansas and Oklahoma, the sheriff said.
Ashley Freeman and Lauria Bible went missing Dec. 30, 1999, when Freeman's parents were found murdered in the smoldering ruins of the family's mobile home. Bible had spent the night with her friend.
Sooter said Jones told him that he was high on methamphetamine when he went to the Freeman home to confront Danny Freeman about some money he allegedly owed to one of Jones' friends. Jones had only briefly met Danny Freeman before, Sooter said.
Jones went into the unlocked mobile home, where he told authorities he shot Danny and Kathy Freeman and then set a pile of old clothes on fire.
He was outside the mobile home in his pickup truck when the girls came running out and "he said, 'Come on. Let's go get help,'" Sooter said Jones told him.
Jones said "he took them to an area in Kansas and shot them both in the head," the sheriff said.
Jones was convicted in Ottawa County of sexual battery in March 1997 and left Oklahoma in 2000 facing warrants for rape and forcible sodomy. The morning the Freemans' trailer was found burning, deputies in neighboring Ottawa County put him in jail for public intoxication.
Sooter said it was still possible for Jones to have committed the crimes before being arrested.
The sheriff said Jones reported putting the girls' bodies in a hole or abandoned mine shaft filled with garbage.
"We have five years of garbage we'll have to dig through," he said.
Jones has been charged in the slaying of a Mobile County, Ala., woman and a Georgia teenager, who was his neighbor. He also is charged in the death of a New Orleans woman whose body was found in February 2004.
Jones is viewed by authorities as a suspect in other killings as well, though he has not been charged.
Sooter is wary because of his experience interviewing Tommy Lynn Sells, a Texas death row inmate who claimed to have left the girls' bodies in the east Texas woods. After a lengthy search, Sooter dismissed Sells' claims as a wild goose chase.
The sheriff said "in a sad way," he hopes Jones is telling the truth.
"I hope he's right, for all the families involved to know where their children are," he said.

Praying this guy's heart will be convicted and he will tell the truth about these beautiful little girls and any other lives he has taken. Not that he deserves it, but the truth will set him free. And if that's what it takes to bring our missing home, then I'm all for it. I just hope he's not playing games and trying to take credit for someone else's dirty deeds. If Ashley and Laura are in that pit, I just pray to God they can find them. In Christ, Jo Layne

Burch told the Mobile Register that he had talked with Sooter early Tuesday, but he declined to reveal details of the conversation.
Jones has been held in Mo bile County Metro Jail since he was arrested in September 2004 and charged with Nichols' death in Turnerville.
Authorities in Mobile have said Jones confessed to killing Nichols and setting her mobile home afire in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Law enforcement officers from other states have said he has confessed to at least four other slayings -- two more in Oklahoma, one in Louisiana and one in Georgia. He faces a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a New Orleans prostitute. He is charged with murder in the slaying of a Georgia teenager.
An Oklahoma newspaper reported in mid May that Jones confessed to two murders in Commerce, Okla., but the police chief in that town said he was skeptical of Jones' story.
Sooter expressed some skepticism about Jones' claims. "I'm not positive I can believe his confession, but he was very adamant," Sooter said.
Charging Jones in the murders was not as important to him as finding the girls' bodies, Sooter said, noting he will concentrate his efforts that.
"We are planning a search for them during the third or fourth week in June. We have not decided yet," Craig said.
He believes the bodies most likely were dumped in neighboring Cherokee County, Kan., which is pocked with old mine shafts. Craig said agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation will assist in the search which will be aided by cadaver detecting dogs and a radar device that can find buried bodies.
"We have narrowed it down to three or four locations in Kansas," Sooter said.

This is so sad. Poor kids, just having a sleepover and some a-hole druggie comes over and does this. I might have to stay off the boards for a while, I'm getting depressed lately and every one of these stories makes me feel worse.

This is one of those cases that made the hair stand up on the back of your neck to hear it on TV or read about it. When they first named Jones as a suspect in this case, it all started to make sense to me because of the drug problems he had and the fact that he was in that area where this took place.
I hope that they can find these two girls and bring them home soon. This is so brutal and so uncalled for. He is set for trial in August for the Alabama murder (Lisa Nichols). He has not been charged yet for Patrice's abduction and murder. We hear that he may never be tried for her crime and that perturbs me.

So people can just go on killing for years and years, dump one here, another there, perhaps move on if things get a little hot, wait a bit, then do it again, and over and over.
I get freaked out about our race (human). What are we?

I know this thread is about Lauria and Ashley but commenting on your post about the slip up with the police... because of that happening - Jones was let out of jail a total of 3 times in GA and he then murdered four more ladies. One of those is Patrice. We still do not have Patrice's body because she's in a river. I'm angry at the FBI didnt do any better than that.:flamemad:

Jeremy has confessed to several crimes however he has not been charged. Aside from the fact he is a psychopath, he's also a pathological liar.
The one main murder he is charged with for Lisa Nichols in Alabama - the trial will begin on August 15, 2005.
They have yet to charge him with Patrice's murder. I dont know why. She remains in that river out there and we are left to wonder what we can do in order to get her home so she can have a proper burial.
This guy is a disgusting human being.

I just pray to God if those precious girls have gone to live with Jesus, that they will soon be found in one of those pits. The thought of Jones playing games with LE just makes me sick. That poor mother needs answers, needs to know where her little girl is. I can almost feel her pain through those articles, and my heart breaks for her. All prayer warriors, we must pray without ceasing that Jones will lead them to those children and they can finally rest in blessed peace. I believe that in "due time", He will set Ms. Bible free of her burden of grief. In Christ, Jo Layne

VINITA, Okla.-- Craig County Sheriff Jimmie Sooter wants another interview with a suspected serial killer who he believes killed a Welch couple in 1999.
Sooter wants to talk with Jeremy Jones about the deaths of Danny and Kathy Freeman and the disappearance of their daughter, Ashley, and her friend Lauria (LORI) Bible.
Jones was convicted this week in Mobile, Alabama, of murder and sentenced to death. He also faces murder charges in Georgia and Louisiana.
Sooter says Jones has confessed to killing the Freemans and setting their mobile home on fire, then taking the two 16-year-old girls to Galena, Kansas, and killing them and dumping their bodies in an abandoned mine.
Searches of mines in the area have failed to turn up the girls' bodies.

I remember a case where two girls came up missing after a fire at one of their homes. They were best friends. I believe the family was murdered also. Did they find them or one of them deceased?
What was their names and what state did this happen in?
I hope someone remembers this case.
TIA

I remember, I just re-read the story, but the names are slipping my mind right now. You are talking about the one where one girl stays the night with the other girl in her family's mobile home?

This case has always bothered me. I can't understand why if someone killed the girls, they wouldn't have left their bodies there and burned them with The Freeman's bodies. The only thing I can think of, is if someone was trying to make it look like the girls themselves killed Ashley's parents and then took off.

A while back suspected serial killer Jeremy Jones was believed to have been involved with this case and gave authorities a location to search for these girls. It has since cooled off some since then. He was living in the area near where they vanished when this happened at the time of their disappearance.
This is one of those cases that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Wow, I just finished reading about about this case from the link above. I am familiar with the Serial Killer J Jones but do not recall these 2 missing girls and the murder/fire.
Seems like one or both of these girls would have been located by now. It is odd to me that no sign of the girls after this fire.
Sad, sad, case. Seems like that family had more than their share of problems. With J Jones on death row, it looks like he would figure he had nothing to gain by withholding information.
Makes me wonder if this case will ever be solved.

Have followed this case, since the begining! Always wonder if Jeremy B. Jones, was telling the truth, about Ashley & Laura! It really sad, that they two girls have never been found.
There will be releasing a new book on Sept. 1, about Jeremy B. Jones, Blood Lust ( Killing was a pleasure), by Sheila Johnson.

It's sad but these guys will confess to anything for a little special treatment or attention. It seems like in two years LE could have verified his story.
The families are still waiting for answers.

This coward isn't the first, nor will he be the last, whom has or will go to his grave without telling what has become of someone's missing loved one. These sicko's are heartless. They thouroughly enjoy knowing they've left behind grieving families who may never have answers. I've thought of these girls often, and pray to God someday they will be found. Jo Layne,TX

This guy is also the suspect in the death of Tina Mayberry, who was stabbed outside of Gibson's Bar on Halloween in 2002. My husband and her fiance' were really good friends and I was shocked when I heard she had been murdered.
Jones was known to frequent Gibson's (which scarily an old haunt for me and my friends).
He has never been charged in her death but still remains a suspect.

I just ran across this thread. I think we should never forget the missing. These girls lived not too many miles from where I do. In fact, the mine shafts they were searching is in my former home town.
Remember to never forget.
